and, uh, holy shit
unfortunately i can't really defend dropping $200 on portable speakers at the moment (#wearethe99percent and what not)
so before i go trolling tech blogs and what not, are there any recommendations for portable (non-wifi, if that matters) speakers for under $100 or so?

I really like my JBL 200iD - about USD $120 but it's been around a few years so you can find good used ones for half that. Great sound from a small, lightweight speaker that can easily be carried around (though it doesn't run on batteries). Has an iPod/iPhone dock on top and a 3.5mm input in back, plus a remote control.http://i.i.com.com/cnwk.1d/sc/32959193-2-440-OVR-1.gif

i tested the one above but i prefer the jbl OnStage, which i own and love:

it's got great sound for the price and is lightweight and small enough to carry around easily. kinda the standard issue speaker for backpacker types, mostly due to word of mouth recommendations i think. also it's well under $100
what's the one pictured at top?

what is good w/thesethe baseline, like the baseline of all things one hopes to encounter in life, is "it has to sound better than laptop speakers", & the ceiling is that it could yeah not be too crazy expensive.

Minirigs.co.uk - brilliant, the best for the price by far

I got one of these:

Happy with it. Sound is decent. Bass is just audible at close range. Good for small spaces, when you don't want to use headphones, and a full stereo would be too much.

wish these portable speakers with bluetooth had line outs so that you could plug them into your home system and play from your ipod at parties. portable speakers are nice, but the price is often high for something that is used only once in awhile.

You could run from the line out on your iPod into your home system. Is there a reason to go through a tiny speaker as an in-between point?

IDK I like to walk around with my ipod dock in hand while doing things around the house & yard like Linus w/his blanket.

You could change songs from an area far away from your soundsystem
