Doctor Who: best BOOK companion

Message Bookmarked

Let's get REAL nerdy here. I'm including everyone who traveled with the Doctor in a Virgin or BBC novel in a companion capacity. This includes three characters that were introduced in other media. Characters considered to be canonical TV companions are not included. Apologies to the two other people who will actually care if I've missed someone.

sex-poodle Al Gore (DJP), Tuesday, 15 November 2011 15:41 (thirteen years ago)

I still have never read the books, but it is entertaining any time you write about them.

fyi here is a quick rundown:

Lady Serena - I have no idea who this is. According to Wikipedia, things don't go well for her.
Jeremy - This dude out-Adrics Adric. Fucking hate him.
Grant - This dude is basically Adric Done Right. Kind of weedy but entertaining.
Frobisher - He is a shapeshifting penguin. That's pretty much all you need to know.
Evelyn - She acts a little like the Doctor's mom, which can get annoying.
nu-Ace - She starts out a little ridiculous and eye-rolly, then quickly becomes awesome. Ace taken to her logical "blow it up first, ask questions much much later" conclusion mixed in with a healthy amount of disdain for the Doctor.
Benny - Simply put, one of the best characters ever created.
Wolsey - Better than Benny.
Kadiatu - Not really a companion, not really a descendant of the Brigadier, but since she's a walking death machine she's pretty awesome.
Jason - Sometimes his cowardice is annoying, oftentimes it's hilarious.
Roz - The series really needed her, IMO. A sweary aristocrat cop of African descent with extremely dodgy prejudices subsumed by a pathological sense of justice, she's probably the most complicated character created during the Virgin run.
Chris - Mostly great, though most of the writers didn't know what to do with him.
Sam - She was incredibly annoying until Lawrence Miles got his hands on her, at which point she became awesome not so much in who she was, but in who she would have been had the Doctor not decided he needed a "perfect" companion.
Fitz - Again, one of the best characters ever created in these books. Basically an amalgamation of everything that worked about Benny with everything that worked about Jason combined with some of the most horrific, traumatic events to ever happen to a companion (again, thanks Lawrence Miles).
Compassion - Sour, mean, sentient time machine. What's not to love!
Miranda - They might as well have called her "Marissa" after the infamous Star Trek fan-fic character. Even hints that she ended up an evil megalomaniac don't ease the annoyance.
Anji - A lot of people complained that Anji was too normal/conservative but I appreciated that, as that made her stand out quite a bit from most of her predecessors.
Trix - I only ever read one book with her in it and she annoyed the snot out of me. I didn't understand why the rest of the TARDIS crew trusted her and I didn't find her rogueishness charming.

Frobisher - He is a shapeshifting penguin. That's pretty much all you need to know.

Based on this description alone, he is my favorite.

Frobisher was the companion during "my" era of DWM, and is in a dope Rob Shearman Big Finish, voting for him all day every day

Wilco Pump Pant (Schlafsack), Tuesday, 15 November 2011 23:10 (thirteen years ago)

I don't know where to start with this list, mainly because every book companion that I can remember (except maybe Sam (but maybe not even her) and Bernice) grated with me to some extent

Wilco Pump Pant (Schlafsack), Tuesday, 15 November 2011 23:11 (thirteen years ago)

kind of like how I am the board's #1 Tegan apologist, I am the board's #1 Roz apologist

sex-poodle Al Gore (DJP), Tuesday, 15 November 2011 23:12 (thirteen years ago)

basically, I really like Benny, Roz, Fitz, Kadiatu and Compassion and see the good in Sam, nu-Ace, Chris, Anji, Grant and Evelyn

all of them are pwned by Wolsey

sex-poodle Al Gore (DJP), Tuesday, 15 November 2011 23:17 (thirteen years ago)

I never read most of the Virgins so there are a few gaps in my knowledge, but what I saw of the rejigged Ace didn't please me, mainly because I quite liked the old Ace.
