simon trife (simon_tr), Monday, 2 September 2002 12:05 (twenty-two years ago)

two point eight earths.

but it didn't factor in how much electrical power I use which, probably=YOTTAWATTS more than I should.

realistically, I'd estimate fifteen earths for-to-if everyone lived like me.

RJG (RJG), Monday, 2 September 2002 12:07 (twenty-two years ago)

simon trife (simon_tr), Monday, 2 September 2002 12:09 (twenty-two years ago)

haha,

I just plugged in some CRAZY values, like. vegan, mostly not packaged/processed foods, live with seven people, in less than thirty square metres, green design and crap, never go in ANY fossil fueled vehicle etc. etc. result=one planet. time for a lifestyle change...

RJG (RJG), Monday, 2 September 2002 12:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Zac, The Black Power Ranger (vicc13), Monday, 2 September 2002 14:41 (twenty-two years ago)

1.8 planets. Maybe its because I can stand up straight and turn around a full 360 degrees in my living quarters.

mark s (mark s), Monday, 2 September 2002 17:23 (twenty-two years ago)

3 planets=5.4 global hectares. It says the UK average is 5.3, so it's kind of surprising how low most of us are. Perhaps the shortage (I'm guessing) of heavy industry moguls who drive Rolls Royces on ILX accounts for this.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 2 September 2002 19:37 (twenty-two years ago)

3.6. But it's less than the average for the Australia.. I say thangyew to my car with buggerall fuel efficiency..

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 2 September 2002 21:09 (twenty-two years ago)

1.0 planet. Although i think this test is fairly dubious for various reasons; according to the test i am using 0.6 of a hectare of dry land by occasionally eating fish, despite the fact that the fish i eat is relatively unprocessed, locally sourced, and that I live in a country with a massive coastline and very strict rules to ensure sustainable fishing. Looks likes this test was corrupted with dodgy vegan politics. I'm also using up extra resources by not living in an eco-house, but think how much resources we would be using if we pulled down all the old houses to build eco-houses. Bizarrely i am not using any more resouces by living somewhere with a cold climate.

hamish, Monday, 2 September 2002 21:40 (twenty-two years ago)

of course, what this site fails to mention is that if it were possible for every human on earth to live like the average american the planet as a whole would be around 5-6 times richer and could afford just about anything.

the ridiculous impossibility of my above statement is probably equivalent to the idea that everyone could possibly live like any of us any time soon. 70% of Africans have never seen a telephone.

Stuart, Monday, 2 September 2002 21:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Uh... that's 70% of rural Africans... which is still probably most Africans...

Stuart, Monday, 2 September 2002 21:58 (twenty-two years ago)

i think the test is better as a general thought experiment than as a guide to helping you live sustainably (eg i cd cut my planetude-as-per-test down considerably by nailing up the door to my sitting room and my work room, and just living in my kitchen and bedroom, tho i think this wd have little genuine world impact) (i guess it wd reduce the amount of work i do)
