Marcello's In Hospital

Hi everyone, Marcello asked me to pass this along to the ILX massive - he had a mini-stroke on Saturday evening and has been recuperating at King's College Hospital. I am going to see him later today and will give you updates as to how he is doing. This morning they are going to assess him for movement and speech, his blood pressure and so on, and I expect he will return home soon, though how soon I don't know. (In case you're wondering who I am, I'm his wife, Lena.) If you've read elsewhere about this sorry for the repeat posting but the ILX registering system is a little slow!

Sending my best to you both, Lena. My partner had a mini-stroke (TIA - transient ischemic attack) scare a couple of months ago, although they later back-pedalled on it, but his blood pressure was far too high and he's now on pills to stabilise it. I guess it's better to have the mini-version and nip the causes in the bud, rather than letting things build up to something more serious, but it's still a scary event to witness.

about 4 or 5 years ago our surgery called me in for a random check up. BP test,blood tests etc, they did it for everyone who hadn't had any of these things. My BP was high, been on tablets since. We got one of those BP machines from Lloyds chemists. Best thing anyone could do is get one and take a reading every few weeks. if its over 140/90 then while it may not be anything to worry about, its worth popping into the doctors for them to monitor.

iirc my bp was a bit over that but it wasnt threatening in itself but if left for a long time it could have ended up doing so. So pop into Lloyds and do yourselves a favour.

You can take the boy out of Lanarkshire...

Marcello, you'll get well soon, I'm sure of it! I had a ruptured brain aneurysm in December 2009, and if you met me today, you'd never know it. I've talked to a *lot* of people in our vintage that have had strokes and aneurysms and while they suck and are scary as hell, we can get through them! Fight on, man, fight on.

Hi everyone, thanks so much for all your support, I can't tell you how much he appreciates it, and I do too! Marcello has yet to get up and moving but his general being and speech are improving and I expect once he is able to get up and be active then they will release him; he doesn't have any problems besides his digestive system and of course his blood pressure...he's getting medication for that, and once he can actually be up & at 'em the other problem will sort itself out, I feel.

Thanks once more and like ASR said upthread, blood pressure is something you should always keep an eye on, be it high or low...

Hello everyone, and first thanks for all your good wishes, Marcello and I really appreciate them. He is definitely on the mend - off oxygen and out of bed and moving around, walking by himself. He still needs some physiotherapy though, so he is being moved to St. Thomas' for that and will be home by this weekend I expect. I will be seeing him tomorrow as usual and report back then, but now things are looking very good. Thanks again everybody!

Marcello is now at St. Thomas' and they are doing physiotherapy already with him, testing him mostly; when I arrived this afternoon he was getting an MRI scan of his brain to make sure there were no stray bloodclots there. It's a nice hospital but he is still eager to get home, but he's going to have to improve his balance and get used to climbing stairs before he can do that! Thanks again for all your kind wishes, they are helping both of us very much.

Lena - i emailed Nathalie as I figured she didn't know and she said she couldn't get her log-in to work but she sent Marcello an email. If you could tell him and pass on her best wishes I'm sure she'd be grateful and would help cheer Marcello up as I know they're good pals.

Thanks for that Armand, I'll let Marcello know tomorrow! He is getting a bit restless as so far there is no definite reason (that the doctors can figure out) for his stroke, his MRI showed nothing, and his heart is being monitored for a day as they attempt to figure things out. His physio went very well indeed and his blood pressure is down thanks to medication; he just needs a bit more speech and physio and he will want to come home, whether the docs have him figured or not! His appetite for reading matter & food is increasing and in many ways he is back to normal...
