Is there a tactical advantage in going a man down

I merely ask because its been a long time since I've seen a top flight football match where the team with a man sent off loses. Often they reorganise and turn themselves into a much better outfit. cf Arsenal Cheslea at the weekend, Brazil England in the world cup....

This is almost like saying crime pays.

The accepted belief is that it is acceptable to go a man down if the foul prevents a clear goal scoring opportunity, as long as this occurs after the 23rd minute.

Don't ask how I know that.

...Manchester City v Everton on Saturday... Hello Mike.

Or more importantly - is there a tactical advantage in a man going down? ooooohhh errrrrrrrrr!

gazza, Thursday, 5 September 2002 08:06 (twenty-three years ago)

psychological advantage rather than tactical surely

Not necessarily Bob: a team reduced to ten might well reorganise into what we hear called "two banks of four", effectively two defensive lines one in front of the other, plus a single forward operating alone. This is notoriously difficult to break down, meaning (if the teams were on level terms at the time of the sending-off) the 10 may well not lose the game.

I was about to say "Of course there is!!!" and then I realized the subject header did NOT say, "Is there a tactical advantage in a man going down".

That's what I thought too, Dan. And I'm in complete agreement.

If there were an advantage to playing with ten men would this not have been spotted? I wonder if anyone has done a statistical analysis, either simply of scoring when one team has fewer players on the pitch, or comparing that to the scoring in those games before any sending off. And if playing with one fewer is better (and I don't believe it is), wouldn't 2 sendings off be better still? Therefore, logically, sending no players at all out to compete guarantees victory. Hurrah!

I, too thought this was a much more interesting topic.

Catching sight of interesting topics in the split-second after you've hit the back button: Classic or Dud?

if you are going a man down cz the man in question is going down, this cd surely be turned to tacical advantage? depending on his object of attention obv

Famous Ruud Hullit quote when Cheslea got beat by a nine man team:
"It is always hard to beat a team with ten men. So inagine how hard it is when they are down to nine."

Pete (Pete), Thursday, 5 September 2002 11:01 (twenty-three years ago)

but tim what's to stop said team implementing 2banks of 4 type tactic with 11 men? my point being there is no tactic you can do with 10 men that you can't do with 11. your "advantage" ie that the team is harder to break down is based on their giving up any intentions to win the game: psychological. but you can still stifle a game better with 11 men if that's what you wanted to do.

success of 10 men i maintain is based on focusing of minds, awareness of underdog status etc.

bob zemko (bob), Thursday, 5 September 2002 17:21 (twenty-three years ago)

also if a change to a counterattacking style pays more dividends then it's the coach's fault for not spotting that before the sending off. it doesn't work any better with 10.

bob zemko (bob), Thursday, 5 September 2002 17:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Depends on the man. If, for instance, the man in question is Mauricio Tarricco, you should try to get him sent off by the 2nd minute at the latest.

poor poor Tano, his own-goal was delicious last week.

are you part of the Steffen Freund fanclub PF?

chris (chris), Friday, 6 September 2002 09:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, I don't think he should be sent off as early in the game as Tarricco, that's for sure.

the pinefox, Friday, 6 September 2002 09:13 (twenty-three years ago)

it's just that he seems to get a very-bad press except for from Spurs fans who seem to think he's a vital part of the team. My flatmate and Jonnie for example think he's definitely needed for a good spurs team. Redknapp's arrival may change this over time though I think.

chris (chris), Friday, 6 September 2002 09:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Freund is OK. How valuable his 'solidity' really is is uncertain. We have often lost heavily with him in the team, after all. I think we should have signed Matt Holland ages ago. £4 million bargain!!

Has anyone ever tried to play CM with a ten-men-only rule? It's crazy hard, I couldn't even do it on CM2.

Gravel Puzzleworth, Saturday, 9 October 2010 22:01 (fifteen years ago)

never tried

unless picking jenas etc etc
