Big, HUGE popstar crushes

When was the last time you had one? When you look at the picture and go *hurrrr sigh* and think you wouldn't be a groupie, you'd be different and then you realise that it's three in the afternoon and you have a lot of work to do because you have been staring into space like a lovestruck Westlife fan in double history.

Tell me all about them please.

Anna, Tuesday, 3 September 2002 12:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Are you implying no one around here is a lovestruck Westlife fan?

Graham (graham), Tuesday, 3 September 2002 12:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I am not though.
But this morning I woke up and found for no explicable reason I was madly in love with one of Black Rebel Motorcycle club. Now he can do no wrong. I haven't had a pop star crush in ages, it's quite fun actually.

Anna, Tuesday, 3 September 2002 12:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha I have a VAMPIRE CRUSH on thee Vampire Lestat (rowr rowr rowr)!

Sarah (starry), Tuesday, 3 September 2002 12:17 (twenty-two years ago)

well, rachel goswell set my teen heart racing back then, (talk about predictable indie boy!) but i cant say i have any at the moment...

gareth (gareth), Tuesday, 3 September 2002 12:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't even remember, most of the music I lurve is made by mugly people. I remember thinking when I was watching the MTV awards that one of the bands -- either the Hives or the Vines -- were much cuter than the Strokes or the current boy bands but it doesn't exactly count as a crush if I can't even remember which band it was.

Nicole (Nicole), Tuesday, 3 September 2002 12:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Is it too predictable to mention the bass player from JJ72? She lovely.

Not that she would inspire me to ever listen to one of their records or even see them live, though.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 3 September 2002 12:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Lately Tara Reid has been diverting my attention from Rachel Leigh Cook on my Josie and the Pussycats poster, if that counts.

Have you met this guy Anna?

Graham (graham), Tuesday, 3 September 2002 12:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Phwoar. Hillary Woods (the bass player for JJ72) for sure! I don't want to wither, october swimmer.

Marco Mattiuzzo (Psycho Ant), Tuesday, 3 September 2002 12:29 (twenty-two years ago)

No, never.

If I had it wouldn't be a proper pop star crush, you can't meet them, well not unless you are hanging to the side of a stage and they chuck a sweaty t-shirt at you which means you will definatley be getting married, because HE LOOKED AT ME, AT ME, DIDN'T YOU SEE?

hem

Anna, Tuesday, 3 September 2002 12:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Hahahaa!!!

http://www.geocities.com/mardraven/LestatKick.jpg

If that doesn't work:

http://www.geocities.com/mardraven/LestatKick.jpg

The other vamps expression!

I HAVE to see this film again!!

Sarah (starry), Tuesday, 3 September 2002 12:31 (twenty-two years ago)

i had a crush on Farmer Dave for approx 3 seconds, then realised it was silly. and it was only cos everyone else was having a crush on him.

ooh sarah queen of thee damned is out on DVD oct 28th...

katie (katie), Tuesday, 3 September 2002 12:32 (twenty-two years ago)

God that was an AWFUL, AWFUL film. God knows why it didn't go straight to video.

Marco Mattiuzzo (Psycho Ant), Tuesday, 3 September 2002 12:33 (twenty-two years ago)

You're new around here, aren't you?

Graham (graham), Tuesday, 3 September 2002 12:40 (twenty-two years ago)

First popstar crush in ages, Miss Kittin.

stevo (stevo), Tuesday, 3 September 2002 12:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Graham's comment sounds a bit narky but it's not supposed to, I don't suppose.
Queen of the Dammed

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 3 September 2002 12:46 (twenty-two years ago)

not a pop star (yet), but i am developing a gleeful obsession with paris hilton. she's such a BITCH!

bob zemko (bob), Tuesday, 3 September 2002 12:47 (twenty-two years ago)

btw I don't think I've ever had a crush on a pop star, and certainly not an indie band member.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 3 September 2002 12:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, I kind of tell a lie. Not a Big, HUGE one, but Kim Deal was cool with me. And Juliana Hatfield, when she said she was a virgin.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 3 September 2002 12:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Gareth, at the next FAP remind me to tell you my Rachel Goswell story.

chris (chris), Tuesday, 3 September 2002 12:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Lauren Laverne. Lauren Laverne. Lauren Laverne. Lauren Laverne. Lauren Laverne. Lauren Laverne. Lauren Laverne. Lauren Laverne. Lauren Laverne. Lauren Laverne. Lauren Laverne. Lauren Laverne.

How could I forget her.

Graham (graham), Tuesday, 3 September 2002 12:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I have redeveloped a massive crush on Janet Jackson. I want that new Beanie Man video on permanent loop.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 3 September 2002 13:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Lauren Laverne. Lauren Laverne. Lauren Laverne. Lauren Laverne. Lauren Laverne. Lauren Laverne. Lauren Laverne. Lauren Laverne. Lauren Laverne. Lauren Laverne. Lauren Laverne. Lauren Laverne.

Oh yeah - her too.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 3 September 2002 13:04 (twenty-two years ago)

*drools* I am going to print off a HUGE picture of the vampire lestat (if I can find one) offa the interweb and put it on my wall and then paint all the walls BLACK and then dye all my clothes black and and and and... !!!!!!

Sarah (starry), Tuesday, 3 September 2002 13:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Surely a crush on Janet Jackson kind of implies that you also fancy Michael circa 1988, them looking pretty much identical and all...

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 3 September 2002 13:06 (twenty-two years ago)

PIKA!!!!

i'm sorry i have been on the COFFEE! (starry), Tuesday, 3 September 2002 13:06 (twenty-two years ago)

she's looking horribly thin lately, I hope she's alright.

Ms Laverne I mean of course

chris (chris), Tuesday, 3 September 2002 13:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Can't think of any big huge popstar crushes. Am I missing out? Perhaps I should go home and gaze soppily at the kind of cute picture of Ovuca (presumably) on the King Stacey EP and daydream about going to marry him and live in Finland and spend all day mangling breakbeats in oldschool trackers together.

Or maybe that would just be weird. Err, errrr, ahem.

Rebecca, Tuesday, 3 September 2002 13:08 (twenty-two years ago)

_Bad_-era Michael Jackson looks NOTHING like Janet! He's always been a dead-ringer for LaToya, anyway.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 3 September 2002 13:09 (twenty-two years ago)

He looks more like Elizabeth Taylor these days.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 3 September 2002 13:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Queen ov the Dammed!! I shall motor it into Sight and Sound's top ten by the year 2012 YOU WILL SEE!!

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 3 September 2002 13:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I just wanted to go to the pub with Lauren Laverne and be mates with all of Kenickie. Sigh. And I wanted her voice/accent for its knack of making absolutely everything sound hilarious (this might be a disadvantage sometimes but if you ever need to sound serious you probably just sound really cute and forlorn and aural-equivalent-of-big-sad-puppy-eyes-but-in-less-nauseatingly-obvious-way instead).

I am not so sure after seeing that horrible Iain Lee C4 prog laughing at 70s and 80s dance crazes, but that was enough to make me lose my faith in most things, really. I also wanted to smack Adam Buxton for most of it. GRR. Rage. Etc.

Rebecca (reb), Tuesday, 3 September 2002 13:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I used to have a thing about Adam Buxton too. God, I have dire taste in celebrity men. Except for Robert from Black Rebel Motorcycle Club obviously.

Anna, Tuesday, 3 September 2002 13:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I used to have a huge thing for Iain Lee.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 3 September 2002 13:26 (twenty-two years ago)

NB. This is not true.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 3 September 2002 13:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Now you see Adam was the humour-man and Joe was his comedy foil - Joe was the one with the lookZoR, whilst Adam had too much of a tendency for baggy shorts.

Actually seeing as I remember he wuvs Gorkys and thee Pixies, perhaps he should go on VER HUSBAND LIST (although that is occupied for a couple of weeks whilst the atommick brane features HUSBAND GUEST LISTS haha).

Oh no the next thing you know I shall have a thing for ridiculous leather trousis (ha ha although the vampire lestats are not lace up)! Oh sod it, I'm a pervey goff and it is ALL queen of the dammeds fault.

Sarah (starry), Tuesday, 3 September 2002 13:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Liar, you have big Iain Lee posters and an interactive Iain Lee game.

Anna, Tuesday, 3 September 2002 13:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I always found Richard D James to be quite hot...and you know what they say about him being a bedroom genius.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 3 September 2002 13:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I always thought AB was cute too, Anna, and wanted to like even his most embarrassing jokes because of it. This is part of why it was strangely liberating to be so damn annoyed by him.

In theory I am in favour of sarcastic skinny gangly Cardiacs-loving nerds but they should not ever ever laugh at professional dance troupes for not being coordinated enough. I mean, I rely solely on cliched stereotype and knowledge of my own failures here, but pot, kettle? In fact they should just not be that annoying. Argh.

*foams at mouth, considers expensive run of therapy to erase said programme from her memory*

Rebecca (reb), Tuesday, 3 September 2002 13:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Surely Joe is cuter and also doesn't like Travis (he is a soul boy)?

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 3 September 2002 13:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Did anyone say they thought this thread would be about Rik Waller yet?

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 3 September 2002 13:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Joe is cuter, but I thought Adam was twinkly. It wasn't the most rational of decisions.

Anna, Tuesday, 3 September 2002 13:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Travis? TRAVIS??? Right! Immediate removal from husband list.

Rebecca (reb), Tuesday, 3 September 2002 13:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Joe = cuter but Adam = funnier (and I am sure you know, that I wouldn't kick either of them out of bed for eating biscuits unless they did not share GIMME HOBNOBS NOW!!)

Sarah (starry), Tuesday, 3 September 2002 13:43 (twenty-two years ago)

He is mates with Fran Healey and ver band. On some Play TV equivalent of 'All Back To Mine' he was interviewed making a CDR for Louis Theroux and was v.amusing and enthusiastic but along with early Gorky's and late Fall he did indeed choose 'All I Wanna Do Is Rock'. And some Radiohead I think. He was going on about how Joe thinks he has rotten taste.
(Neil Hannon, in the next episode, was a boring prick as ever)

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 3 September 2002 13:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Mates != necessarily LOVING the band *tries to justify desperately*

Sarah (starry), Tuesday, 3 September 2002 13:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Joe = cuter and funnier

Graham (graham), Tuesday, 3 September 2002 13:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Sarah, I think he became mates BECAUSE he loved their music so much, like Tim H and the Clientele.

(this might not be true)

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 3 September 2002 13:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh no this way leads to mentalism! Oh dear just because I have a crush on "the vampire" Lestat I do hope I do not need to listen to his bands nu-metal rubfest eh.

Sarah (starry), Tuesday, 3 September 2002 13:57 (twenty-two years ago)

For a little while I had a weird girly crush on Rufus Wainwright -- so, being a heterosexual male and all, I tried to convince girls to have crushes on him so I could extend my crush vicariously.

At the New York ILX meet-up back in February we were walking between bars and Rufus walked right past us: I got all stammery and said "did you see Rufus Wainwright go past just now?" and Ned threatened to go back and beat him up. Ned sucks like that.

nabisco (nabisco), Tuesday, 3 September 2002 14:28 (twenty-two years ago)

rachel goswell yeah, but also was once dreamily in love with harriet wheeler. had the chance to shove david gavurin in front of a bus once but i chickened out.

keith, Wednesday, 4 September 2002 01:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I always found Richard D James to be quite hot...and you know what they say about him being a bedroom genius.

Heheh a friend of mine made this: http://takos.wh3rd.net/photos/index.php?album=funny (the bottom link of course)

As for the real world, Sophie Ellis-Bextor's songs have actually suddenly started to appeal to me since I saw what she looked like.

Keith McD (Keith McD), Wednesday, 4 September 2002 01:23 (twenty-two years ago)

wow, its the first time JJ72 actually are mentioned in a thread, and now it's already three or four posts.

erik, Wednesday, 4 September 2002 04:18 (twenty-two years ago)

They got a few mentions in old Greenspun threads but I think they're yet to see a thread of their own.

bnw (bnw), Wednesday, 4 September 2002 04:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Nabisco: And Anna, I'm sorry to say that last year, when BRMC played in my neighborhood, your beau drifted around from store to store all afternoon annoying everyone by telling them how great the band was and how they should really come out to the show. I guess struggling-band self-promotion habits die hard, but geez.

See - humble and sweet and not acting like an idoit because of record deal.

Tom: Black Rebel Motorcycle Club HAR HAR HAR HAR HAR HAR HAR

Don't be mean.

Anna, Wednesday, 4 September 2002 09:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Not just a popstar crush, though she DOES make songs...

Lek Dukagjin, Wednesday, 4 September 2002 09:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Shit - can I edit that? I didn't realise that 2nd pic's size until I posted it.

Lek Dukagjin, Wednesday, 4 September 2002 09:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I got confused and thought this was the so what do you look like thread and was like "Who is this chick?"

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 4 September 2002 09:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Madonna for me when I was a teenager and Wendy James.

More recently Gwen Stefani.

toraneko (toraneko), Wednesday, 4 September 2002 09:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Kelly Osborne!

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 4 September 2002 09:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I had a huge crush on Corin Tucker when I was 16, but looking back on it I think I might've just wanted to be her. But she is oh so cute and flirty in the you're no rock n roll fun video. le sigh.

Elisabeth, Wednesday, 4 September 2002 10:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Jel, you are one sick puppy

chris (chris), Wednesday, 4 September 2002 10:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I often get them on groups (haha that tells you more about my sex life than you wanted to know). TLC are probably my all-time favourites there.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 4 September 2002 16:47 (twenty-two years ago)

So I went looking for Ovuca pics and I couldn't find any particularly crushworthy ones online but I ended up squinting at a postage-stamp-sized thing and going, "Hm, those 27 Ovuca-pixels look a bit like Euros Childs there," and then I remembered. Mmmmmmm Euros Childs. How could I forget? Sigh...

Rebecca (reb), Wednesday, 4 September 2002 18:11 (twenty-two years ago)

jel you are one smart cookie.

di smith (lucylurex), Wednesday, 4 September 2002 20:27 (twenty-two years ago)

eh Bjork. ten years ago.

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Wednesday, 4 September 2002 20:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Mmmm Kelly O

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 4 September 2002 21:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Electric S.O. Jim sez:
lordy lordy. this is almost as distressing as when Calum was banging on about that Sleeper bird being attractive

Haha, yes undoubtedly, but unlike Calum, I am not trying to claim that the band was any good!

N0RM4N PH4Y, Wednesday, 4 September 2002 22:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Wotsisname the singer from the Hives. Dammit. I was in complete denial until earlier today, while I was waiting for my father and reading a Hives article in Q mag (i.e., staring at the pix). When I was finally told to HURRY UP! I was horrified to find myself quickly flipping the page to perpetuate the nonexistent reading illusion.

Poppy (poppy), Thursday, 5 September 2002 01:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Richard Lloyd would be the latest one I guess. From when he was younger, not now. (The age thing only applies to his attractiveness obviously, not his musical talents) And Tom Verlaine and Thurston Moore as always.
Which BRMC member is that? I like the drummer but not the other two. I am not really a fan of them though. Same goes for the Vines, although the lead singer is gorgeous. And I really hate Phantom Planet, but the lead singer of that is HOTT.

Livvie, Thursday, 5 September 2002 07:24 (twenty-two years ago)

He's the one with the marginally less stupid hair.

Anna, Thursday, 5 September 2002 07:31 (twenty-two years ago)

EUROS!! Yes haha Rebecca I may need to fiteZoR you (although I wd haf preferred him in the earlier Gorkys days hemhem).

Sarah (starry), Thursday, 5 September 2002 07:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Ooh yes, Euros Childs. I'd almost forgotten about him.

Anna, Thursday, 5 September 2002 07:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Lek fancies Nick Dastoor.

Pete (Pete), Thursday, 5 September 2002 08:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Kates Bush

Especially in the infamous pink "nipple tank top".

gazza, Thursday, 5 September 2002 08:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Forget Jonny Greenwood, what about Ed O'Brien? *sighs*

Leigh, Thursday, 5 September 2002 09:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Hello all - am back!

Pop star crushes I have none (bit difficult really, the point of the crush is that you never speak to the lust object and what popstars say to me in interview is like 'feh! you had to go and ruin it!') apart from the Ian Mac one (and I got over that after the first question and attendant hummnah-hummnah). Had friend with crushitis for half of every issue of Melody Maker and designs on putting out contract on Angie Marr circa 1985. I had to monitor the situation and protect world from crushed out friend.

A few pop stars have had crushes on me, though. Which is just the way I like it.

Saw L Laverne at friend's birthday drinks two weeks ago, she's not too thin.

Nicole: cough cough cough Brett Anderson doesn't know who Steve Dallas even is. Check the Britmag rack in the next weeks (wink).

Anna: mail me on the home mail, not the hotmail!

suzy (suzy), Thursday, 5 September 2002 09:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Nicole: cough cough cough Brett Anderson doesn't know who Steve Dallas even is. Check the Britmag rack in the next weeks (wink).

It figures. But welcome back!

Nicole (Nicole), Thursday, 5 September 2002 10:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I had a crush on John Lennon for 2:44 about 15 minutes ago, then on the chick from Lasgo for 5:53, Do for 3:52, currently on Dannii Minogue for the next 3:03 and soon I will have a crush on Daniel Johns for 3:42. Lovin' it.

toraneko (toraneko), Thursday, 5 September 2002 12:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Another Laverne-ite...

but mostly, it's Sarah Nixey/Moore/Nixey-Moore. Even if she is married now. Still gawjis...

Mr Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 5 September 2002 12:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh yeah, and Neko Case. Spent far too long staring at the cover of The Furnace Room Lullabies...

Mr Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 5 September 2002 12:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Gwen Stefani!! Cor, phwoah!! Red plaid pants with wallet chain!! and white undershirt!! ps. that is as articulate as i can be on the subject

Dave M. (rotten03), Thursday, 5 September 2002 14:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Dave, it is probably for the best that Ned is on vacation right now as I can't imagine the invective that would spew from him at the mere concept of fancying Gwen Stefani. :) (I agree with you, though.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 5 September 2002 14:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Dan, heads up!

Gwen Stefani's nice. Or at least to me she was.

Roll up, roll up - at some stage I'll tell y'all if your crush was actually an asshole iRL. Fire away (just not at me)!

suzy (suzy), Thursday, 5 September 2002 14:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Punk rock girl
Give me a chance
Punk rock girl

We'll dress like Minnie Pearl
Just you and me punk rock girl

Dave M. (rotten03), Thursday, 5 September 2002 14:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I am a mentalist as OBVIOUSLY I did not say

Kate Bush

Swoon sigh ect ect - I do not know what happened but thinking she was great has suddenly turned into a massive grebt big CRUSH - I ph34r it might have something to do with a HUGE gallery of pictures. There is a great one where she looks like a ZOMBIE MISTRESS!

Haha my hair should be looking like this, oh if only. I think I am going to start a Kate Bush fan club - the first rule is you have to dance and wave your arms about like an arse. WHO WANTS IN?

And the boys have to be able to sing

"whot are we goooooooing to do?????"

"weeeee are all goooooing to DIE!!!"

Sarah (starry), Tuesday, 10 September 2002 13:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Nik Kershaw.

toraneko (toraneko), Tuesday, 10 September 2002 14:16 (twenty-two years ago)

In case anyone didn't hear a word I've posted here or on 22 for the past few months, my massive fuckoff pop star crush = Andrew Scott From Sloan but erm, yeah, lately I've also been crushing on Brett Anderson, curse you, Suzy. Did you know my horrorscope for last week said "someone you have had a crush on for a long time will finally pay you some attention." This was not supposed to mean BRETT ANDERSON HUGGING ME. Ooh, I still feel all gooey inside. But I mean, yeah, erm, Andrew Scott. Yum.

kate, Tuesday, 10 September 2002 15:05 (twenty-two years ago)

what Toraneko said (way way above)

the pinefox, Tuesday, 10 September 2002 15:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Ooh yeah, I'm with Jerry the Nipper. Also, I have a platonic crush on Alicia from the Aislers Set, but that doesn't count. I just want to be her best friend.

I have a huge crush on Toraneko, but she'd tell me to fuck off or something so I'm happy for it to remain 10,000 miles away. Similarly, I'm not expecting a more positive response from Kathleen Hanna, but hell, crushes aren't about gettin' some.

Mark C (Mark C), Tuesday, 10 September 2002 16:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I can never hear mention of the sex appeal of Kate Bush without recalling a former 'friend' of mine (i.e. someone I knew well, moved in the same circles as, but hated) who responded to the subject by saying "She lives near me. I sometimes see her down the local Tescos. An old rat, but she's still got nice tits." This has served to put me off Kate Bush (not because his opinion influences me, but because I'd rather not be reminded of him at all).

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 10 September 2002 17:25 (twenty-two years ago)
