i was thinkin of this same poll

needs a dvd imo

The Express Yourself video is maybe the easy winner for me, but "Straight Up" is so beautiful in its own way.

Freedom '90 - easily

☆★☆彡彡 (ENBB), Saturday, 7 January 2012 03:33 (thirteen years ago)

how can it be anything other than "Bop Til You Drop"??????

lumber up, limbaugh down (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 7 January 2012 03:34 (thirteen years ago)

Cold Hearted!

Blah Sabbath (Drugs A. Money), Saturday, 7 January 2012 14:04 (thirteen years ago)

I can only speak for what I hazily remember but I'm thinking that Express Yourself to Freedom 90 is a helluva run

Blah Sabbath (Drugs A. Money), Saturday, 7 January 2012 14:07 (thirteen years ago)

"Express Yourself" is my second favorite Madonna video of all time. And yet there are so many good choices on this list, I'm so conflicted! Voting against Freedom '90 seems wrong in every conceivable way.

It occurs to me I like Fincher better as a video director than as a movie director, even though I have really liked some of his movies.

Nicole, Saturday, 7 January 2012 14:12 (thirteen years ago)

I think I'd agree with you on that point. Also on the voting against Freedom 90 seeming wrong.

☆★☆彡彡 (ENBB), Saturday, 7 January 2012 14:16 (thirteen years ago)

I voted for "Oh Father." I agree with the talking heads in I Want My MTV: her most underrated video.

lumber up, limbaugh down (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 7 January 2012 14:23 (thirteen years ago)

Got to give some love for "Janie's Got a Gun," "Cold Hearted Snake," and "Cradle of Love," videos so great they made iconic hits of truly mediocre material.

In that (also truly mediocre) MTV book, Crawford reveals that in her bathtub shot she's actually simply slathered with slime to make it look like she's wet and in the bath, and admirably shrugs it off as just another uncomfortable modeling situation.

That book, btw, does set up a nice dialectic between Fincher and Bay as different sides of the same coin, virtuosos with totally different sets of aesthetics and goals.

A local cover-ish band threw Bourgeois Tagg into its One Hit Wonders show, and I must admit I had never heard the song before that.

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 7 January 2012 14:35 (thirteen years ago)

How was it mediocre?

lumber up, limbaugh down (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 7 January 2012 14:38 (thirteen years ago)

Cold Hearted Snake is wonderful however I do put that down to the choreography and dancing of Paula Abdul rather than Fincher's direction. She wasn't always an overly medicated joke!

Oh man I sort of forgot about Cradle of Love. I loved that when it came out. I remember thinking the babysitter looked very cool and digging the fact that her name was "Devon". LOL. .

☆★☆彡彡 (ENBB), Saturday, 7 January 2012 15:09 (thirteen years ago)

gotta go with "Roll With It" narrowly over "Express Yourself" and "Freedom '90"

I have strong memories of Cradle of Love from the days when we first got MTV and I was still holding out hope that it might show boobies.

frogBaSeball (Hurting 2), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 00:14 (thirteen years ago)

oh and even moreso for vogue. Man Fincher is probably single-handedly responsible for like 20% of the sexual frustration I experienced as an early adolescent.

frogBaSeball (Hurting 2), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 00:16 (thirteen years ago)

sorry, poor choice of words

two years pass...

the videos fincher's directed since he started in his feature-film career are a funny mix:

"Who Is It?", Michael Jackson (1992)
"Bad Girl", Madonna (1993)
"Love Is Strong", The Rolling Stones (1994)
"6th Avenue Heartache", The Wallflowers (1996)
"Judith", A Perfect Circle (2000)
"Only", Nine Inch Nails (2005)
"Suit & Tie", Justin Timberlake and Jay-Z (2013)
