googling ILX tells me that a lot of ya'll who've seen it were disappointed by the ending
I kinda am too, but I'm wondering if the reveal/explanation makes up for it

yaycertain episodes: unbeatable.

I'm obsessed with finding the song that plays in the final episode when he beats up the dreamworld with the bat
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paranoia_Agent_Original_Soundtrack
Another track by Susumu Hirasawa was featured in the last episode of the Paranoia Agent series, but was never released on both the original version of the soundtrack and the one released in the United States. The track known as "Kingdom" was featured in Paranoia Agent and is part of the albums Sim City and Switched-on Lotus. It was slightly edited as to remove the vocals.
afaict, neither version is the one used in the episode ;^(

there has to be some anime nerddom forum out there with the correct version aggggggghhhhh
― I am that young sis, the beacon, a yardstick (dayo), Friday, 20 January 2012 03:41 (fourteen years ago)
I did sample a handful of other anime picks, based on recommendations-- I'm not a connoisseur but I love Satoshi Kon--And in retrospect I thought the ending of Paranoia Agent seemed out of place with the rest of the series but somewhat in keeping with other anime trends? Capital in ruins, thousands dead etc.

I'll see about that S Hirasawa track, hmm. That guy is wild

yeah I think most people have a problem with the ending because of that reason, very standard anime akira type ending. but otoh, very philip k. dick - it's straight out of flow my tears the policeman said, the idea that reality can be shaped by one person's mind.
― I am that young sis, the beacon, a yardstick (dayo), Friday, 20 January 2012 03:46 (fourteen years ago)
I'm disappointed that the idea of shounen bat [lil slugger] as being a manifestation of a person's id or subconscious, maybe as some kind of defense mechanism, was dropped in favor of supernatural girl but oh well
this is seriously the best show ever
― tanuki, Friday, 20 January 2012 03:49 (fourteen years ago)
it's real hot and cold but the hot is hot
― houses of the holey (Ówen P.), Friday, 20 January 2012 03:54 (fourteen years ago)
the "family planning" episode is probably the best episode of anything i've ever seen
― houses of the holey (Ówen P.), Friday, 20 January 2012 03:55 (fourteen years ago)
i dont think its that inconsistent tbh but it does flatten out
― Lamp, Friday, 20 January 2012 03:55 (fourteen years ago)
I was p disappointed when they started showing shounen bat as a big monster in the second to last episode, seemed to break the rule of 'never show the monster'
― I am that young sis, the beacon, a yardstick (dayo), Friday, 20 January 2012 11:48 (fourteen years ago)
it was cool how ugly they made some of the characters, like the corrupt police chief, and the gossip magazine writer dude
― I am that young sis, the beacon, a yardstick (dayo), Friday, 20 January 2012 12:01 (fourteen years ago)
prob need to watch more Real Talk anime
I should get back to this - I saw the first episode, and the fact that the plot was "young girl is assaulted, everyone tries to convince her it didn't happen" creeped me the fuck out. Which I know is part of the intended effect!

it sounds like some kind of remix of "Kingdom" from Switched-on Lotus, like just an extended version of one of the instrumental sections
this is something SH would do a lot; for Millenium Actress most of the tunes were just "stripped down" versions of stuff from his last album, which worked because the stuff was so densely layered.
― frogbs, Friday, 20 January 2012 13:49 (fourteen years ago)
that's cool but plz put it on the OST :(
― I am that young sis, the beacon, a yardstick (dayo), Friday, 20 January 2012 16:54 (fourteen years ago)
do you have the "paranoia agent outtakes" collection? i've never heard it but maybe it's on there. either way I haven't heard the switched-on version more than once or twice but i'm still pretty sure it's just a looped instrumental section from there and may not exist anywhere
― frogbs, Friday, 20 January 2012 16:58 (fourteen years ago)
really liked how this show's episode structure was built, moving from one character connection to another. it's been awhile since i watched it but i particularly liked the early episodes where the cool kid has a meltdown and the next one where we see his tutor's secret life.
i could stand to watch this series again.

i just looped the opening theme from this for the 5th time in a row, someone help me
― frogbs, Tuesday, 16 April 2013 21:51 (twelve years ago)
Listened to the main Paprika theme (by the same guy) several times over last night. Might start doing it again now...

I watched all of this many years ago and it moved me, I am planning on watching it all again very soon, maybe as soon as tomorrow, no later than next Tuesday

having played games like danganronpa and the zero time ___ series since then i feel like i need to come back to this, and fuck, it might be the best opening credits of any show ever. the music. the visuals teasing the entire run of the show. i'm going to make someone watch it with me. idk who yet, but someone.

Yeah I watched this for the first time quite recently, and you just kind of have to follow where it leads you. It gets a bit more patchy as it gets more digressional but I did love it. Definitely need to rewatch it soon. I thought the ending was good, very typical of Satoshi Kon and tbh I don't know how else you could end something like this. Agree the opening theme is brilliant too.
― WRONG TWELVE FUCK WITH (ultros ultros-ghali), Thursday, 22 June 2017 10:56 (eight years ago)
I'm amused that the opening theme is basically a really bombastic version of an old P-Model song

― Evan, Monday, 11 January 2021 02:37 (five years ago)
i cried!!!! at the maromi scene!!!!!!!!! dark goo shonen bat was an incredible visual as well i thought bc it also fully represented the physical absence of maromi consuming everything.... this is such a good show
i thought it was even great at its most digressive, the animation studio episode is hilarious, and i've never seen anything like the family planning episode in my life. even the gossip episode... they were all like great short stories taking place in the same world and advancing the overarching narrative by nudges, when that shit's done right i LOVE that shit

thought about it some more and think ending the show with an extinction level event resulting from people being unable to face the reality of their actions is maybe the best ending i've ever heard of
