curious what ppl answered to:
"A significant advantage of a one-party state is that it avoids all the arguments that delay progress in a democratic political system."
i disagreed, but more to register my queasiness at one-party states and less bc i was evaluating whether this was actually an advantage or not. it seems like sometimes it would be an advantage and sometimes it would be a terrible flaw.
― Mordy, Thursday, 5 January 2012 22:38 (thirteen years ago)
i think its a coded version of "making the trains run on time" tbh
― blurgh (jjjusten), Thursday, 5 January 2012 22:39 (thirteen years ago)
But the contradiction is that a one-party state wouldn't be a democratic political system.
― lumber up, limbaugh down (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 5 January 2012 22:39 (thirteen years ago)
like, i believe that democratic governments are the best governments. at the same time, i think that gridlock is a disadvantage of the democratic system despite its overall superiority, and that lack of gridlock maybe indeed be an advantage of one-party states

I loled at "the establishment" part.
― lumber up, limbaugh down (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 5 January 2012 22:44 (thirteen years ago)
Thus, I sometimes pine for a parliamentary system where conceivably a majority (or coalition) have a mandate to make a couple of discrete campaign promises happen instead of the endless oppostional back and forth of congress vs president and all the checks and balances of the US system but, otoh, those have often been useful, too.

― rebecca blah (k3vin k.), Monday, 9 January 2012 17:03 (thirteen years ago)
tolstoy didn't work at all because too many of the questions were designed for 21c-american assumptions -- as far as the test is concerned, if you think sex outside of marriage is immoral (and leads to train suicide), you are an authoritarian, so devout christian anarchist tolstoy ends up:
http://www.politicalcompass.org/facebook/pcgraphpng.php?ec=-4.50&soc=-1.59
it was also hard to get across the whole point of tolstoy which is that most of the things he condemns are his best features
― occupy the A train (difficult listening hour), Monday, 9 January 2012 17:15 (thirteen years ago)
(i realize that anna's extramarital sex is also cheating and to us this seems like the relevant thing but i suspect even/especially for noted horndog lev tolstoy the extramarital part is v. important)

My problem with these casual website tests is that I can never sift through the ambiguities and nebulosities of their ill-designed questions sufficiently well to understand which of the many possible interpretations is the one the test designer intended. They all end up being tests of reading comprehension and it's the test-giver who generally fails that test, not me.

Sanders/Corbyn def too far to the bottom left there. By the criteria they use, someone who believes in European-style social democracy should be dead centre on the left-right axis. The scale on this test always seems way off to me. Everyone ends up about 5 points to the left and 2 points to the bottom of where they should imo.
