Peeping Tom, although there are a few other that were close.

I certainly wouldn't have, but hey. (Le Bateau Ivre), Thursday, 5 January 2012 11:54 (thirteen years ago) link

Peeping Tom and Psycho are close; I'll vote for Peeping Tom, which is a little bit creepier to me. Like Carnival of Souls and Baby Jane fine. Haven't seen Black Sunday. Homicidal, from what I remember, is pretty funny.

Wow, for some reason it slipped my mind that "Psycho" and "Peeping Tom" came out the same year. Anyway, "Psycho," easily. It's a masterpiece that transcends its genre. "Peeping Tow" and "Carnival of Souls" right behind for historic import. But I would stress that "Eyes Without a Face" is an incredible film, "The Innocents" equally incredible, and "Village of the Damned," "Baby Jane," "Triffids" and several of the Hammer flicks pretty iconic.

Gosh, this is harder than I thought. Coming up with a number two, at least.

The 2 great films are Peeping Tom and Psycho, but I don't particularly see them as horror films. Eyes Without a Face, otherwise, and what about Lang's The Last Testament of Dr Mabuse?

sorry, I mean The 1,000 Eyes of Dr. Mabuse.

The Innocents is just as great as Psycho or Peeping Tom, if we're talking 'mainstream'/non-genre horror flicks; it has to be one of the most beautiful ghost stories ever filmed, up there with ugetsu monogatari and kwaidan, imho. Two of the Terence Fishers (Brides of Dracula and Curse of the Werewolf) on this list are amongst the highpoints of Hammer's output, and few films can match the intensity of Black Sunday's opening sequence, which is horrific even now. On the other hand, I find Carnival of Souls to be pretty draggy tbh, ghostly spookface carnivalesque moments aside.

IMDb puts The 1,000 Eyes of Dr. Mabuse into the drama/crime/thriller categories, so it was missed.

I ended up voting for The Innocents.

Man, they knew how to name horror movies back then.

This thread has reminded me I need to get 'Mother Joan of the Angels'. Have only seen 3 of these, for shame.

Yeah Yeah Bohney (Craigo Boingo), Monday, 30 January 2012 12:08 (twelve years ago) link

Impossible choice, but Carnival of Souls it is.
