How many slaves do you 'employ'? Or: what's your Slavery Footprint?

I apparently have 26 slaves working for me, according to Slavery Footprint. How many slaves are working for you?

Y Kant Lou Reed (Le Bateau Ivre), Sunday, 30 October 2011 19:34 (thirteen years ago)

Certain definitions of 'slave' include just about everyone who has a job.

22 slaves woohoo

iatee, Sunday, 30 October 2011 19:44 (thirteen years ago)

I wonder what their names are

iatee, Sunday, 30 October 2011 19:44 (thirteen years ago)

I got 20, I'm more virtuous than you

dayo, Sunday, 30 October 2011 19:49 (thirteen years ago)

33, even though my car and most of my clothes aren't made where they seem to assume they are.

StanM, Sunday, 30 October 2011 19:50 (thirteen years ago)

ya I only buy clothes from american apparel and I'm waiting until they get into the auto industry so I can finally buy a car

iatee, Sunday, 30 October 2011 19:51 (thirteen years ago)

actually own four slaves, dunno bout any other notional ones tbh

interim dn (darraghmac), Sunday, 30 October 2011 19:53 (thirteen years ago)

the food part was confusing.

one dis leads to another (ian), Sunday, 30 October 2011 19:55 (thirteen years ago)

but i think i have 33 slaves working for me.

Their website is slow, clearly they don't have enough slaves employed to shovel coal into the boilers.

asked Dermot O'Leary, but he couldn't help me either. They call me the (snoball), Sunday, 30 October 2011 19:56 (thirteen years ago)

29, and I assume most of them are related to my technology products (iMac, iPad, 2 x digital cameras, iPod, TV, etc.)

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Sunday, 30 October 2011 19:56 (thirteen years ago)

I only employ one...

43 slaves? Is it because I drink so much gin and coffee? I feel like I live a pretty minimal life.

despite all my rage I am still just a Latter Day Saint (Abbbottt), Sunday, 30 October 2011 19:57 (thirteen years ago)

@Ian, the food part is confusing indeed. Asking me how many nuts... are they nuts?

iatee, Sunday, 30 October 2011 20:00 (thirteen years ago)

thought assuming 50 pair of pants/denim was odd

haha yeah and leather shoes

iatee, Sunday, 30 October 2011 20:02 (thirteen years ago)

were there guy specific questions? i imagine if you answered "male" they didn't give you options for mascara, perfume, and various other cosmetic items i couldn't identify, so i just assumed i did not own them.

sarahel, Sunday, 30 October 2011 20:03 (thirteen years ago)

No, in the make up section you could still add mascara or perfume etc

Y Kant Lou Reed (Le Bateau Ivre), Sunday, 30 October 2011 20:03 (thirteen years ago)

as a male

Y Kant Lou Reed (Le Bateau Ivre), Sunday, 30 October 2011 20:04 (thirteen years ago)

well the last question was 'have you paid for sex' - did girls not get that?

iatee, Sunday, 30 October 2011 20:04 (thirteen years ago)

that's very enlightened! it made me realize that i am pretty spartan when it comes to cosmetics.

sarahel, Sunday, 30 October 2011 20:04 (thirteen years ago)

xp - yes, we got the "have you paid for sex" question too

sarahel, Sunday, 30 October 2011 20:05 (thirteen years ago)

then presumably it was the same throughout

dayo, Sunday, 30 October 2011 20:06 (thirteen years ago)

for shame, max :(

iatee, Sunday, 30 October 2011 20:07 (thirteen years ago)

There should have been a running total so you could see what influence every choice had. (*pulls slider from 1 to 2 pistachios* : WHAT! FOUR extra slaves???)

StanM, Sunday, 30 October 2011 20:11 (thirteen years ago)

this is really annoying to take

also i question its methodologies

also i think this is a generally unhelpful way to conceptualize slavery/labor/'globalization' cf that other thread

max, Sunday, 30 October 2011 20:12 (thirteen years ago)

37 - kinda doubt they're getting steady work though, a lot of my large quantities of items are a result of being a pack rat. yes, i have 4 camcorders. all but one is over 10 years old.

sarahel, Sunday, 30 October 2011 20:12 (thirteen years ago)

also apparently "cardigans" are really influencing my score??

max, Sunday, 30 October 2011 20:12 (thirteen years ago)

Hey if you call on the warranty they're there, Sarahel

xp

Y Kant Lou Reed (Le Bateau Ivre), Sunday, 30 October 2011 20:13 (thirteen years ago)

Y Kant Lou Reed (Le Bateau Ivre), Sunday, 30 October 2011 20:13 (thirteen years ago)

focus should be on how much you buy/consume, not how much you own right now

otm

iatee, Sunday, 30 October 2011 20:14 (thirteen years ago)

StanM, Sunday, 30 October 2011 20:17 (thirteen years ago)

76 for my 4 person household, but I may have gone overboard on how much jewelry my wife has (she has a lot of stuff she never pulls out) and I really didn't understand how the food section worked.

Ouch, I turned all the clothing sliders down from their default and still clothing is my biggest contributing factor (though I think I drastically underestimated on the food screen because it was boring clicking on everything, and on the gadget screen because I only counted stuff I use regularly, which now I think about it is I guess the opposite of the point)

wtf was that?? the proportions all auto-adjusted so that they fucked up proportions you had previously set where you wanted them.

apparently they think i need a slave to make sure things add to 100

it would be nice if on the last page they at least had some cursory explanation as to how various things we own relate to slavery instead of just trying to make people feel bad in a very abstract way

iatee, Monday, 31 October 2011 03:09 (thirteen years ago)

this thing would be (and I'm sure has been) done decently w/ carbon emissions

I couldn't adjust the wardrobe portion for some strange reason so ending up with 56 slaves. I don't know what number I would have had if I hadn't been assigned 50 pairs of jeans or whatever ridiculous number it was.

bouquet beatdown (Nicole), Monday, 31 October 2011 03:30 (thirteen years ago)

i couldn't adjust the food knobs. also there was no "i eat mostly slim jims and saltines" option.

strongo hulkington's ghost dad, Monday, 31 October 2011 03:31 (thirteen years ago)

38 slaves

this feels deeply ironic somehow

he carried yellow flowers (DJP), Monday, 31 October 2011 15:09 (thirteen years ago)

interim dn (darraghmac), Monday, 31 October 2011 15:28 (thirteen years ago)

This seems deeply flawed, even if all of the adjustments were in working order for everyone. Like the food section assuming you aren't growing any of your own food, for example.
