Branching off from Anna's thread - people you'd just genuinely like to sit down and have a sedate little chat with.

Initially, I think I'd go for Paul and Phil Hartnoll of Orbital.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 3 September 2002 17:55 (twenty-two years ago)

vanessa carlton, j mascis, peter and tarquin katis, james kochalka, sarah from velocity girl, shakira and brett michaels. Seriously, this would be the greatest tea party I could possibly imagine. The tea would flow and we'd have a vast selection of cakes.

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 3 September 2002 17:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Neil Tennant, please. And Kelis (see other thread - who says that a polite tea couldn't lead to marriage?). Mos Def. The Hartnolls are a good thought too.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 3 September 2002 18:09 (twenty-two years ago)

momus, britney spears, morissey, justin timberlake, bob dylan, neil tennat, marc almond, marriane faithfull

anthony easton (anthony), Tuesday, 3 September 2002 19:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Xtina Aguilera was over at D****'s place last week!! Xtina's boyfriend was with her and when my friend's friend - who is very nice and smart and totally clueless abt pop culture - sat across from Xtina the boyfriend says "you have to PAY to sit there, you know". D****'s friend gets up - "Honey I don't have to pay to sit anywhere" and storms off to friend's room - "who is that TRAMP with the 13-year-old thug in there?" Among other quality moments: Xtina declined food from the kitchen in favor of dispatching 13yoT to the deli downstairs who returned with Chef Boyardee; Xtina meets D**** and barely nods to him - so he mentions that this is his HOME and WELCOME - and she backpedals into graciousness; Xtina and 13yoT do it in the bathroom. Mmmm goodness.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 3 September 2002 20:10 (twenty-two years ago)

yes yes tracer but did she have cake? (also: wot *is* chef boyardee? is it like pot noodle?)

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 3 September 2002 20:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Robert Forster and Lawrence

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 3 September 2002 20:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Marc Almond, Dolly Parton, Nina Hagen, all of the B52s, Marilyn Manson, David Johansen.

Arthur (Arthur), Tuesday, 3 September 2002 21:30 (twenty-two years ago)

canned pasta, mark!

Josh (Josh), Tuesday, 3 September 2002 21:43 (twenty-two years ago)

stuart murdoch, morrissey (actually, maybe not morrissey, because apparently he is very difficult to have a conversation with and i think the uncomfortable silence would be unbearable - actually i would probably be stuffing my face with CAKE so wouldn't notice but i'll change my vote to johnny marr instead) ummm also krs-1.

sand.y, Tuesday, 3 September 2002 21:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Eno. Most other pop stars/musicians/etc. would be pretty boring. Except Eminem, but he would probably wee on the couch.

Nicole (Nicole), Tuesday, 3 September 2002 22:02 (twenty-two years ago)

But Eno would sit around and make you read his mind or something and then chuckle when you got it wrong!!

Arthur's answer is pretty bulletproof except for the Marilyn Manson part.

Yes, Chef Boy-ar-dee is canned pasta. And it is of course our new nickname for her. The roommate responsible for this home invasion is getting the boot for one-too-many instances of similar behavior from his invitees.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 4 September 2002 02:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think Eminem would be invited to tea with Lawrence if he's going to go around weeing on couches.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 4 September 2002 02:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I would like to have Hideki Kaji over for tea. But I am not a Swedish model:( Also if Kahimi Karie, Keigo Oyamada, Takako Minekawa, Hiromix, and Hirohisa Horie wanted to join us that would be fine too.)

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 4 September 2002 02:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Robert Forster and Lawrence

ooh Lawrence, yes, invite me, too, please!

felicity (felicity), Wednesday, 4 September 2002 02:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh I'd love to see how J. Mascis got on with Vanessa Carlton, or Justin Timberlake with Morrissey.

Livvie, Wednesday, 4 September 2002 05:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Claudia Gonson, Chris Geddes, Tim Gane and Kristen Hersh. Small but select.

Mark C (Mark C), Thursday, 12 September 2002 22:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Xtina and 13yoT do it in the bathroom.

How did I overlook this sentence before??? This is genius.

I would like to be chuckled at by Eno, btw.

Nicole (Nicole), Friday, 13 September 2002 00:18 (twenty-two years ago)

stuart murdoch, alasdair maclean, lawrence, lloyd cole, the pinefox (he's a star!), dave q (automatically one on account of his attitude), jessica griffin (every kind of cake to please her!!!), amy linton... and that's all i can think of now.

youn, Friday, 13 September 2002 02:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, you're right, Tracer, Marilyn's too serious and full of himself. I'll trade him for Twiggy. He's just a krazee goth cutup from Florida, sure to be loads of fun. I'm probably the only person on ILX who was upset that he was kicked out of the band.

Arthur (Arthur), Friday, 13 September 2002 04:44 (twenty-two years ago)

are you all on crack? i find it safest to assume that even the people who's music i like are cockfarmers. that way it will be a nice surprise if any of them are even half way nice people.

Alan (Alan), Friday, 13 September 2002 08:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I didn't even think of Dave Q! Good answer, youn...

Nicole (Nicole), Friday, 13 September 2002 11:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Andy Partridge and Colin Moulding, obv. I'd like to have Vanessa Carlton round, if only so I could strangle her.

robin carmody (robin carmody), Saturday, 14 September 2002 17:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Alan is sort of right, but last week Anna told me about meeting Kelis, who I cited on this and the pop star crushes thread, and how fun and lovely she was. I'm not sure that either this info, or an alternate view that she was an arrogant bitch, say, impacts my taste for her much.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 14 September 2002 17:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I've had Lawrence 'round for tea...just remember: fully skimmed milk.

suzy (suzy), Saturday, 14 September 2002 17:46 (twenty-two years ago)

did he decorate your house?

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 14 September 2002 17:58 (twenty-two years ago)

No, we were all at Turnmills and my flat was closest to it and much tea and zoot smoking happened. It was back when Heavenly Social was there.

suzy (suzy), Saturday, 14 September 2002 18:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, who the hell is Lawrence? The incidence of his name on this thread is amazing.

I just assumed you meant the guy from changing rooms.

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 14 September 2002 18:02 (twenty-two years ago)

felt. denim. go-kart mozart

gareth (gareth), Saturday, 14 September 2002 18:03 (twenty-two years ago)

i mean, thats who lawrence is. not who i'd want around for tea.

i'd have Nelly round, we'd go somewhere hella cool, could you imaginwe how great that'd be?

gareth (gareth), Saturday, 14 September 2002 18:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm also inviting Kelly Osborne.

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 14 September 2002 18:07 (twenty-two years ago)

popstars who have been in my house already: cath carroll, kazuko hohki, kate lollie

mark s (mark s), Saturday, 14 September 2002 18:36 (twenty-two years ago)

mark s (mark s), Saturday, 14 September 2002 18:38 (twenty-two years ago)

haha oops

mark s (mark s), Saturday, 14 September 2002 18:40 (twenty-two years ago)

King of Partick.

Mark C (Mark C), Saturday, 14 September 2002 19:54 (twenty-two years ago)

someone was telling me about King of Partick the other day. shit, who was it...could it have been chris brassica?

gareth (gareth), Sunday, 15 September 2002 11:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Popstars, tea, my house: Lawrence, Huggy Bear, Sleeper, Sonya Madan, Toog, Cupid Car Club, Blood Sausage, Laika, Eggs, Tsunami, Anjali, Mambo Taxi, Lollies, Chris T-T, Bob Nastanovich...

suzy (suzy), Sunday, 15 September 2002 13:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Ozzy, Bootsy and Shakira. Oh, the fun we'd have...

Daniel_Rf, Sunday, 15 September 2002 14:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Unless the sausage, eggs and lollies are the comestibles on offer, I'm avoiding Suzy's (haha as if I have an invite anyway!).

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 15 September 2002 14:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes Gareth, twas me, can't remember how it came up though??

erm, I'd have that lovely keyboard player from Camera Obscura, Stevie Jackson, Tanya Donnelly, Norman Blake and Wilson Pickett. Plus I'd also invite Johann Cruyff, Frank Gehry, Kirsten Dunst and Paul Smith.

chris (chris), Sunday, 15 September 2002 16:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Ok serious question: do people in England really invite friends over for tea? And they are served actual tea? When you say "would you like to come over for tea?" are you actually saying come over for lunch or something like that? I've been asked to meet people at coffee shops, but never ever over to their house for tea (or coffee). Of course, I find the idea of inviting people over for tea (and cake!) a lovely idea; right now it seems homey and sweet and far from my experience of everyday life. I can't pick a pop star right now. How about Nina Simone? She'd probably come with a personal assistant, expect to be flattered (not that I'd refrain) and stay for about 5 minutes. I can see her enjoying a cup of tea, though. Here's a plan: invite an actual person I know over for tea. Could it work?

Sean (Sean), Sunday, 15 September 2002 16:23 (twenty-two years ago)

yes we do sean: of course, it's usually people who aren't coming very far, otherwise you offer them something a bit more substantial

mark s (mark s), Sunday, 15 September 2002 16:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think I have ever been invited anywhere for tea, nor have I ever invited anyone here for tea. Of course all of you are welcome anytime...

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 15 September 2002 16:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Even me? You're in London, tho, right? :* (

Popstars I'd invite: Momus, Ryan Adams, err, Vast Aire ("they're soo SHOUTY!"), Everrett True (I nrly bought an Everett True Connection CD today, just cause), err, I dunno. Mike Skinner!!!! Yes, Mike Skinner.

david h (david h), Sunday, 15 September 2002 17:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Popstars I've already had round for tea, or who have already had me round for tea:

Dandy Warhols, Slumber Party, Black Nielson, Goldrush, Fonda 500, The Original Sins/Brother JT, Creatures of the Golden Dawn, His Name Is Alive, Ron Asheton, Everett True ...is that enough namedropping yet?

Popstars remaining that I would like to have round for tea: Probably Alex James. (yeah, Suzy, why can't you ever introduce me to popstars I *want* to meet?)

kate, Sunday, 15 September 2002 17:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, if you're ever in East London, David, and you fancy a cup of tea... (Actually I virtually never drink tea, so I'd then have to pop out to buy some milk, at least.)

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 15 September 2002 17:52 (twenty-two years ago)

after seeing morrissey be totally relaxed and charming on the craig kilbourne show, i want to add morrissey back to my list.

sand.y, Sunday, 15 September 2002 18:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Popstars remaining that I would like to have round for tea: Probably Alex James.

The AJSAS lives on!

Nicole (Nicole), Sunday, 15 September 2002 18:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't care if he's fat and looks like a potato now. I'd still just like to have him round for tea. We could chat about astronomy and modern art. :-)

And I could serve him cheese. Which you could not serve Laurence.

kate, Sunday, 15 September 2002 18:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Being a Northern Monkey, if I invite someone round for tea then they're coming round for their evening meal.

chris (chris), Sunday, 15 September 2002 18:32 (twenty-two years ago)

david h: I'm pretty sure Ryan Adams wouldn't come around for tea. He'd go on an all-night drinking binge with ya instead!
