The Mouth-Twitch of Young Women in the Late 2000s and Early 2010s

This seemed to pop up as a default mouth-thing to do around 2007:

Where did it come from?

No misogyny intended--many of my friends do this pose! I think the digital self-portrait has something to do with it.

I've wanted to bring this up for a while, but wouldn't want to post any friends' or strangers' informal photos here.

per metal injection (Eazy), Tuesday, 4 October 2011 03:21 (thirteen years ago)

maybe too obvious to mention, but could it be that people think it's "slimming" because it tends to exaggerate the cheekbones, hence making the face look bonier, more angular, more taut and thus "model-like"?

Jeff, Tuesday, 4 October 2011 03:43 (thirteen years ago)

Is it a smirk? Or a smirk variant?

Jeff, Tuesday, 4 October 2011 03:46 (thirteen years ago)

I think it's in part an alternative to either overtly smiling or not-smiling.

per metal injection (Eazy), Tuesday, 4 October 2011 03:51 (thirteen years ago)

it's not miles of smiles, and not sexyface
i think that's why it is/was popular

Art Arfons (La Lechera), Tuesday, 4 October 2011 03:56 (thirteen years ago)

While still appearing cute, it also reflects thinking and is kind of the opposite of a dead look (+ the things La 'chera said).

I GIS-ed "women deciding" to see if this is the look of a woman making a decision, and this was the first match:

this facial expression

piscesx, Tuesday, 4 October 2011 04:05 (thirteen years ago)

i don't like the title of mindy kaling's book, those "out"s are too close to one another

lite-brite phrenology (reddening), Tuesday, 4 October 2011 04:35 (thirteen years ago)

yeah I didn't mean that it is misogynist to talk about this, I just meant that the DuckFace video, while hilarious for its sheer avalanche of examples, is still really misogynist in its basic outlook re: "dumb bitches"

the tune is space, Tuesday, 4 October 2011 04:41 (thirteen years ago)

i don't see how people think it's cute or flattering. it looks like her face is swollen from surgery.

sarahel, Tuesday, 4 October 2011 04:53 (thirteen years ago)

hence making the face look bonier, more angular, more taut and thus "model-like"?

probably--though a lot of the women in these photos are already wearing bronzer applied at an angle to 'sculpt' the cheekbones. old makeup artist trick. the woman up at the top of the thread overdid it with the bronzer, looks like

geeta, Tuesday, 4 October 2011 05:02 (thirteen years ago)

the woman up at the top of the thread looks like she just had a root canal.

sarahel, Tuesday, 4 October 2011 05:03 (thirteen years ago)

you can also use bronzer to amp up your cleavage, as seen here:

geeta, Tuesday, 4 October 2011 05:03 (thirteen years ago)

Is this particular thing just an indie-cutie-pie version of duckface, really? ("I'm aware of duckface... I'm cooler than that, cmon. This is my cute FROWN")

kelpolaris, Tuesday, 4 October 2011 05:41 (thirteen years ago)

i think mindy kaling's mouth-twitch is saying "look guys, you know and i know that 'the office' has gone to shit the past couple of years, but i'm not allowed to admit it publically so you'll just have to infer it from my expression."

lite-brite phrenology (reddening), Tuesday, 4 October 2011 06:35 (thirteen years ago)

maybe too obvious to mention, but could it be that people think it's "slimming" because it tends to exaggerate the cheekbones, hence making the face look bonier, more angular, more taut and thus "model-like"?

I think this is a good explanation for duckface, but not this.

jaymc, Tuesday, 4 October 2011 13:00 (thirteen years ago)

It is perplexedness, cutely! The thinking thing was otm. I'm smart, but still cute...thinking is hard! but at the same time, you understand that I'm making fun of thinking being hard, for cute girls, like me, you see.

there is a rather amazing photo of my mother, circa 1960, age six and wearing what she refers to as a "mamie eisenhower haircut," making this face in her school portrait.

I see a lot of people, mostly women i know, make this face too and I usually notice it seems weird.
I tried but my face isn't having it.

Was gonna say, surprised McKayla Maroney never ended up on this thread, but that Obama pic is cropped from a photo where he's posing with her.
