I just heard yesterday he was in a hospice. I remember an Ali quote from Sports Illustrated after their third fight, I think, the decision that Ali won in 15; it was something like, "Lord, he's a great fighter."

I well recall when Ali was mowing down the heavyweight division - just plain humiliating the other fighters in the ring. Liston, Patterson, Terrell. Then he was unfairly and unjustly stripped of the title.
When Ali finally came back and found he'd met his match in Frazier it was a true shock and amazement. I didn't think that anyone could stay in with him, let alone take the title from him fair and square. Frazier shrugged off punishment. He just kept coming in and coming in like no other fighter I've ever seen. A worthy champ. RIP, Joe. You were smokin'!

this was actually a quote from Frazier about Ali, which he would later deny.
― Matt Armstrong, Tuesday, 8 November 2011 05:16 (thirteen years ago)
There was bad blood between them, but Ali was to blame for that.
― Aimless, Tuesday, 8 November 2011 05:21 (thirteen years ago)
The vagaries of memory..."Down goes Frazier" one of the most thrilling calls ever--was that against Ali or Foreman?

^ a buddy of mine worked on that. I'm sure he's p down right now. I had tix to the NY premier back in the spring and I had to bail. Talk about a huge mistake. Joe was apparently gracious and stayed until the very end of each screening.

Sad reminder that the Heavyweight division used to mean something, to fans all around the world, because of greats like Joe. The grin he used to give opponents as he soaked up punches and still came forward still makes me smile. RIP Joe.

^ Heavyweight champion of the world was the King of Sport in those days, more famous and looked up to than any footballer or whatever. RIP Smokin' Joe.
Unfortunately Joe gets beat up in this track, but it is awesome nonetheless:

― Janet Snakehole (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 8 November 2011 15:05 (thirteen years ago)
well the ironic thing about Ali baiting JF by calling him "gorilla" etc (was that before the first fight?) is that he was the Silent Majority's favorite boxer in '71, as they wanted him to beat that treasonous Muslim. (my X grade teacher, a bitter old harpy, said as much in class)
― Dr Morbois de Bologne (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 8 November 2011 15:09 (thirteen years ago)
For some reason, 67 seems way too young. Then again, the world of heavyweight boxing as national pastime seems like a lifetime ago.
― Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 8 November 2011 18:28 (thirteen years ago)
watched all of ali-frazier I after learning this last night (it's on youtube)
― MODS DID 10/11 (k3vin k.), Tuesday, 8 November 2011 18:32 (thirteen years ago)
The real (and sad, and fucked up) irony is that Frazier petitioned for Ali's license to box to be reinstated. Frazier went to the wall for Ali, and Ali called him an Uncle Tom.
― Tarfumes The Escape Goat, Tuesday, 8 November 2011 18:35 (thirteen years ago)
I imagine there are many people like me who really paid attention to boxing in the late '60s and early '70s, and then (with the exception of maybe Tyson) never paid attention again after Ali retired. Frazier's passing is very much tied into the passing of a moment, a point some of you have already more or less made.

^greatest thing ever is Frazier breaking Ali's fucking jaw in AF I. Serious payback. And AF III didnt go quite the distance, Joe didnt answer the bell in the last round.

RIP Joe.
Watching Frazier vs Bonavena from '66 on ESPN Classic just now - excellent fight, Frazier floored inthe second and from then on just keeps coming and coming. Such relentless punishment.
― a guy called Gerard (onimo), Tuesday, 8 November 2011 20:40 (thirteen years ago)
Just got to the end. Not wanting to piss all over Joe's legacy here but Bonavena was robbed.

Frazier vs Ali #1 coming up next on ESPN Classic (UK). That's my evening sorted.
― a guy called Gerard (onimo), Tuesday, 8 November 2011 20:56 (thirteen years ago)
Just watched it, proper tribute to the man. He's so beat up by the 15th and he does not stop.
Only caught the last couple of rounds of the Bonavena so I cdn't score it.
― Bond 23: Skyrim (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 8 November 2011 21:58 (thirteen years ago)
Yeah, Bovena was the winner I think.
Ali Foreman fights amongst the greatest ever though.

Agreed. Must have been an amazing era to be around - with those three & Norton all around peak fitness & ability. By the time I was old enough to pay attention to boxing Larry Holmes was the champ and most of those guys were past their best. I read that Holmes vs Norton was a classic (all three judges had it even after 14 rounds!) but I've never seen it - must take a look on youtube if I remember when I get home.
