so, while on my evening constitutional, I was waiting at a stoplight with three teenage girls, maybe 16-18. “normal” girls, no visible scars or tribal markings. I had my headphones on, as is my want.
one of them yelled, “HEY WHATCHA LISTENING TO?”
the music was low, so I could hear them talking anyway. I took off my headphones.
“uh, AMM. they’re, uh” I fumbled for a quick and dirty description, “uh, a jazz group.”
“oh yeah,” the same one kinda spat the words. “I know them.”
the light changed and they took off ahead of me. I just sorta stood there momentarily dumbfounded.

now, I don’t know what’s scarier: that this girl was trying to possibly impress me by lying about knowing an obscure british electro-acoustic improv troupe (spot the redundancy in that phrase) or a future wherein scowling teenagers will blast the damped roar of shortwave radio and prepared piano out of their jalopies.

More life sucks in WA state: the empty apartment next door that I share a bit of a deck with has sadly been rented, to some girl who has just spent 2 hours talking on her cellphone out on the deck. Which might be bearable except for (a) she has a horrible giggle and (b) dear god what a loud & inane conversation. Geesh, and I sound like a fucking curmudgeon.
