Well then.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 14 November 2011 19:49 (thirteen years ago)

As As Ewing said:

Apparently Dr Who needs a 'radical transformation to take it into the bigger arena' of movie films. I hear the bark of Poochie.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 14 November 2011 19:50 (thirteen years ago)

I hate how David Yates directed the Harry Potter films, and he should be put in stocks for his comments about Doctor Who.

I wish there was an Inspector Spacetime movie instead.

bouquet beatdown (Nicole), Monday, 14 November 2011 20:32 (thirteen years ago)

Btw I am not at all joking about the stocks comment.

My hate for David Yates was totally justified.

bouquet beatdown (Nicole), Monday, 14 November 2011 21:13 (thirteen years ago)

luckily this will never happen. hollywood will never finance a Doctor Who movie imo and the british don't really make movies anymore, so we're probably safe.

the wheelie king (wk), Monday, 14 November 2011 21:24 (thirteen years ago)

Hollywood made an Incredible Hulk movie TWICE. Don't put anything past them.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 14 November 2011 21:25 (thirteen years ago)

Hulk has brand name recognition in the US though while Doctor Who doesn't really. Does Yates have enough pull to get a pet project like that greenlit? I don't really know but I kind of doubt it. His only successes are the Potter movies and I'm sure hollywood doesn't give him any credit for that.

the wheelie king (wk), Monday, 14 November 2011 21:28 (thirteen years ago)

And they shouldn't.

bouquet beatdown (Nicole), Monday, 14 November 2011 21:29 (thirteen years ago)

I'm not really opposed to a reboot though because I'd like to see all of that stupid last timelord bullshit done away with. Doctor Who really needs to be a tv show though. I can't see it working as a movie.

the wheelie king (wk), Monday, 14 November 2011 21:31 (thirteen years ago)

Lots and lots of rumours last year (or might have been the year before) from an ILX0R who may be involved with an agency suggesting Rusty had definitely sold a film. I might also have read things to this end.

I fucking hate everything at this point.

50,000 raspberries with the face of Peter Ndlovu (aldo), Monday, 14 November 2011 21:38 (thirteen years ago)

but if that's true then this new story can't be true, right?

the wheelie king (wk), Monday, 14 November 2011 21:57 (thirteen years ago)

Jane Tranter is just a beard, I presume. She does share a house with Rusty in LA. Allegedly.

50,000 raspberries with the face of Peter Ndlovu (aldo), Monday, 14 November 2011 22:14 (thirteen years ago)

Anyway, this is now being reported as fact by none other than the BBC so I would guess this happening without any doubt.

http://www.avclub.com/articles/harry-potter-director-developing-allnew-doctor-who,65124/

Yates says he’s looking at new writers who can draw familiar elements from the long-running series but create their own reimagining, not unlike Bryan Singer’s recently stated goal to start all over again on Battlestar Galactica, despite there being a perfectly fine reinvention from just a few years ago. Fortunately, just as with Battlestar Galactica, fans of Doctor Who aren’t really known for being obsessive, so they’ll probably be cool with just whatever he wants to do, just as long as there's some scarves and robots in there.

this is amazingly straight-faced

"this is happening" = yates is going to start developing a doctor who movie. that doesn't mean it will necessarily ever start shooting.

the wheelie king (wk), Monday, 14 November 2011 22:38 (thirteen years ago)

it all kind of hinges on what actors he can get involved, doesn't it? the bbc certainly isn't going to sell a doctor who movie to hollywood just on the strength of "it's doctor who!", let alone "david yates is attached to direct".

the wheelie king (wk), Monday, 14 November 2011 22:40 (thirteen years ago)

You might be missing Jane Tranter's connections.

doctor whos rubbish

conrad, Monday, 14 November 2011 22:44 (thirteen years ago)

lolll @ the straight-facedness

doctor who is such a perfect story for the medium of tv, i'm annoyed enough by the $arrogance$ of feature film alone right now

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Monday, 14 November 2011 22:44 (thirteen years ago)

come to think of it I would welcome a big hollywood Doctor Who franchise if it means that I someday get to play a Lego Doctor Who video game.

You might be missing Jane Tranter's connections.

yeah I am. what are they?

the wheelie king (wk), Monday, 14 November 2011 22:45 (thirteen years ago)

Jane Tranter was BBC Head of Commissioning when Rusty got hired and is current Executive VP of BBC Worldwide. If she says she's sold it on, which she seems to have, and the BBC confirm it, then it's been sold on.

Plus next year is wound down on output because (allegedly) of drop in BBC profits on NuWho so if we then went 2013 and 2014 broadcasting with 2014 off for the film it wouldn't seem so odd.

50,000 raspberries with the face of Peter Ndlovu (aldo), Monday, 14 November 2011 22:49 (thirteen years ago)

I think we're operating on two different sets of assumptions here. I interpreted the article as meaning that they actually want to develop Who into a feature film to be released theatrically, and I'm assuming that in order to do so the BBC would have to seek outside funding. In which case all they have going for them is a TV producer, a TV director who lucked into a Harry Potter job but doesn't have any real box office track record, and a property that's only a household name in the UK.

But if the BBC is actually financing this thing entirely themselves then you might be right and Tranter saying she's doing it is as good as it being done. Or I may have entirely misunderstood and they're just talking about a TV movie?

the wheelie king (wk), Monday, 14 November 2011 22:59 (thirteen years ago)

A BBC spokesman said: "A Doctor Who feature film remains in development with BBC Worldwide Productions in Los Angeles.

So that sounds like the BBC are financing it and will just look for a distributor.

50,000 raspberries with the face of Peter Ndlovu (aldo), Monday, 14 November 2011 23:12 (thirteen years ago)

There are still so many unanswered questions though. Do they mean a feature film to be broadcast on television? Or for theatrical release? Can BBC actually afford to finance a feature film suitable for theatrical release? The closest comparison might be something like Hitchhiker's Guide which cost $50 million six years ago (and incidentally flopped despite being a much bigger property than Doctor Who).

Maybe they can actually afford that kind of budget, I honestly have no idea. But at this point all that "in development" means is that they're going to hire somebody to write a script.

the wheelie king (wk), Monday, 14 November 2011 23:20 (thirteen years ago)

wait, is Hitchhiker's Guide actually a bigger property than Doctor Who?

sex-poodle Al Gore (DJP), Monday, 14 November 2011 23:21 (thirteen years ago)

Maybe not. It feels like the books were a much bigger deal in the US than Doctor Who ever was, but Who is probably bigger in the UK, right?

the wheelie king (wk), Monday, 14 November 2011 23:26 (thirteen years ago)

May this never happen

Hate the assumption that movies are somehow BETTER than any other form of something, especially given the ample evidence that this is so much shit

Fizzles the Chimp (GamalielRatsey), Tuesday, 15 November 2011 14:07 (thirteen years ago)

i know people don't want an origin story but whatever happened to the doctor prior to an unearthly child, where his granddaughter came from, etc, is still an interesting mystery (note: I'm still only in season 3 of the new series so maybe some of this has been cleared up since I dunno)

akm, Tuesday, 15 November 2011 14:56 (thirteen years ago)

by and large the new series goes nowhere near this; they explore some of it in the Virgin and BBC books (particularly Lungbarrow)

sex-poodle Al Gore (DJP), Tuesday, 15 November 2011 14:59 (thirteen years ago)

I still want to kick David Yates in the shins -- thought I would be less annoyed over this by today, but nope.

bouquet beatdown (Nicole), Tuesday, 15 November 2011 15:03 (thirteen years ago)

oh also the TV movie claimed that the Doctor's mother was human but a lot of people like to ignore that because it was stupid

sex-poodle Al Gore (DJP), Tuesday, 15 November 2011 15:05 (thirteen years ago)

that's incredibly stupid. I think I blocked out that bit of trauma.

the wheelie king (wk), Tuesday, 15 November 2011 18:39 (thirteen years ago)

yeah they should ignore that. but, presumably the doctor had a pretty lengthy and rich life prior to the unearthly child. it's certainly the oldest he ever was in a regeneration. so there are years and years of things they could explore in that, also, it keeps you from ever having to deal with daleks or cybermen or anything. on the other hand, it just might seem really generic and detached from the history.

akm, Tuesday, 15 November 2011 19:27 (thirteen years ago)

there's a segment of fandom that argues the the Doctor was born looking like an old man, just fyi

btw I fully endorse Idris Elba or Johnny Depp

sex-poodle Al Gore (DJP), Tuesday, 15 November 2011 20:41 (thirteen years ago)

(did you see this year's South Park Thanksgiving episode? that made the punchline even better IMO due to said punchline's prominent part in the episode)

sex-poodle Al Gore (DJP), Tuesday, 15 November 2011 20:42 (thirteen years ago)

Wait you forgot a third candidate.

"DJP

You Might Know Him From: ILX, WoW, Boston Pops cameos

If we're thinking out of the box, someone who can comfortably reference every last bit of Who-related continuity issues, sing a vocal version of the theme song for maximum marketing (especially given the already confirmed Skrillex remix) and otherwise actually seem like he's controlling the TARDIS every step of the way is a lock. Also, he's rumored to have been lobbying for Rosario Dawson as his companion."

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 15 November 2011 20:42 (thirteen years ago)

no one is going to watch a Doctor Who movie where the Doctor spends the whole time chasing his companion through TARDIS corridors shouting "GIMME KISSES"

sex-poodle Al Gore (DJP), Tuesday, 15 November 2011 20:46 (thirteen years ago)

idris elba would be great if they wanted a black doctor, he has a gravity and seriousness that has been unseen in the doctor since hartnell, frankly.

eccelstone would be great if they could backfill that doctor's story, I assume he would never do it and they wouldn't want to do this either.
