moo-town slackers (Pillbox), Monday, 7 November 2011 03:47 (twelve years ago) link

hippies are too old to have kids

buzza, Monday, 7 November 2011 03:50 (twelve years ago) link

America can absorb any amount of child-naming strangeness; it sops it up like cat litter.

Aimless, Monday, 7 November 2011 05:45 (twelve years ago) link

I can't bag on this anymore because one of my oldest friends named her daughter Marley (Mom is not a hippie, just left the USAF) and the little girl is fucking adorable.

what about people that name both their dog and their kids 'Marley' ?

sarahel, Monday, 7 November 2011 06:12 (twelve years ago) link

once it became acceptable for dogs, we should have known the kids would be next.

moo-town slackers (Pillbox), Monday, 7 November 2011 06:15 (twelve years ago) link

i'd like to think they're naming 'em after governor elaine marley from monkey island

One of our cats is called Marley. His name was picked by the first song heard on the car radio driving back from the cat shelter.

Just want to jump in here - and sorry for being a pedant - but I don't think that Bob Marley is "classic rock" as much as "reggae".

rustic italian flatbread, Monday, 7 November 2011 11:46 (twelve years ago) link

he gets played on classic rock stations!

fill up ass of emoticon fart (crüt), Monday, 7 November 2011 11:47 (twelve years ago) link

I imagine there are few if any reggae stations.

rustic italian flatbread, Monday, 7 November 2011 11:56 (twelve years ago) link

lol i know one of these

I also know someone that named their kid Hendrix which somehow seems a lot worse.

Juggy Brottleteen (ENBB), Monday, 7 November 2011 11:56 (twelve years ago) link

Hendrix is a pretty awkward first name.

fill up ass of emoticon fart (crüt), Monday, 7 November 2011 12:05 (twelve years ago) link

a kid called hendrix or marley is more likely to be mocked by his teacher (/parents' friends) than other kids tbf.

Upt0eleven, Monday, 7 November 2011 12:18 (twelve years ago) link

or a kid named Van Der Graf

Neanderthal, Monday, 7 November 2011 12:38 (twelve years ago) link

or Genesis... oh, I think that's been done

R. Stornoway (Tom D.), Monday, 7 November 2011 12:58 (twelve years ago) link

Twice as many girls named Marley last year than boys named Marley or Marlon combined.

rustic italian flatbread, Monday, 7 November 2011 12:59 (twelve years ago) link

Weird that parents are calling kids Marley and yet I don't know a single child named Bob.

idk it's got to be better than my sister's in-law who is naming all her kids after conservative presidents, eg she has a daughter named Reagan (I had wondered aloud if The Exorcist was the origin of that name, which really insulted her -_-)

Wondering if people are starting to think that maybe Marley isn't alternative enough so they're going for U-Roy or Tubby or Scratch instead.

I once met a Welsh girl at a pretty fucked up party who told me her name was "Belle-Marie" which soon turned to "Bill Murray" and eventually "Bob Marley".

Glo-Vember (dog latin), Monday, 7 November 2011 14:55 (twelve years ago) link

Murray > Marley

I know of a girl from my town named Metallica, and I sorta know a guy who named his baby Primus.

I have a friend who is a big Stones fan so he named his kids Marlon and Jade

my parents' across-the-street neighbor named his kid Journey.

p sure Ras-Trent would name his first kid Marley to compensate for having had to cut off his dreads when he needed that office job.

moo-town slackers (Pillbox), Monday, 7 November 2011 18:12 (twelve years ago) link

Gonna name my kid The Who. I can't see that resulting in any confusion.

Tarfumes The Escape Goat, Monday, 7 November 2011 18:13 (twelve years ago) link

I can't believe there's a kid out there named Primus.

This is blowing my mind.

What's you name? Oh hey, I'm Primus.

._.

Juggy Brottleteen (ENBB), Monday, 7 November 2011 18:13 (twelve years ago) link

My sister works at a veterinary clinic, and she often has to take care of two dogs that get boarded there a lot named Winger and Dio. Even for dog names I thought that was kind of questionable, but that seems like nothing compared to babies named Metallica and Primus.

bouquet beatdown (Nicole), Monday, 7 November 2011 18:14 (twelve years ago) link

some folks i know named their kid carter cash.

omar little, Monday, 7 November 2011 18:15 (twelve years ago) link

Oh hey, I'm Primus.

Presumably that was his firstborn. Maybe this was a common name back in Roman times.

Miss Piggy and Frodo in Hull (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 7 November 2011 18:15 (twelve years ago) link

carter cash

At least those are names independent of the rock connections. It's still pretty bad though.

Juggy Brottleteen (ENBB), Monday, 7 November 2011 18:17 (twelve years ago) link

OK I kind of love Winger and Dio the dogs. lol.

Juggy Brottleteen (ENBB), Monday, 7 November 2011 18:18 (twelve years ago) link

Dio clearly the alpha-male, always beating up on poor old Winger

moo-town slackers (Pillbox), Monday, 7 November 2011 18:19 (twelve years ago) link

I had no idea this was a Bob Marley tribute! A girl who lived down the street when I was a kid is named Marley.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Monday, 7 November 2011 18:53 (twelve years ago) link

Didn't a Swedish court actually prevent parents from naming their kid "Metallica" once?

EveningStar (Sund4r), Monday, 7 November 2011 18:54 (twelve years ago) link

No, they ruled it was OK!: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naming_law_in_Sweden#Metallica

EveningStar (Sund4r), Monday, 7 November 2011 18:54 (twelve years ago) link

I never met Metallica, but people told me she was nice and mostly into hip hop. I think ILX's rabies might've met her. Primus's dad is a deadbeat who split for Portland or Eugene soon after the birth so he could find himself, I think.
