As you might know, since the last server died we have switched to running on Amazon's servers. There were a few headaches during the switch (and some smaller problems still to iron out), but so far it seems to be going quite well.
It's a bit early to know the costs, but it looks like they'll be $100-$150 a month, which compares pretty well with what we paid before, and we don't have to worry about hardware any more, either.
We get big discounts on Amazon if we can pay a year in advance, so what I'd like to do next is get together a year's worth of hosting costs. I'll use the same paypal-based drive we used before. Last time some people asked for a bit more warning on a fund drive, so we'll start it next Tuesday, Jan 17.

sweet! btw stet, do you know why "ilxor.com" and "www.ilxor.com" appear to be different insofar as links clicked in one instance don't appear brown in the other
― bob loblaw people (dayo), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 13:04 (thirteen years ago)
it's because your browser sees them as different sites. It's handy, especially if you're a mod, because you can be logged in as an admin on one and as a normal user on the other.

yeah out of interest i seem to get logged out if somebody posts a link to the other ilx site but it's not a problem
― Poppy Newgod and the Phantom Banned (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 13:14 (thirteen years ago)
It's not that you get logged out exactly - if you hit back you'll still be logged in. It's that the link takes from (eg) ilxor.com where you are logged in to www.ilxor.com where you aren't.
― stet, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 13:16 (thirteen years ago)
www is so dumb they never shouldve made that part of the internet
― lag∞n, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 13:17 (thirteen years ago)
yeah i figured, assuming i'm logged in at both sites i don't notice tbh.
anyway cheers for sorting this nightmarish time-hoover

Sure, with the benefit of hindsight...
But originally? I expect he thought it over for a whole hour, maybe two, decided it was a good idea based on his first notions, plugged it in, and just plowed right ahead with the design. Later, when he showed it to other software engineers in the early stages, I confidently imagine not one of them paid the slightest attention to this design feature (or "guy" in SE-Speak), other than to accept his explanation for its inclusion. Next they all went bonkers over the "cool", "neat" "stuff" in it.
― Aimless, Monday, 16 January 2012 19:44 (thirteen years ago)
It made much more sense at the time, when ppl had eg ftp.ilxor.com, gopher.ilxor.com, smtp.ilxor.com. It was only dumb because he also added http://

― pplains, Monday, 16 January 2012 19:54 (thirteen years ago)
but (splutters) the hypertext transfer protocol was, like, a whole new language protocol and you had to alert the interpreter to its presence, and the COLON was a common delimiter, and FORWARD SLASH FORWARD SLASH was unlikely to be reproduced by accidental keystrokes, and the DOUBLEYEW DOUBLEYEW DOUBLEYEW flagged the requirement to prepare for remote content aceess and identified which kind! Al this unique addressing rigamarole made it so much more extensible in the future!

― Aimless, Monday, 16 January 2012 20:04 (thirteen years ago)
Yeh in case people tried to access www.ilxor.com via FTP or do http over port 80.
The combination of reserved ports and sub-domain conventions more than does the job.

round-necks are much nicer than v-necks. i don't know enough about clothes to do the maths regarding how you combine them with other things and how maybe you have to settle to get a better combo, of less desirable individual parts, but v-necks can be a little weird. round-necks (is that what they're called) are just less jarring.

would 9pm GMT/8am EDT be too early?
― stet, Monday, 16 January 2012 22:45 (thirteen years ago)
i can do 10pm GMT/9am EDT/5pm EST -- the last few runs have all been evening UK time so that seems fair.
― stet, Monday, 16 January 2012 22:46 (thirteen years ago)
No that works! I'm usually on at that time having my breakfast (so that would be 8am Weds morning our time then?)

iirc i read somewhere that TBL wishes he'd gone with http://com/ilxor/blah
― ledge, Tuesday, 17 January 2012 14:10 (thirteen years ago)
Has anyone ever put a port in a publically-disseminated URL?cough cough 8080 cough
― stet, Tuesday, 17 January 2012 14:25 (thirteen years ago)
Tracer yeah, that's what I mean, I think - www.ilxor.com is the ILX website, ftp.ilxor.com is the ILX ftp site, ftp://ftp.ilxor.com gets you the standard ftp interface, http://ftp.ilxor.com gets you richer access to the files.
stet - Sure, but is there anyone with an advertised URL with the port in, which won't also work without the port? We use 8080 all the time when we're making websites, but all of our clients hide it behind another site on 80 (IE port optional) for the public url.
― Andrew Farrell, Tuesday, 17 January 2012 14:40 (thirteen years ago)
No, nobody advertises ports, but we're talking about a hypothetical world where "http://" had never existed. What should happen in that world is an ftp client pointed to ftp.ilxor.com/foo/blah would go to port 21, while a browser pointed there would try port 80, then fall back to 21 if there was no http server.
There's really no need for a protocol specifier at any time. Only in the super-edge case of "want a web browser to do ftp to a server that also has http on ftp.*" would you do ftp.ilxor.com:21/foo/blah
― stet, Tuesday, 17 January 2012 15:10 (thirteen years ago)
Weird, I can see the Google ad from work (on Chrome) but not from home (Firefox) even though I am pretty sure I don't have any blocking extensions installed since it's a brand new laptop.
