Dirty secret: The mobile site still works....

Je55e, Wednesday, 18 January 2012 15:46 (fourteen years ago)

I went last night, saw my article flash for a second and then it turned black.

So yeah, went to the mobile site instead and voila.

pplains, Wednesday, 18 January 2012 15:47 (fourteen years ago)

Only once so far -- a little after midnight.

Girl I want to take you to a JBR (jaymc), Wednesday, 18 January 2012 15:48 (fourteen years ago)

already posted this in the unusual detail thread but whatever:

from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:SOPA_initiative/Learn_more

Is it still possible to access Wikipedia in any way?
Yes. During the blackout, Wikipedia is accessible on mobile devices and smart phones. You can also view Wikipedia normally by disabling JavaScript in your browser, as explained on this Technical FAQ page. Our purpose here isn't to make it completely impossible for people to read Wikipedia, and it's okay for you to circumvent the blackout. We just want to make sure you see our message.

so not too difficult to get around. I don't get why they don't just put a "click here to go to your article" link after their anti-SOPA message.

silverfish, Wednesday, 18 January 2012 15:50 (fourteen years ago)

I really don't get why people are incapable of living without Wiki. There's lots of other sources of information out there.

can still read if you hit "esc" as it loads?

You can go to a cached version of a page, too.

and really you should be double checking against wiki anyway.

0 so far but that's more luck (not writing today but busy enough not to need a wiki black hole timesink) than design

irina-camelia begu (lex pretend), Wednesday, 18 January 2012 18:39 (fourteen years ago)

obv you should use it as a sole resource for REAL RESEARCH but if you use it 50 times a day to remind yourself of some simple fact or settle some argument or whatever, it's easier to go to the one site you know will always be at the top of google results and is (kinda) reliably accurate than to take the extra 30 seconds each time to hunt around for some other source, that time adds up.

lana shel game (some dude), Wednesday, 18 January 2012 18:41 (fourteen years ago)

and again i'm not LOST without it or desperate to find a work-around for the next few hours, but i go to it habitually enough that i'm cracking myself up going to it 10+ times and seeing the blackout screen

lana shel game (some dude), Wednesday, 18 January 2012 18:41 (fourteen years ago)

polyphonic, Wednesday, 18 January 2012 18:44 (fourteen years ago)

i'm not incapable of living without wiki but it's certainly my first point of call for double-checking minor points of fact/idle thoughts, often just cos it's the first google search result and i know the rough likelihood that it'll be reliable.

which is becoming clear to me today - i think i've done about six what-was-that-again forays, all very casually so that i completely forgot about looking at the cached instead of live page.

c sharp major, Wednesday, 18 January 2012 18:45 (fourteen years ago)

google's sympathy vote would have had a lot more impact if they'd blacked out their own site for a day. understand why they're not willing to lose the traffic though.

Little GTFO (contenderizer), Wednesday, 18 January 2012 18:56 (fourteen years ago)

No times. Went once deliberately to see what happened, and tried the app on my phone to see what happened too. Nothing happened.

Sick Mouthy (Scik Mouthy), Wednesday, 18 January 2012 19:01 (fourteen years ago)

maybe i'm wrong but i feel like google would have more to lose, in terms of driving people to bing or whatever for a day, than wiki would

lana shel game (some dude), Wednesday, 18 January 2012 19:03 (fourteen years ago)

the simple english wikipedia is still up, for those of you that need an alternative to regular english wikipedia

silverfish, Wednesday, 18 January 2012 21:46 (fourteen years ago)

I like the SOPA article:

The Stop Online Piracy Act or SOPA is a proposed American law to stop copyright infringement on the Internet.
The Internet community is discussing it.[1]
There are critics who point out hidden risks and consequences which are unplanned.[2]

kinder, Thursday, 19 January 2012 03:30 (fourteen years ago)

So I know it's pretty insignificant matter, but I wish Wikipedia had been able to give itself a nickname that people would have latched onto so we wouldn't be stuck with "Wiki." I gave in ages ago, but it always feels wrong.

They're still fighting that battle over there, though of course it's been lost since day one.

I stopped counting but 10+

more if you count times that I already haxored my way onto a page and then forgot wikipedia was down and tried to get to another page

iatee, Thursday, 19 January 2012 04:46 (fourteen years ago)

lol VegemiteGrrl.

Yeh, iatee, same. First I forget about the strike and click on the link to the article. Then I go back, click to open the cached page, then IMMEDIATELY CLICK ON A LINK TO A SECTION ON THE PAGE :(

Each time I click, remember, curse, hit back back back!, see the article for a split second, then blackness.

Je55e, Thursday, 19 January 2012 05:29 (fourteen years ago)

The amount of "how can I do my homework/essays/study/research" tweets on herpaderpedia is incredibly depressing. Some of it looks to be from college/uni level people ffs! viz:

"DannyMaxwell Daniel
by herpderpedia
If Wikipedia is gone forever I'm dropping Research writing."

PROBABLY A WISE MOVE DOUCHE.

thanks to denial, I'm immortal! (Trayce), Thursday, 19 January 2012 08:26 (fourteen years ago)

I simply disabled the stylesheet (Shift+G in Opera) and voilà, there's my article. >20 btw.

Bad amateur psychologist time. Does it look like these results fit into explainable categories to anyone else or shouldn't I be surfing after a 4:12 am toilet visit?

Easily remembered numbers = 0 to 11
No votes at all = 12 to 19
"Lots" = >20
