tax havens vs whale killers vs former fascists vs ski resort

nakhchivan, Wednesday, 12 October 2011 20:18 (fourteen years ago)

Almost went with the enigmatic San Marino but had to opt for the rugged whale-killing honesty of the Faroes instead.

Mohombi Khush Hua (ShariVari), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 20:20 (fourteen years ago)

nobody was going to vote for the vatican city right?

nakhchivan, Wednesday, 12 October 2011 20:24 (fourteen years ago)

faroe islands are too perfect, an implausible viking time warp in liminal space. otoh grand prix

ogmor, Wednesday, 12 October 2011 20:24 (fourteen years ago)

no Luxembourg?

do not wake the dragon (DJP), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 20:26 (fourteen years ago)

man, luxembourg is so much bigger than these places! i've been to luxemboug and it is tiny, too.

faroe islands feels like the leader in the clubhouse here.

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 12 October 2011 20:26 (fourteen years ago)

only one of these I've been to is Monaco (for the royal wedding this summer!) & it was fun so I'm gonna vote for it; the train station was badass, like something out of Star Trek.

town did seem kinda boring aside from the hoopla but I dunno, is Lichtenstein party central?

Euler, Wednesday, 12 October 2011 20:26 (fourteen years ago)

Faroe Islands is not a country, it's part of Denmark, right?

Tuomas, Wednesday, 12 October 2011 20:26 (fourteen years ago)

lol xp yeah dan i had to look it up--it has 500k people and all of these have like less than 50.

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 12 October 2011 20:27 (fourteen years ago)

Andorra or San Marino for me if I was on my current income. If I was rolling in it, Monaco FTW.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 12 October 2011 20:27 (fourteen years ago)

You've spelled Liechtenstein wrong. It looked really pretty during pre-match gubbins before the Scotland game last week, had never really thought about it before.

ailsa, Wednesday, 12 October 2011 20:31 (fourteen years ago)

Only been laid in Monaco amongst these

When our homeroom teacher made us memorize the capitals of the world, I always got Andorra and Lichtenstein's locations wrong.

voted san marino cause of that ny times article about their hilarious soccer team

max, Wednesday, 12 October 2011 21:35 (fourteen years ago)

the whole time i was reading the article i wanted to call my agent and option it for a heartwarming hollywood comedy

max, Wednesday, 12 October 2011 21:36 (fourteen years ago)

btw calling the faroe islands "a country" is kind of pushing it, tuomas is right its part of denmark, its self-governing but not independent in the way these others are

max, Wednesday, 12 October 2011 21:39 (fourteen years ago)

fun fact about liechtenstein: it is one of only two double-landlocked countries in the world. the other is uzbekistan

max, Wednesday, 12 October 2011 21:39 (fourteen years ago)

ALSO what about vatican city

max, Wednesday, 12 October 2011 21:40 (fourteen years ago)

not recognized by fifa

which is weird given the amount of money they could potentially throw around xp

would KILL for a soccer team made entirely of priests

max, Wednesday, 12 October 2011 21:43 (fourteen years ago)

okay so if Luxembourg is too big, what about Vatican City?

Incense in the stands, excommunications for bad calls/diving... Could they play with their stocks on?

i miss movies/tv shows with really handsome priests in them, feel like a priest sports movie could really revive that tradition

A San Marino archery team visited the LA suburb of San Marino many years ago, and I saw one of them do a "Robin Hood" - shoot an arrow into the bullseye of a target, then shoot another that split the shaft of the first. So, San Marino.

nickn, Wednesday, 12 October 2011 22:52 (fourteen years ago)

Central Park, NYC is more than 7 times as large as Vatican City fwiw. Not for nothing, I bet a Central Park football team would demolish a team of Vatican City priests.

Q: "Is there much crime?"

A: Compared with the larger countries the answer is no and serious crime is rare. There is some petty law breaking though some of which is the result of alcohol misuse.

Q: "Do they have a drugs problem?"

A: In recent years some drugs have reached the islands - mostly cannabis - and these days the customs officers use dogs. Thankfully, the use of drugs is still small. Everything is relative though and for most of us any use of illegal drugs is considered a problem.

Indeed. If you wanted to poll autonomous parts of other countries, you should have also included Gibraltar, Åland, Isle of Man, etc.

Tuomas, Thursday, 13 October 2011 06:58 (thirteen years ago)

how can a place not be its own country?
