Does anyone else here sometimes feel seedy posting on ilX

I'm probably alone. And I'm certainly not making a dig at fellow posters with this question; but my own self-image isn't done any favours when I post on the internet (currently only ilX). I feel a bit, sort of ... seedy. It fools me into feeling more lonely than I actually am - sort of lonely hearts. I am burdened less by this feeling when I'm posting on I Love Music. Why? I hope noone takes too much umbrage. I am only being open - not at all beligerant. I've said it now.

(Note to self: tone down the smut.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 4 September 2002 13:50 (twenty-three years ago)

er, not really. ILx keeps me entertained. If I'm feeling lonely, I find time away from the internet helps. But, er, no ILX doesn't make me have feelings of lonliness I don't already have.

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 4 September 2002 13:51 (twenty-three years ago)

not that I have any feelings of lonliness.

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 4 September 2002 13:53 (twenty-three years ago)

I can understand where you are coming from. I felt that way initially. However, this board gives everyone who contributes or even lurks the opportunity to meet vast amounts of people who share similar interests, and, at least in my case, i would not have this opportunity where I am living right now. there are some on this board who live in huge cities with enough people to replace this board, but meeting people in big cities can be very difficult, especially after a long day of work,

This board, for me, is the only thing that lives up to the rhetoric of the "internet community".

As for your feelings regarding ILM vs ILE, this is probably due to the fact that ILM is (partially) about specialized knowledge. Whereas with ILE, there might be plenty of people you know with whom you can discuss favorite meals, favorite cities, etc. I know a lot more people who like NYC or Thai food compared to My Bloody Valentine (who are not even THAT obscure).

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Wednesday, 4 September 2002 13:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, I concur too, especially when it starts getting all pally rather than just being a discussion forum.

I'm not sure 'seedy' is the right word, though, though I certainly do feel seedy with the current set of subject headings on my work screen.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 4 September 2002 14:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, okay -- Not having been a contributor for very long, and reading through the experiences of certain forlorn posters (in the Graham/friends thread), I fear these threads may be like insidious fumes in a handkerchief, held to the mouths of 'real-life' relationships? On the same token, I strongly suspect I'm being hysterical and a wose.

Owen, Wednesday, 4 September 2002 14:05 (twenty-three years ago)

woose

Owen, Wednesday, 4 September 2002 14:20 (twenty-three years ago)

loneliness is a taboo subject, which probably gets talked about a lot more openly on the net than in "real life" = hurrah for the net

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 4 September 2002 14:20 (twenty-three years ago)

moose?

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 4 September 2002 14:21 (twenty-three years ago)

So, perhaps, Mark S -- talking candidly about loneliness, or just reading the posts of others on such matters, can make one feel more lonely than one in fact is (in my case, at least). Para-theraputically, the internet then goes on to offer a certain degree of comfort in response to a loneliness that one never actually had before tuning in to the online discussions?

Owen, Wednesday, 4 September 2002 14:31 (twenty-three years ago)

if you decide to play football and sustain an injury you wouldn't have sustained not playing football, that doesn't make the injury unreal => of course participating in an interweb community has emotional consequences: if it didn't you probably wouldn't be aware you were doing it...

if you think the trade-off between the good effects and the bad effects of particular kinds of thread is negative then obviously don't read them — i think it probably makes more people feel "more angry than they in fact are" than "more lonely"

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 4 September 2002 14:46 (twenty-three years ago)

(to Owen) yes then you can start attending FAPs and feel seedy about that.

You're not being a wuss but a discussion forum is a lot more social than say playing computer gamesk. I'm much happier since I replaced nethack with ILX. For one thing, the random number generators here are much more lifelike.

felicity (felicity), Wednesday, 4 September 2002 14:50 (twenty-three years ago)

(haha as all will attest, my ilx jokes are all funnier than they in fact are!!)

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 4 September 2002 14:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Mark S -- There is certainly a lot of anger around, I won't deny that.

Oh, it's wuss, is it? I was wondering how is was spelt.

Owen, Wednesday, 4 September 2002 14:55 (twenty-three years ago)

yes i do. i dohn't really post 'personal problem' stuff here, although i did on the graham thread, which i wouldn't normally have done. this was a) to show graham that other people have problems too, and b) the timing was poor, given that recent events have been problematic to an extent where i have allowed it to spill out onto ilx

gareth (gareth), Wednesday, 4 September 2002 17:27 (twenty-three years ago)

sometimes i get a lonely feeling on ilx because the times when i'm on are fairly low-traffic. it seems the workday in GMT thru workday US times are the busiest, and i don't get on until after, except for maybe a few minutes in the morning. (i am pacific time US) i do really like the times when you are posting alongside others - i had this experience last night on the cd organization thread, trading posts with lyra and aaron.

i also am a bit sad that it seems the AIM scene has died down from where it was a few months ago. but i haven't been on too much myself, so i can't point any fingers. some of the serious regulars are off doing other things, being in love, getting promotions and having to (gasp!) WORK MORE (heh heh) etc. actually, what has happened is that everybody got new screen names and is off talking without me cuz i am such an ass.

ron (ron), Wednesday, 4 September 2002 23:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Ron, we need more PST after-work posters.

Mark has a good point when he says you should just skip threads if you need to- there are many (more on ILM) that I don't see the need to read; you should decide what you want out out of posting/reading for yourself.
I like ILX because I use it like I did bboards in school- a lot of evenings I'm home & working on finishing up software projects, so it's nice to have a window on my desktop to read ILX in while I work.

lyra (lyra), Wednesday, 4 September 2002 23:48 (twenty-three years ago)

yes we do, lyra!! where my homies??

ron (ron), Thursday, 5 September 2002 01:34 (twenty-three years ago)

I am not PST but rather someone who goes to bed late... maybe someday I will start a thread and tell everyone about the last two miserable weeks of my life, but now now cause it would be *seedy*. just kidding (though not about the misery)!

Anyway, the loneliness issue is a tough one. I have noticed that the quality of my threads and posts is directly related to how I was feeling about myself at the time. I tend to think about the word *user*. We use computers, and I think it is no accident that the same word is used in conjunction with drugs and alcohol. If you are alone and feeling depressed, then having a drink, or reading about someone else's problems will exacerbate the situation. if you are feeling great, then having a beer or posting on threads will be more enjoyable, as you will be doing these things with friends. My rule for myself is to not log on unless I am feeling content and ready to contribute. Of course, I break my rule quite often, as can be seen in the "Track ID" thread I have on ILM ;-). Impatience manifest!

two years pass...
Negative emotions associated with posting; has it become more acceptable to post to boards like these, or does it still make some people feel dirty or seedy.

"I'm not sure 'seedy' is the right word, though, though I certainly do feel seedy with the current set of subject headings on my work screen." Funny how some of the earlier posters seem to think "seedy" is exclusively to do with smutty sex. Seedy is exactly the right word.

jools mac, Wednesday, 8 June 2005 14:37 (twenty years ago)

I usually don't feel anything. ILX is like my equivalent of staring vacantly at the TV I think. I mean, I THINK things, I just don't connect the experience to much, emotionally.

Archel (Archel), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 14:48 (twenty years ago)

Seedy no.
