whoa this is going to be hard

Threat Level: Panda (jjjusten), Thursday, 20 October 2011 15:46 (thirteen years ago)

Too many great choices. I'm going with Kill Baby Kill.

michael assbender (Eric H.), Thursday, 20 October 2011 15:46 (thirteen years ago)

oh dammit

I voted "The Birds" before I scrolled down and saw "Manos: The Hands of Fate"

do not wake the dragon (DJP), Thursday, 20 October 2011 15:47 (thirteen years ago)

this really is the golden era of horror movie titles

Threat Level: Panda (jjjusten), Thursday, 20 October 2011 15:49 (thirteen years ago)

i keep thinking a vote for the haunting is the boring obvious choice, but it also might be the right one

Threat Level: Panda (jjjusten), Thursday, 20 October 2011 15:50 (thirteen years ago)

embarrassment of riches

Brad C., Thursday, 20 October 2011 15:50 (thirteen years ago)

I Eat Your Skin

this is an amazing title, I hope the movie delivers

lol hueg sorry

Think I may vote 'Carry on Screaming' purely for Fennela Fielding's lascivious take on Morticia Addams.

yeah this is tough, especially since I have to go on memories of childhood viewings for a lot of these titles (why do I have fond recollections of the gorgon?). repulsion would rank high for me except it's more a psychological thriller and not so much horror. still haven't seen the sadist, which is supposed to be great.

initial reaction is masque of the red death vs onibaba. but then what do I do with transcendent b-movie x: the man with the x-ray eyes? maybe I'd pull the handle for it if they kept in ray milland's rumored final line - "I can still see!"

I was watching onibaba once and near the conclusion my wife walked in. she looked at the screen, looked at me, said "you watch some really weird shit, man" and left (the room, not me).

the boy with the gorn at his side (Edward III), Thursday, 20 October 2011 16:10 (thirteen years ago)

Jeez, I've only seen three of these. And one of them is Manos.

(though, in some fairness to myself, Blood and Black Lace, Kwaidan and Onibaba are somewhere in my rental queue)

jer.fairall, Thursday, 20 October 2011 16:12 (thirteen years ago)

Narrowed it down to The Birds, The Haunting and Repulsion, but it's very tough to choose between those three.

Y Kant Lou Reed (Le Bateau Ivre), Thursday, 20 October 2011 16:16 (thirteen years ago)

oh, right, Repulsion is in the queue as well. Easily the one I'm most embarrassed to admit not having seen yet.

jer.fairall, Thursday, 20 October 2011 16:19 (thirteen years ago)

The third segment of Black Sabbath, "A Drop Of Water," has haunted me since I was a kid (which was sooooo long ago that I originally saw it on late night TV in black and white. Didn't realize it was in glorious color until years later.) I don't really care for the Wurdelak segment, though, so I don't think Black Sabbath will be my choice.
Still...

Repulsion is right up there, though not *exactly* a horror movie imo.

Blue Doggie Sweater (Dan Peterson), Thursday, 20 October 2011 16:28 (thirteen years ago)

also embarrassed as to not having seen repulsion, but i'm not too cheesed as i am more than happy to throw a vote in the direction of masque of the red death, my favorite corman flick.

D'Brickasquad (fennel cartwright), Thursday, 20 October 2011 16:31 (thirteen years ago)

Obvious, but Repulsion. First time I saw it was 3:00 in the morning on TV. Completely creeped me out, especially the hands coming through the walls.

clemenza, Thursday, 20 October 2011 18:51 (thirteen years ago)

There are so many great picks here. But for me it is clearly Repulsion. I do think it's on the borderline, but would class it as psychological horror, and it's an amazing portrait of a breakdown.

The third segment of Black Sabbath, "A Drop Of Water," has haunted me since I was a kid (which was sooooo long ago that I originally saw it on late night TV in black and white.

That creaking rocking chair kept me awake for a long time when I was eight or nine. I think the movie was scarier in black and white than in Bavacolor. The other segments are good too.

Between Black Sabbath, The Birds, Dementia 13, The Haunting, Kwaidan, The Last Man on Earth, The Masque of the Red Death, and Repulsion, this is a tough poll ... there are also a bunch here I've never seen and would love to.

Masque of the Red Death or Kwaidan over The Birds and Repulsion

incredibly middlebrow (Dr Morbius), Friday, 21 October 2011 03:03 (thirteen years ago)

I assumed Repulsion would win this so I voted for Blood and Black Lace, which truly shocked me on first viewing. Like Psycho (or Repulsion for that matter) it seems liked a new kind of movie. Too bad we have to combine years here - based on what I've seen and comments on the other threads in this series, either '63 or '64 on its own may be better than any year of the '90s.

Josefa, Friday, 21 October 2011 23:36 (thirteen years ago)

This really is peak Bava isn't it? Went with Black Sabbath because I'm boring.

Jedmond, Saturday, 22 October 2011 09:38 (thirteen years ago)

I've been watching, off and on, "Die, Monster, Die," which I don't recall fondly from my creature double feature childhood, I simply ... recall it. And it's hilarious in its utterly dull, purple, repetitive portent. It starts off with a sequence with the protagonist asking for a way to the ol' Winchester place or whatever, and every single person he asks, from the local townies drinking to the guy renting bicycles, gives him this snarl, followed by some variant of "What business have ye at the old WInchester place?!? No one goes there! No one!!!!!' And then he asks someone else and gets the same response. And then he walks there, anyway, and everyone at the ol' Winchester place has a bee up their butt, too. Except for the pretty daughter. "Take her away from this horrid, cursed place!" goes the inevitable request of some unseen crone. But the dude just doesn't get the message. Too subtle, I suppose.

Is Black Sabbath the one with the lady in the iron maiden?

The Haunting for me. Still incredibly effective

Is Black Sabbath the one with the lady in the iron maiden?

That's Black Sunday (Mask Of The Demon), iirc.

Voted Blood & Black Lace, if i'm honest because i didn't notice Repulsion the first time i looked at the list. It's probably my favourite Bava film and one of the most luminously beautiful horror movies ever made. The colours are glorious.

Mohombi Khush Hua (ShariVari), Saturday, 29 October 2011 23:09 (thirteen years ago)

I do wish these had been split into single years. Much as I love Repulsion it makes me sad not to vote for some of the others.

emil.y, Sunday, 30 October 2011 17:13 (thirteen years ago)

saw the first two options and briefly confused this for a music poll

Neanderthal, Sunday, 30 October 2011 17:25 (thirteen years ago)

watched masque of the red death last night, has to be the most twisted thing to ever get shown on the 4:30 movie
