in my household, we are arguing about how many times is "a lot" of times to have seen this movie.

Dunno that I could count. Had these recorded on tape off TV when I was a kid and I seem to remember watching them every day or two. That can't be right though, right?

wmlynch, Thursday, 10 November 2011 03:13 (thirteen years ago)

i've probably seen every scene of this movie at least a dozen times each but i don't think i've sat down and watched the whole thing front to back more than twice, if that. so no idea how to vote, really.

some dude, Thursday, 10 November 2011 03:24 (thirteen years ago)

that is an aesthetically pleasing arrangement of poll options

sarahel, Thursday, 10 November 2011 03:25 (thirteen years ago)

more than 25 times, easily. but not straight through in probably a decade or more.

what would be the 'single most seen movie' among americans? this would surely be up there, maybe even #1? beyond that jaws, titanic, spielberg stuff?

iatee, Thursday, 10 November 2011 06:32 (thirteen years ago)

and I don't mean quantity of times I mean % of americans who have seen the movie

iatee, Thursday, 10 November 2011 06:32 (thirteen years ago)

caligula

am0n, Thursday, 10 November 2011 06:33 (thirteen years ago)

@iatee i think historically its got to be an older movie, even really big hits now are seen by a lot fewer ppl than pre-tv films although if were talking right this moment its probably still s.thing like 'wizard of oz'

and a butt (Lamp), Thursday, 10 November 2011 06:41 (thirteen years ago)

oh yeah wizard of oz has to be up there

also seasonal stuff like "grinch"

MODS DID 10/11 (k3vin k.), Thursday, 10 November 2011 06:41 (thirteen years ago)

that's a good point

yeah wizard of oz is prob a good pick. I wonder what the % for something like that would be, I could believe anywhere from like, 30% to 90%.

casablanca maybe

iatee, Thursday, 10 November 2011 06:54 (thirteen years ago)

yeah this is a good bet - something like 'it's a wonderful life'. but i think kids movies are probably p widely seen. really 'star wars' is obv p popular but its disproportionately popular w/ the sort of ppl that help shape culture/opinion, which makes it seem like a more widely seen movie than it really is. id be willing to bet like $5 that more ppl have seen the 'lion king' than 'star wars'

and a butt (Lamp), Thursday, 10 November 2011 06:56 (thirteen years ago)

nah old movies like that that aren't widely (esp seasonally) syndicated on basic cable aren't in the discussion

― and a butt (Lamp), Thursday, November 10, 2011 1:56 AM (4 minutes ago)

hm i dunno, first of all $5 is a lot of money, also feel like a good percentage of the people in the star wars demo when it was released are still alive now, kind of a prevalence vs incidence thing.

MODS DID 10/11 (k3vin k.), Thursday, 10 November 2011 07:04 (thirteen years ago)

ooh

MODS DID 10/11 (k3vin k.), Thursday, 10 November 2011 07:06 (thirteen years ago)

old disney movies are a good one cause kids still watch them and old people watched them when they were kids. snow white, pinocchio would join that.

iatee, Thursday, 10 November 2011 07:08 (thirteen years ago)

also feel like a good percentage of the people in the star wars demo when it was released are still alive now, kind of a prevalence vs incidence thing

i think i follow you although to extend the metaphor i think more ppl are exposed to 'the lion king' than 'star wars' so the duration factor is overwhelmed. but its sorta a stupid argument when a movie like 'snow white' has both factors going for it

and a butt (Lamp), Thursday, 10 November 2011 07:17 (thirteen years ago)

it's an interesting idea I think, that our children's culture is also our most universal/shared culture. I think there are prob some children's books that that's true for too.

iatee, Thursday, 10 November 2011 07:20 (thirteen years ago)

We taped "Return of the Jedi", "Superman II" and "Time Bandits" off the TV broadcast and I watched them each about 25 times between ages 5 and 10. I've seen "Star Wars" + "Empire" six times, so I averaged it to 10.

...options. (Ówen P.), Thursday, 10 November 2011 08:32 (thirteen years ago)

I reckon about 12 times. Since Lucas started dicking around with it, I'm glad to say, zero times.

yeah, this. it permeates the culture i live in, i can't really be arsed to watch it. same with pretty much every disney movie after the little mermaid.

i think my brother even had the films on video! i just didn't like films as a child, and got very good at faking cultural knowledge based on what was commonly known, and then it was embarrassing not to have seen it, and then it was kind of fun to be a person who'd never seen the cultural totem that is star wars, and now i don't really care. it's just some film.

I like to think of myself as a Young Money-ologist so (c sharp major), Thursday, 10 November 2011 10:05 (thirteen years ago)

I probably have seen it, and probably more than once, but I can't remember actually sitting down and watching it all the way through

R. Stornoway (Tom D.), Thursday, 10 November 2011 10:07 (thirteen years ago)

Honestly no idea how many times I've sat down and seen it start to end, it might not even be that many, but it has suffused to the very core of my being.

Didn't see Empire till the mid 90s though.

I saw this three times at the cinema when I was about 4 or 5 years old (when it came out). I don't think I've ever seen any other film more than once at the cinema.

Nasty, British & Short (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Friday, 11 November 2011 00:07 (thirteen years ago)

I saw this 25+ times before age 10 due to having a pirate copy on VHS/BETA. I have not watched it again since aged 16, if I were to wager... probably earlier?

citation needed (Steve Shasta), Friday, 11 November 2011 00:59 (thirteen years ago)

I was practically raised on the original trilogy. As an army brat living off-post in rural West Germany, there wasn't much in the way of American kid-friendly stuff to watch on tv, so my parents would put on the Star Wars movies for us.

latebloomer, Friday, 11 November 2011 01:21 (thirteen years ago)

I mean that wasn't the ONLY thing we watched of course

latebloomer, Friday, 11 November 2011 01:23 (thirteen years ago)

I'd bet the results have a lot of correlation ilx's age demographics

I think most people my age have seen it but I can't imagine any of my friends having seen it 25+ times, even the geeky ones

I didn't vote but prob around 5?

strongo hulkington's ghost dad, Friday, 11 November 2011 02:13 (thirteen years ago)

I've seen each of the original trilogy more than ten times, in various forms (only once in the original theatrical cuts).

prequel trilogy, I have seen the first two once, and ep 3 I saw twice (once in theatre, once on DVD).

thing is, while I consider myself a fan of Star Wars and love the flicks, I see the behavior of fanboys and it makes me want to turn and run. I remember once leaving the upstairs common room of my dorm because two groups of roughly 6-7 people each started getting in a heated (and I mean words were had) debate about the Clone Wars, and I was afraid an actual *fight* was going to break out over it.

no jesus, no piece (Neanderthal), Friday, 11 November 2011 03:40 (thirteen years ago)

Honest to goodness, my earliest memory. Saw it in LA in probably 78 when I was 3 or so, cried when Darth Vader made his first appearance, made my dad take me out. He took me to the next showing and it was cool. Probably seen it a billion times since then, but when I saw the reissues or whatever 15 years ago or whenever I thought you know what? This sucks and I never want to see any of these but "Empire" ever again, and I haven't. Maybe some day. I've got two girls, though, so who knows?

My wife, on the other hand, has seen none of them. She doesn't even know the characters or what a wookie is or whatever. That takes some doing.

My dad was stationed at Peden Barracks near Wertheim from 1985-88, during which I was 3-5 years old. We lived in a very tiny town nearby called Houndheim (I think that's what it was called).

Let A Man Come In And Do The Cop Porn (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Friday, 11 November 2011 14:41 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah, see, for us old(er) folks, keep in mind we first saw it in the '70s. And every time a new one came out, I want to say they released the old ones again. They don't re-release films anymore, but they sure used to. I mean, I saw Raiders several times in the theatre, and I know ET was in and out of theatres a few times. So by the time Star Wars was on home video I'd seen it several times already.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 11 November 2011 14:58 (thirteen years ago)

I saw it once, when I was a kid. I think the only one of the original trilogy that I ever saw again was Empire Strikes Back, because someone wanted to watch it in college, and there was beer.
