I'm guessing that most folx here wd not put Haneke at #2.

And Django Unchained, gtfo

cool. on a smaller scale i'm psyched for the next bujalski, computer chess.

Here's another list:
http://www.hitfix.com/blogs/in-contention/posts/the-lists-our-top-10-most-anticipated-films-of-2012
Annoyingly, it's a gallery, so I'll just type it out:
1. The Dark Knight Rises (Christopher Nolan)2. The Master (Paul Thomas Anderson)3. Prometheus (Ridley Scott)4. Untitled Terence Malick Project [the one w/Affleck + McAdams] 5. Gravity (Alfonso Cuaron)6. Lincoln (Steven Spielberg)7. Django Unchained (Quentin Tarantino)8. Love (Michael Haneke)9. The Great Gatsby (Baz Luhrmann)10. Wettest County (John Hillcoat)
― Bon Ivoj (jaymc), Thursday, 12 January 2012 15:39 (thirteen years ago)
Side-eyeing people who don't think that Djano Unchained is anything other than a gross exploitation movie.
The Grandmasters would be my number one off of that list. xp
― Nicole, Thursday, 12 January 2012 15:40 (thirteen years ago)
9. The Great Gatsby (Baz Luhrmann)
And then we worry about nutbags winning the GOP nomination.
― lumber up, limbaugh down (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 12 January 2012 15:41 (thirteen years ago)
i'm tentatively psyched for the haneke btw, i guess it could be dour but it seems a more interesting kinda suburban key for him to work in than say the white ribbon
― quick brown fox triangle (schlump), Thursday, 12 January 2012 15:42 (thirteen years ago)
That provoked a huge LOLWUT from me -- Gatsby is going to be a trainwreck. xp
― Nicole, Thursday, 12 January 2012 15:42 (thirteen years ago)
I'm cool with Maguire and Mulligan in their roles, but I'm not sure I can take DiCaprio as Gatsby seriously.
― Bon Ivoj (jaymc), Thursday, 12 January 2012 15:46 (thirteen years ago)
c'mon, neither of those Malicks are coming out this year.
― jed_, Thursday, 12 January 2012 15:49 (thirteen years ago)
heinous omisson of ghost rider 2

festival films opening in the US:
The Turin Horse (Tarr)This Is Not a Film (Panahi)
― Dr Morbois de Bologne (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 12 January 2012 15:59 (thirteen years ago)
yeah the discrepancy between what's coming & what in some senses you wish was already is notable (i figure the lists are concentrating on the former, w/stuff like the kiarostami that i wasn't aware anyone knew much about/was expecting anytime soon, etc). the wait for this is not a film is killing me.
― quick brown fox triangle (schlump), Thursday, 12 January 2012 16:01 (thirteen years ago)
DiCaprio and Maguire are both way too old for Gatsby and Nick Carraway, that's a problem that the Redford version had as well. That's not even the least of this film's problems, though. I still can't get over the 3D.
― Nicole, Thursday, 12 January 2012 16:07 (thirteen years ago)
Eh, Nick is ~30, and Maguire can play six years younger.
― Bon Ivoj (jaymc), Thursday, 12 January 2012 16:15 (thirteen years ago)
don't know why anyone would be anticipating luhrman's great gatsby as the canonical great gatsby movie instead of the ridiculous campy visual extravaganza it's going to be
― congratulations (n/a), Thursday, 12 January 2012 16:17 (thirteen years ago)
Gatsby is one of my favorite books and all I would like is even one halfway decent version of it.
― Nicole, Thursday, 12 January 2012 16:35 (thirteen years ago)
ppl should stop trying, every great novel doesn't have to be a film. (there is an acclaimed 8-hour stage version making the rounds tho)
― Dr Morbois de Bologne (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 12 January 2012 16:40 (thirteen years ago)
The Great Gatsby (Baz Luhrmann)
Can't wait for this disaster.
― dor Dumbeddownball (Eric H.), Thursday, 12 January 2012 16:40 (thirteen years ago)
re Kelly Reichardt, I think Paul Dano may have been born to play an ecoterrorist.
― Dr Morbois de Bologne (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 12 January 2012 16:48 (thirteen years ago)
most excited for the master, the wettest county, and the porn version of the wettest county
― congratulations (n/a), Thursday, 12 January 2012 17:50 (thirteen years ago)
gatsby should never have been made into a film imo -- everything good about it is impossible to translate to the screen. without the narrative voice and the elliptical plot (think of how much fitzgerald leaves unexplained about gatsby, and how little interaction we actually get to see between gatsby and daisy), all you've got left is a soap opera about drunk rich people in the '20s.
― (The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Thursday, 12 January 2012 18:52 (thirteen years ago)
can't really imagine a good lincoln film being made anymore (i'm fond of 'young mr lincoln' and even 'abe lincoln in illinois') but part of me wants to have high hopes for the spielberg thing.

the Redford version is like this.
― lumber up, limbaugh down (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 12 January 2012 19:02 (thirteen years ago)
How many of those are in 3D? Gravity, Prometheus, even The Great Gatsby, right?
Looking forward to The Master most. Would have looked forward to the Hillcoat more were it not starring Shia.
Don't hold your breath on the Malick. Dude takes forever to edit, especially when he's filming (at least) another film and pondering whether to extend "Tree of Live" by four hours.

it's sorta hard to imagine a film about lincoln that avoids bluster & excessive, down yr throat gravitas. i don't really have any love for the affleck/pitt jesse james film from a couple of years back but i'd have thought it would need that kind of openness and flexibility to be real interesting, but who knows
― quick brown fox triangle (schlump), Thursday, 12 January 2012 19:18 (thirteen years ago)
Here's a (not very exciting) list of 12 from Time Out NY:

For those who don't want to click through, they are:

Dark Shadows?!?!?! That's going to be a turkey of Ghost Rider 2 proportions.
― Nicole, Thursday, 12 January 2012 19:35 (thirteen years ago)

Like SBC a lot but The Dictator looks dire.
― Simon H., Thursday, 12 January 2012 19:38 (thirteen years ago)
Having just finished reading the Hunger Games series, I admit I am anticipating the movie.

do you like anderson's stuff? as much as hes been suffering from diminishing returns i still got reasonably excited watching the trailer
― 404 (Lamp), Thursday, 12 January 2012 23:15 (thirteen years ago)
although im sure it says something unflattering about me that the only movies i feel particularly excited abt his and whit stillman's newest
― 404 (Lamp), Thursday, 12 January 2012 23:16 (thirteen years ago)
im a hater tbh. i like the first three movies to varying degrees though
― maghrib is back (Hungry4Ass), Thursday, 12 January 2012 23:23 (thirteen years ago)
as much as hes been suffering from diminishing returns
don't think this is true at all, Fox may be his best film imho. that being said, not terribly excited by the trailer. disappointed in presence of Bruce Willis.

― blurgh (jjjusten), Thursday, 12 January 2012 23:30 (thirteen years ago)
disappointed in presence of Bruce Willis.
way more interesting than anyone else in the film; it's the gene hackman in tenenbaums choice, someone muscular and stock instead of storybookish. BW will be good in it, the film will probably be annoying & frustrating in the ways all WA's are (though diverting etc).
― quick brown fox triangle (schlump), Thursday, 12 January 2012 23:59 (thirteen years ago)
im a hater tbh.
haha id forgotten your (quite good imo) posts on 'fantastic mr. fox'.
idk i like willis, the worst part looking part is ed norton but i liked how overly composed and stiff even the trailer is, turning craftmanship into kitsch or w/e

Holee shit, Wes Anderson appears to be ripping off the acclaimed Wes Anderson homage Submarine
― Number None, Friday, 13 January 2012 02:01 (thirteen years ago)
Bruce Willis used to appear in offbeat, rather arty films (Breakfast of Champions, Mortal Thoughts, Nobody's Fool) along with the action lobotomies. Maybe he's coming round again.
Fantastic Mr Fox blew away everything since Rushmore.
― Dr Morbois de Bologne (Dr Morbius), Friday, 13 January 2012 02:08 (thirteen years ago)
can we talk about a foreign guy now? Wong Kar-wai?
― Dr Morbois de Bologne (Dr Morbius), Friday, 13 January 2012 02:09 (thirteen years ago)
Yeah, he's doing a Bruce Lee movie. Sounds cool
― Number None, Friday, 13 January 2012 02:10 (thirteen years ago)
At least Wes Anderson has dropped the pretense of having adults in his movies and cast actual children this time.
― Popture, Friday, 13 January 2012 02:11 (thirteen years ago)
bruce willis kinda rules imo despite everything suggesting he should be hated. he's had a weird-ass career, took as many (more?) chances than fellow tv-to-film bro clooney.
― omar little, Friday, 13 January 2012 02:26 (thirteen years ago)
oooh let's do a bruce willis poll.

apart from Die Hard 5
― Number None, Friday, 13 January 2012 02:30 (thirteen years ago)
Lincoln has Tony Kushner on screenplay duty, so it's likely going the John Adams route vs. dumbing down.

might as well exclude DH from his poll, to make it interesting

where are you, johnny crunch; i'd have thought the regaydas might get distro, the last one was fairly visible & he has links with a lot of places i think (know nada about the new one other than that it maybe intersects diaristically w/places he's lived, which is all over).
& yeah i like bruce willis. he was good on friends.
idk what i think about the WKW, the trailer is weird & has tony leung doing the exact same drop kick on a hundred guys in a row. obviously psyched tho
