Let's talk about this. I need to decide whether or not I'm going to go.

Good times? Bad times? Help.

i think i have to go.

surm, Tuesday, 8 November 2011 22:36 (twelve years ago) link

A friend of mine did this recently and found it jarring when some people had no memory of him.

10-year was last year.
Went to the party the night before because a friend made me, wound up finding out a lot of the people I actually liked in school showed up, drank a lot (slept through booty call at 4am), got talked into going to the actual reunion the next night - wound up shitfaced sleeping next to an infinity pool on the roof of a douchey hotel.
Ended up reconnecting with a few people who are among my closest friends now, including my roommate.

Wanted to go to my 20th but I dont think anyone organised one. Or if they did, they werent able to get in touch with me (I live in a diff state now). Oh well, only wanted to show everyone up anyway, provincial gits.

Cgaf. 'oh hey x got really fat. Oh y died' that's about as interesting as I see it being.

reunion committee gave out door prizes for bullshit like having the most kids or most time at one job - my friends and I wanted awards for making it ten years without settling down or popping out babies

I've only made it to one high school and one college reunion, but both were a ton of fun. jjj was livetexting me from our last reunion and sending me straight up hilarious pics; I know we all are lol old now but MAN some ppl in my class GALLOPED into middle age

dense macabre (DJP), Tuesday, 8 November 2011 22:54 (twelve years ago) link

it's weird to see facebook pics from dudes i knew from class and they look like decrepit retirees and they're like 35 yrs old.

Yeah, my class has a website and facebook page, and that's about as much as I need to interract with them with to feel caught up. I did look at some pictures from the 30th one a few years ago, and thought "damn those people are old," but then I catch a reflection of myself now and then and do a little inner wince.

I feel like all the people I would actually want to see again are the kind of people who don't go to reunions and/or are dead.

Plus a lot of my hs friends were in a year above or below me, only three or four in my actual graduating year.

never been remotely tempted by a high school reunion but this past september i attended a reunion of my AAU swimming team and it was a BLAST. i swam ages 12-17, spent so much time with team mates between 2x daily practices, meets, taking trips etc. we were even closer than class mates in many respects. reunion turnout was good, everybody there seem well-preserved, especially the women, so at least there was some long-term benefit to being a jock. enough time has passed that everybody has made peace w/whatever happened or didn't in their athletic career, so we spent equal time reminiscing and catching up on what we've done since. i talked so much i lost my voice the next day! the only catch here is that i'm older than most ilxors, what made this swim reunion so great was the timing, we're all in our fifties or late forties now and able to look back with some perspective. twenty or even ten years ago i wouldn't have even considered attending.

so i would say go if you're at all inclined and know some friends are going to be there.

my 10 year just reminded me that all my friends either went to the other two high schools in town, or were a year older/ younger. i saw like 3 people i was excited to see.

I went to my 20 year in 2007 and it was pretty meh overall. Nice to see a few people, otherwise I needn't have bothered. My 25 year will be next year, and most of my former friends are either dead or turned into right wing fucktards, so I doubt I'll bother.

i couldn't adjust the food knobs (Phil D.), Wednesday, 9 November 2011 00:06 (twelve years ago) link

I guess the one bummer about the three reunions I've attended (one high school and two college) is that most of my close friends haven't shown up, and the attendees have generally skewed toward the slightly bland people who still live in the area. But that doesn't mean they're not perfectly decent folks to get drunk with, or to reminisce with in a general way. And it's nice to get out of your old cliques, anyway.

got a bland "hi" & blank expression from one woman like she didn't remember me and i thought "but we made out once in 1974!"

I cant at all fathom the idea of finding a joy in school reunions. I guess people who do must have had loads of friends in HS who they all miss/would love to catch up with.

I had 3 friends, 2 of which I had a massive falling out with, and everyone else hated me (or I hated/did not get on with them). Many would likely not even remember who i was, much less care. They were boring, horrible people.

Trayce, Wednesday, 9 November 2011 00:53 (twelve years ago) link

there are going to be a lot of girls at my reunion i think

surm, Wednesday, 9 November 2011 01:27 (twelve years ago) link

going to a high school reunion seems sort of redundant to me since i'm still relatively close with all of my high school friends. it also seems doubtful that the school i graduated from would even have a reunion—it was a drop-out recovery school with only about 200 students, we never had a yearbook, and everyone voted to have a barbecue instead of a prom.

1staethyr, Wednesday, 9 November 2011 01:32 (twelve years ago) link

plus high school wasn't particularly traumatic for me, so i don't really need some kind of romy and michelle-style catharsis

1staethyr, Wednesday, 9 November 2011 01:34 (twelve years ago) link

The school reunion people seem to have given up on me--I haven't gotten a mailing from them in ten years.

High school was particularly traumatic for me but I got the romy and michelle-style catharsis when ppl started friending me up on myspace/facebook which is probably a good thing since I went to an all-girls private school and didn't really have a typical reunion that I know of.

think it is sensible to not go to these so that people assume you have something better going on, cultivate both mystique & create an impression of having ascended somehow, like an aloof fuck you, then also you can just read about it on facebook in your basement apartment at three am afterwards

not even! the fun of going to reunions is running into all the ppl who you dont miss/havent thought about/never were friends with and seeing how theyve changed. a lot of people that were awful in high school grow up a lot afterward and turn out to be pretty cool

i didnt exactly have many hs girlfriends. i did run into a girl who was a year ahead of me and whom i had a crush on at the time, though, and was kind of surprised to discover how much she looks like my gf

This, also some people who actively bullied me were thrilled to see me and engaged in normal conversation. The only really unlikeable people were the Toorak fops who got law/medical degrees and formed their own exclusive old-money club in the corner.

Autumn Almanac (Schlafsack), Wednesday, 9 November 2011 03:35 (twelve years ago) link

Oh, there was one guy who in hs was just awful and apparently kept a collection of his own snot on the back of his bedroom door. At age 33 he was literally no different, going so far as to dickhead up the post-reunion drinks with smarmy comments and a creepy lack of personal space.

Other "cons":
– High school/hometown over 1,200 miles away (really the main reason I haven't gone)
– I went to 4 dift high schools (one only for a week so that barely counts), obv I would go to reunion of one I graduated from but I would like to see a few people from each, it's weird how fragmented my life was back then when I think about it

Other "pros":
– Would be nice to apologize to some people
– Would be cool to see who else quit being Mormon

I would defs go to a reunion of my grad program in 5-10 years if/when one happens though, no matter the travel expense, they are all The Best and it's small enough I know everyone.

here's the thing. i am doing thanksgiving at my boyfriend's which is roughly 3 hours away from the reunion (like 3 trains). and the reunion is the day after thanksgiving.

so it's like do i make all the effort to get there? it's one thing when you're going WITH people.

i feel like i will soooo not want to move the morning after thanksgiving, let alone take 3 trains.

solve my life, please. thanks!

seven months pass...

My 20th is set for September. I just looked at the facebook page for it and found out they don't even have my correct name on the student list, so wtf. I'm still in touch with most of the people from high school I want to be in touch with anyway, so I don't have a burning desire to go back and socialize with people I've forgotten. (Was sad to find out that at least three people had died—one of whom was murdered.)

god help me ive been thinking about my 10th hs reunion coming this year A LOT more than i thought i would. i think it would be a genuine surprise for me since ive been off facebook for a few years and legit lost touch with nearly everyone i went to hs with (graduating class of~700).

or maybe i am a glutton for punishment.
