Once because a bully told me to and I was afraid he would beat me up because I didn't.
Once because dude was making race jokes about my dead brother.
Haven't been in any type of physical altercation since I was... 15?

My brother was always the aggressor with me, but one time he pushed me too far and I splashed his nose all over his face with a sweet left hook. Twice he broke a knuckle swinging for my face and hitting my skull instead.

Never beaten anyone up, tried but ended up getting beat up myself by about 4 or 5 guys. Think I've told the story on here before so I'll keep in brief, but I was at a bar with friends in college and saw a dude closed fist punch his girlfriend in the face hard enough to knock her over. Full of liquid courage I went after the guy, turned out the bar was his frat's "bar" and the bouncers were his brothers. So I got my ass handed to me as they "escorted" me out. Bullshit all around, tbh.

once in 4th grade i socked a kid and bloodied his nose. at the time i think i mistook his horseplay for aggression. looking back i realize he was really more rambunctious and socially awkward than bullying. i still feel pangs of guilt.
once in 11th grade a couple of my stoner friends and i were jumped by some redneck jocks because they thought we were flirting with their would-be girlfriends. which was probably true. not much damage to us physically, but it did tip off an stoner/hood/hippie vs. socs/jock/redneck (mostly cold) war that lasted for about 2 years in my hometown.

About two years ago I got into a couple of fights, one of which was justifiable (some guy I didn't know kicked in my drivers side door, presumably because I drive an ex-squad car), one of which I probably should have walked away from (bar manager waits for my friends to leave then invites me back in so he can shove me around a little, thinking I wouldn't fight back because he's "protected" or whatever). Nearly got my ass beat a couple months ago due to some Coast Guard guys yelling at my wife and telling her to go back to her country, but I'm glad that was stopped right away since I heard they put someone in the hospital later that night.

Yes, 7th grade girl fight at Alamo Village, Catholic school field trip. It is what got me "out of my shell". Prior to that I was shy and had a reputation for being mousey. No one messed with me after that.
I remember using that Fonzi move where you grab a person by their collar. I did that after I called her a bitchslut. Then pushed her on the ground, got on top, started slapping her face then formed fists. Had to be pulled off. I have never again been so enraged and out for blood. Reason for the fight, we both shared the same ride up there and all through the trip she had been calling me stupid under her breath and whispering to other girls, looking at me and laughing. Had to spend an entire week listening to the religion teacher read passages by St Theresa of Avila and answer essay questions for a week after school.
Didn't have another girl fight until I was 25 with my ex-roommate. Similar strategy, but I got a fractured nose and the cops showed up.

Slapped a girl who was one of a group of girls who were surrounding me at a water fountain at school. The police were called but they refused to arrest me (they knew about my problems with some of the local kids, which included harassing phone calls and kidnapped pets). I was kicked out of school (they provided a tutor) for about a year, and was only let back in on a part-time basis for the last few months before we moved to Iowa.

Never been in a all out fight. When I was a kid I had aggression issues-one word usually sent me flailing at someone who would punch me in the stomach and knock the wind out of me. I once took a flying leap at a friend who beat me for a td pass in street football and knocked him over til he scraped up his knee bad. I felt bad instantly tho and helped him out.
Only real ass beat I handed out was at age 15- this kid was watching me play basketball and heckling and insulting me throughout, so I went and slammed his head into the sidewalk three times until he cried. That was really my last altercation as violence just kinda felt ugly to me in high school. If I saw them break out at school I felt queasy and plus I was small and couldn't really hang with some of the bigger dudes in a fight.
Kinda wish I would have been in at least one, not cuz im interested in machismo displays of manhood, but because there are good lessons learned from getting one's ass beat and I live in a seedier part of town now.

In middle school there was this kid that wouldn't leave me alone for a week or so and rode the bus with me. One day on the way home from school he kept saying stuff about my mom so I took my lunchbox and beat him on the head with it a few times. I got like a day's in-school detention but mom and dad didn't punish me at all cos I was a pretty good kid, straight A's and all that. The day after detention someone in the class asked me why I was gone and I told them and got a big applause from the whole class. I guess the kid was a general nuisance who had it coming to him.

i don't know why i never got into fights. i have the slightest suspicion i'm blocking something out. i would go a little crazy when i got made fun of in elementary school, and i think the kids would consider beating me up, then just decide no, too weird, not worth it.
abbott, the guy you beat up sounds ok. that reminds me of this church situation that happened in the singles ward i went to sporadically before i stopped going to church altogether. i saw this guy during testimony meeting sitting a row or two ahead of me. he was my elementary school nemesis. something pissed me off, it was probably all in my head. so after the meeting's over and everyone gets up to leave, i yell "FUCK you, FUCK you," at his FACE, or something else involving the word "fuck," i can't remember, everyone looks at me and i kind of scurry off, haha. next week i apologized to him, kind of pathetically iirc. thank you for your time!

I got in a couple of fights when I was a kid, but nothing that serious. My cousin is six months older than me and lived across the street so we would get into a pretty major battle like once a year, and whoever happened to be bigger would always win. Last time was when I was 15, when we took a couple swings at each other but both realized it was futile.
I've always been terrified of getting in a fight though - I'm a relatively large person who tends to look mean (but not so large that people automatically think that I'd kick their ass), so I've frequently had dudes at bars look at me and try to start shit when in fact I am a huge wimp and have no desire to fight anyone.
― joygoat, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 04:49 (fourteen years ago)
I got harassed/bullied a lot in school and even forty years down the line I still remember each time very vividly. Curse of the near-photographic memory? It didn't help that I was a couple of grades ahead, wore glasses (started wearing them when I was four), and was about as athletic as a wet paper bag. One time in third grade I actually did get the shit kicked out of me by a fourth grader (seriously, I got kicked in the stomach so hard that I, um, vacated myself). It was all pretty bad and I had a rep as someone who was a pushover.
In junior high, there was one stretch of my walk home that I couldn't work around - it was the walk across the big soccer field to a set of stairs that led down to the top of the street. The jock/skater/surfer crowd would hang out on the stairs after school and it was always a gauntlet to walk past these guys. One day I was getting shoved around by a couple of the kids and I just opened up with a punch at whoever was the closest. I would like to say that I was inspired by Clint Eastwood, James Bond, and Captain Kirk and calmly defended myself but really I was just angrily throwing blind. Anyway, this guy gasped "fuck..." and then dropped to the ground doubled-over. His friends started chasing me and I just ran the hell out of there. The next day there was no Three O'Clock High-resolution... bullying was now the "we were just having fun, you psycho" tease all the time and that really didn't end until I lived with my dad (and eventually went to high school in a different city)
The fucked up thing about this was that I felt horrible and tremendously guilty for punching the guy. Still kinda do actually.

ah this bringing up so many bad memories. i think we're all apt to remember middle-school persecution because it is laden with such intense emotion and because it occurs at a formative moment. i can recreate entire episodes in my mind even now, 20+ years later.

and the anger doesn't quite go away, either. i still wish awful things on the people that bullied me.
one of them actually died a few years after i moved away -- he apparently got into a fight with the wrong people and was beat to death. i actually can't remember him too well anymore, let alone what he did to deserve my everlasting hatred, but i remember hearing of his death and (to my shame) feeling vaguely satisfied, in addition to horrified (if that's possible).
― flesh, the devil, and a wolf (wolf) (amateurist), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 08:30 (fourteen years ago)
Never thrown a punch in anger, or had one thrown at me. One potentially epic fight happened between schools when I was about 15 (I went to the school in the town next to the town I lived in; weird rival factions teenage bullshit), but I played football and had been to primary school with a 'mover' in the rival school and he told one potential torublemaker to leave me alone (it was a bit "these aren't the droids you're looking for"). A few of my mates got punched or did some punching that night, but not me. I can remember a couple of punch-ups between people in our circle of friends but nothing all that serious. Any bullying I suffered was social / psychological rather than physical, and it's not left any lasting memories particularly. Guess I'm lucky.

I got hit in the face once and that was p much it
only predetermined one-on-one non-sibling fight I can recall from childhood was with my best friend for some reason, aged like 12, and we both attempted to use moves we'd seen on WWF which probably sums up our respective ability to fight
― Saltines of Pink - 'Whites Me Tumblr?' (DJ Mencap), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 10:27 (fourteen years ago)
I don't think I've ever "beaten someone up" as such, had lots of fights when I was a kid but mostly not that serious. I had a really violent temper and was also picked on quite a lot so that would often end up getting physical but usually got broken up before anything too bad happened. I guess I did give a kid who stole from me a bit of a battering but "not the face" if that counts for anything.
As an adult I've been in approx 4 physical fights which have all been down to drunken confrontations. The last 2 were on the same night, which was pretty good going, but I'm not sure if those count cos I didn't throw a punch, the first one I was just protesting my innocence while the landlord of a pub laid into me for a bit, then a beggar started hassling us while I was still shaken up from that, I told him to fuck off and he hit me. That was about 10 years ago.
― The Eyeball Of Hull (Colonel Poo), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 11:05 (fourteen years ago)
Aside from getting hit, chased across various parks and one railway line, which seemed to be an accepted consequence of attending football matches in the 1980's, I've only been in one proper fight as an adult.
My mouthy friend got into it with a group of 4 guys at closing time outside a pub. He got into my car and as I pulled away one of the guys started kicking the passenger side door. I stopped and got out, at which point they backed off a few yards. I then opened the boot of my car, grabbed my pitching wedge and kinda charged them. They scattered and I smashed the rear lights of their car. One of them spat at me so I punched him on the side of the head (fuckin hurt my hand tbh) whilst still holding the golf club in my other hand which did seem to deter any of them from fighting back. Completely cowardly tactics on my part but no-one fucks with my ride.

I was shaking so bad afterwards tbh. Partly because I realised I could've quite easily has my ass handed to me, but more from the thought that one of them might have fought back and I may have done something monumentally stupid. The idea that I could have swung a fucking golf club at someone was a bit horrifying to me in retrospect.
― pandemic, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 11:22 (fourteen years ago)
Crikey, good man (and good thinking, weaponing up). Can't entirely condone it, but hey.
Some silly stuff at school - basically one guy who was convinced that I was bullying him, not without reason tbf, took me on a couple of times when egged on by his bigger pals (i.e. some guys who wanted to see a fight). Just pushing and a bit of wrestling, because I had in mind that if I didn't throw any punches then I couldn't get into trouble. No harm done.
Then, ridiculously, a couple of times I've been happily drunk in a nightclub and passed by guys who're being thrown out by bouncers and have grabbed me on theirway past in a futile attempt to avoid ejection, which for some reason I've taken as carte blanche to punch them. Bewilderingly, the bouncers seem to have been okay with this. Now that's cowardly.
Most recent nearly-fight was stupidest of all. Last winter during the prolonged icy spell, I'm in a crowd inching our way across one of Glasgow's main shopping streets (literally a wet sheet of ice at the time). A car comes roaring up far too fast and makes an unindicated left turn, very nearly mowing down me and a couple of others. I'm on my phone and absent-mindedly bang on the car as it passes. Does the guy not stop, abandon his car in the road and come racing after me, shouting. I duck into an off-licence, still on the phone, to avoid him, and get a volley of abuse for cowardice.
I'd've been cowardly anyway, like, but I was actually walking between a funeral and the wake at the time, which made the whole thing less scary and more utterly absurd.
― Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 11:54 (fourteen years ago)
i could have gotten into a fistfight with a pensioner a month ago but i didn't get out of the car to him, just nodded and winked and grinned as he abused me and the likes of me and the cut of me and the bloody cheek of me

When I was in sixth grade, I was definitely the weakest and dorkiest member of my crew and I got in a fight with the weakest dorkiest member of another clique. I think we were set up. The idea could have been "Doug and Christian need to learn how to fight" but it was probably more like "wouldn't it be funny if Doug and Christian fought each other?"
Anyway, one of Christian's friends had him throw a water balloon at me and all my friends were like "you have to go up there and punch him for that!" So I all went up there like "I want to fight you" and we all agreed to move it to the playground out in the woods so no one's parents would see.
We fought for a good twenty minutes and at one point he was doing a number on me. Our friends were kind enough to give us "Rounds" where they'd break us up and take us into our corners. My best friend Mikey was like "okay, to get this guy, you have to pretend that he killed your dog." So I jumped up and charged at Christian yelling "YOU KILLED ROXY!" which caught him off guard enough that I was really able to really lay into him.
He seemed to be on the ground for good and so I turned around and started walking back to my buddies when Christian sprung up from the ground, ran up to me, and gave me a solid kick in the balls from behind. I collapsed in tears, then hopped on my Diamondback and rode home.
A week later on the bus, my friend Brian was like "Christian wants a rematch". I didn't quite realize that as the winner, Christian wouldn't have any reason to want a rematch and this was all Brian just setting us up. So I agreed.
And after school, instead of just 5 guys watching from the sidelines, it was like every middle-school kid in my neighborhood. And when I called for a round break, I was greeted with laughter. And eventually, some of the eighth graders just picked Christian up and started hitting me with him. I hobbled home, this time with some pretty serious bruises.
I have never beaten anyone up.

Worst was a fight with an Iowa City cop who came up behind me and tried to tackle me without identifying himself.. I busted his face apart and faced felony charges (and a few nights in the can), luckily i ended up pleading out to a misdemeanor. This right after a fight in a bar where a buddy of mine and I pummeled a bouncer for pushing my brother's girlfriend-the cop was trying to take us in for that.

I've never beaten anyone up nor been beaten up, but I have hit a lot of people and won the 2 fights I've been in (both too girly to involve actual beating.)
'Hit a lot of people' makes me sound like a wierdo, eh. The thing is I am a weed and shy and all but I have a really quick trigger. If I feel threatened or someone is threatening a mate or whatevs I get the red mist and lash out. This surprises everyone, luckily nobody has reacted by killing me.
I got a rep in 6th form for knocking a guy out in a hotel bar on a school trip to Russia. He was harassing a friend of mine, who was very short. He was very big and intimidating, and I clocked what was happening and just reached across her head with an uppercut. I think the vodka did more to bring him down than my tiddly arm-power tbh.

Then, ridiculously, a couple of times I've been happily drunk in a nightclub and passed by guys who're being thrown out by bouncers and have grabbed me on theirway past in a futile attempt to avoid ejection, which for some reason I've taken as carte blanche to punch them. Bewilderingly, the bouncers seem to have been okay with this
I'm a bad person for cracking up at this, right

No. Have only hit ppl in the face when we've both been wearing boxing gloves.
Very satifactorily shoved a nemesis flat into some shrubs in the fourth grade.

I had the same problems as Tera...too "sensitive". A few junior high "fights" fixed that. All of a sudden I was ms. dontfuckwithme. I regret it but the "fights" did not involve punching or anything severe.

What about when "fighting" is institutionally supported? I know one teacher who used to berate kids for not defending themselves! Like, if someone hit or punched you and did nothing, you were punished!
At another school I attended, a nun grabbed me by the neck and squeezed it so hard it hurt! Nothing is more discouraging than institutionally tolerated and encouraged violence. By "religious" people no less!
I grew up in a house where nonviolence was openly preached and embraced. However my mom told me it was morally acceptable to defend yourself. Funny how some people have a problem with that : when an institution demands that you "turn the other cheek" it is disturbing!

― teaky frigger (darraghmac), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 16:24 (fourteen years ago)
I was nun-taught in the alleged post-battering era, but I saw one particularly ancient and ornery one haul off and slap a jaunty kid's arm on his way to the communion rail: "Fold your hands, you Protestant!"
― Dr Morbois de Bologne (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 16:28 (fourteen years ago)
one of the teachings in my house growing up was - never let anyone put there hands on you. Ever.was a bit stumped for a response when I was 11 and a teacher grabbed me by my afro and shook my head around. On the one hand this was clearly reason enough to throw down, on the other it's a teacher. I ended up not doing anything.
― pandemic, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 16:29 (fourteen years ago)
heh i thnk 'post-battering' era in the states came a little earlier than over here morbs, i'd my knuckles opened with a steel ruler when i was 6 for topping a pencil both ends but tbf i was clearly acting against the spirit of Vatican II there
― teaky frigger (darraghmac), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 16:37 (fourteen years ago)
lol ireland, but post-nuns if any teacher ever 'put a hand on us' the auld fella would be in for a choice word/threat, but he'd never have thought of calling a sister on that kind of thing.

nuns are horrifying.
― zverotic discourse (jim in glasgow), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 16:40 (fourteen years ago)
There were only a handful of nuns at my school, most of them were nonviolent and even liberal. You know how it is with these religious orders, some people are in there and, you know, they don't belong there. Institutionally it is terrifying!

Also teachers engaging in racial abuse is despicable. I witnessed one substitute teacher do this in grade school, to the kids' eternal credit they rightly saw this as racist.

There were a bunch of racist teachers at my school. They were starting to frown upon the physical beatings by that time though, I got a teacher in trouble for bopping me on the head when I was 14. Tbh I only reported it to get out of detention. Wish I'd reported the guy who threw me on the floor and shook me while screaming "you violent little shit" at me because I hit some kid in PE who fouled me. That guy was actually a psycho who deserved to be fired. He was always doing shit like that, throttling people Homer-style for not doing their homework etc. Lol public school I guess.

Like I said we had one substitute teacher do the thing of "is the black kid dumb, is the black kid stealing". And then, of course, staring at them during the civil rights or diversity portion of class. I consider this abuse whether it is physical or not.
This was at an urban school, majority white but with some diversity. It didn't go over too well.

I was teased a lot in school because I stuttered. One time in the sixth grade, a kid came up from behind me as I was taking my books from my locker and just ployed into me. I never had a chance to do anything. One group of boys who were brothers used to shove me around and mock me a lot. Their parents owned the feed store in town and they sort of did what ever they wanted to. Eventually I had enough and when one of them came up from behind me and started with his Jajajajaacob I swung at him with my lock in my hand and hit him square in the nose. He was a tall massive kid who played football and I was a skinny kid who played nothing. I ended up breaking his nose. I figured this would end it, but it only got worse. I was expelled from school and moved to Austin where I completed high school. I recently learned the same guy is serving time in prison for having to many DUIs and for beating up his wife.

I had terrible luck with nuns. Once a schoolmate pulled my hair so I pulled hers just as the nun looked our way. I got in trouble and had to go to the front of the class and let the schoolmate pull my hair again. Everyone laughed at me, I teared up. When I think of all the other humiliations through elementary and middle school, it is no wonder I finally snapped.

fuckin hell jacob, expelled?
― teaky frigger (darraghmac), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 17:40 (fourteen years ago)
Oh yeah, I got pulled into principal's office one time with the "don't offend so and so because of his / her parents" schtick too.
My favorite is when the teachers / administrators have no principles at all when it comes to violence, threats or abusive language....and the kids get punished for protesting that they have "rights".
Way to produce a generation of successful, optimistic capitalists!
