The New New Server

Today I'm going to go into the place where this server is hosted and swap the old server for a new one. I estimate we'll only be out of action for an hour at most, so never fear. The consequences of this will be that we won't have to have any delays or outages anymore, which is a good thing.

Just for your own interest (if indeed you are interested), here is a photo of the new machine I will be installing today:

Spiffy! (or not)

New "oooh, aaah" and "fuck off you nerd" answers.

Andrew (enneff), Sunday, 1 September 2002 23:31 (twenty-two years ago)

it's a reassuring shade of beige

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Sunday, 1 September 2002 23:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Thankyou.

I've been meaning to send you an email about this, but would it be possible to take up another ~150M of disk space for a fulltext index? I was thinking it might take a while, so it might be best to add the index before the new server goes online, but I don't know how you're doing the transition so this might not be any advantage. Anyway "alter table messages add fulltext (body, name, email); alter table threads add fulltext (subject);", if you get the urge.

Graham (graham), Sunday, 1 September 2002 23:37 (twenty-two years ago)

well, the casing is identical to mine.

I don't know much about computers.

RJG (RJG), Sunday, 1 September 2002 23:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Can we have some timing on when this outage will occur, it'd probably be good to give some kind of advance warning.

Graham (graham), Sunday, 1 September 2002 23:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Okay, it'll probably be unavailable between 1230 and 1400 EST, which is 0230 and 0400 GMT.

And we should add the index after the upgrade, simply because it'll be much faster to do so.

Andrew (enneff), Sunday, 1 September 2002 23:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, OK. One thing though: adding a fulltext index on my copy of the database took 8 hours then I gave up, deleted the database and reimported (with indexing updating constantly) and that only took 4 hours to complete, which goes totally against what it says in the manual. But I don't think my install is setup properly so this might not mean anything.

EST=Australian EST not US EST for those off the ball.

Graham (graham), Monday, 2 September 2002 00:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Woohoo! The upgrade worked.

Andrew (enneff), Monday, 2 September 2002 02:21 (twenty-two years ago)

(When you remembered to turn Register Globals on. Yes, some of use stayed up until 5am to notice that)

Thankyou. I will have to find new and innovative ways to ruin this one.

Graham (graham), Monday, 2 September 2002 02:24 (twenty-two years ago)

does the server have a name ?

anthony easton (anthony), Monday, 2 September 2002 03:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh..its so, erotic. I want to kiss it in its terabytes. I want to sing to its spark plaugs and hide it in my treefort . I want to introduce it to the one eyed bat -jackal that swings from my giant garden phallus and blow its brains out in India with a saber toother vending prancer boot!

Mike Hanle y (mike), Monday, 2 September 2002 06:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow, got the exact same case right here under the desk.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 2 September 2002 19:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh no! Whitish! Oh no! We have been getting new dead fast computers at work, andthey are black. All of the black computers are faster than all of the white ones. Therefore black computers are faster than white ones. Therefore if you paint your new server black it will work more quickly.

This is astronomers' logic, in a story I like: an astronomer, a physicist and a mathematician drive into Scotland. They see a black sheep in a field. The astronomer says "Oh, Scottish sheep are black." "No," says the physicist, "some Scottish sheep are black." "No, no," says the mathematician. "All that we know is that in Scotland there exists at least one sheep, at least one side of which is black."

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 2 September 2002 19:46 (twenty-two years ago)
