Hahaha [huge list]

SOLID!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 5 September 2002 14:09 (twenty-two years ago)

WHAT?

You list SClub7 but no Reach For The Stars?

Are you on crack? Or just wrong.

ogden, Thursday, 5 September 2002 14:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Nyaar... thanks to that list I have found that if I had been born two weeks earlier then Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick would've been Number 1 on the day I was born.

As it is I get Heart of Cockmunching Glass.

Yeah, 1996 = classic. I must get around to my idea of doing a C90Go for the The Best ... Album In The World! tape from then (which I certainly percieved at the time as doing what it said on the tin).

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 5 September 2002 14:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Ha ha - here's a fun game: predict what day the 1,000th perfect "song" will be released. I say January 19th 2004.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 5 September 2002 17:42 (twenty-two years ago)

S'funny, this morning, for some inexplicable reason, I had Aneka's 'Japanese Boy' going around in my head. Didn't know it got to No.1 though. Ooh.

DavidM (DavidM), Thursday, 5 September 2002 17:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Crikey, B*witched had 4 number one's and I can't remember any of them.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Thursday, 5 September 2002 18:15 (twenty-two years ago)

David Soul? From Starsky and Hutch? Good heavens.

lawrence kansas, Thursday, 5 September 2002 18:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Jel is wrong... THIS is surely the greatest little run of British Number 1 singles EVAH!

641 Sinead O'Connor Nothing Compares To You 3/2/1990

643 Snap The Power 31/3/1990

tom is yay.

Steady on, Jel! Pump Up The Volume is pretty great. Millions of people's first exposure to scratching.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 6 September 2002 07:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Now the obvious question here is - how many of these tunes do ILM posters own? heh heh

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 6 September 2002 07:45 (twenty-two years ago)

And of course there ought to be a number 406a - "God Save The Queen" by the Sex Pistols, kept off the #1 spot in Jubilee week for political reasons, even though it was outselling Rod the Mod by an estimated two-to-one.

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 6 September 2002 07:56 (twenty-two years ago)

sorry that should be 405a.

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 6 September 2002 07:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Some better runs :

171 Roy Orbison It's Over 25/6/1964
172 Animals The House Of The Rising Sun 9/7/1964
173 Rolling Stones It's All Over now 16/7/1964
174 Beatles A Hard Day's Night 23/7/1964
175 Manfred Mann Do Wah Diddy Diddy 13/8/1964
176 Honeycombes Have I The Right 27/8/1964

181 Supremes Baby Love 19/11/1964
182 Rolling Stones Little Red Rooster 3/12/1964
183 Beatles I Feel Fine 10/12/1964

Attempts to get as long a run in the early 70's are stymied by nonsense like The Simon Park Arkestra, Dawn and The New Seekers (all of which I quite like actually.) But here's a nice mini-run :

293 Jimi Hendrix Voodoo Chile 21/11/1970
294 Dave Edmunds I Hear You Knockin' 28/11/1970
295 Clive Dunn Grandad 9/1/1971
296 George Harrison My Sweet Lord 30/1/1971
297 Mungo Jerry Baby Jump 6/3/1971
298 T Rex Hot Love 20/3/1971
299 Dave & Ansil Collins Double Barrel 1/5/1971

Before you ask - 'Grandad' is fantastic!

THIS is great from 1974 (Although Ray fucking Stevens was next!):

343 Mud Tiger Feet 26/1/1974
344 Suzi Quatro Devil Gate Drive 23/2/1974
345 Alvin Stardust Jealous Mind 9/3/1974
346 Paper Lace Billy Don't Be A Hero 16/3/1974
347 Terry Jacks Seasons In The Sun 6/4/1974
348 Abba Waterloo 4/5/1974
349 Rubettes Sugar Baby Love 18/5/1974

The best of the lot BY FAR WOULD HAVE BEEN THIS IF IT WASN'T FOR
JOHN BASTARDING DENVER :

353 George McCrae Rock Your Baby 27/7/1974
354 Three Degrees When Will I See You Again 17/8/1974
355 Osmonds Love Me For A Reason 31/8/1974

711 Take That Sure 15/10/1994

Now that is a run.

Mr Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 6 September 2002 08:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Someone pointed out to me that the title track of 'Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space' by Spiritualized sounds just like 'Grandad' by Clive Dunn.

I like this little cluster:

273 Thunderclap Newman Something In The Air 2/7/1969
274 Rolling Stones Honky Tonk Women 23/7/1969
275 Zager & Evans In The Year 2525 30/8/1969

Now this is a run...

494 Kraftwerk The Model 6/2/1982

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Friday, 6 September 2002 08:40 (twenty-two years ago)

This didn't get to number 1, but can you work out what it is WITHOUT looking at the filename...

http://www.the-tool.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/whodogs.jpg

Alan (Alan), Friday, 6 September 2002 08:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I agree with Andrew L, although I would have started the run at #264. 1969 was a helluva year for No.1s (er, let's gloss over Peter Sarstedt). Dr.C makes mostly good points too. I started to count how many of these I have but got bored. The oldest I have in proper 7" vinyl format however is #98.

Jeff Worrell (Jeff W), Friday, 6 September 2002 08:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I love the post-Christmas lull. What's at number one - Iron Maiden? Steve 'Silk' Hurley? Chef from South Park? Offspring? Fatboy Slim? White Town? It must be January.

Mike (mratford), Friday, 6 September 2002 20:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Mambo 5 is probably the worst thing on that list. I cant resist fucking early Westlife and Ronan Keating

vic (vicc13), Friday, 6 September 2002 20:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I cant resist fucking early Westlife and Ronan Keating

I don't know where to start with this!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 6 September 2002 23:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I have 216 of these (that's counting without checking, so unlikely to be precise). My peak is in the '70s, where I have about a third of those listed.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 7 September 2002 15:36 (twenty-two years ago)

505 Irene Cara Fame 17/7/1982
506 Dexy's Midnight Runners Come On Eileen 7/8/1982
507 Survivor Eye Of The Tiger 4/9/1982
508 Musical Youth Pass The Dutchie 2/10/1982
509 Culture Club Do You Really Want To Hurt Me 23/10/1982
510 Eddy Grant I Don't Wanna Dance 13/11/1982
511 Jam Beat Surrender 4/12/1982
512 Renee & Renato Save Your Love 18/12/1982
513 Phil Collins You Can't Hurry Love 15/1/1983
514 Men At Work Down Under 29/1/1983
515 Kajagoogoo Too Shy 19/2/1983

518 Duran Duran Is There Something I Should Know 26/3/1983
519 David Bowie Let's Dance 9/4/1983

There was a period, when I was 9 that I realised I knew this list in order off by heart.

The Model b/w Computer Love was the first single I ever bought. People always say 'ooh - you're so cool' but hey, it was No.1. There must have been a fair few other 8 year olds buying it.

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 7 September 2002 15:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know why, but I find "Baby Jane" by Rod Stewart an irresistable song--so disgusting and synthy and the vocals are so over the top--the lyrics as well! That one was from his "Body Wishes" album--it had the worst cover ever--a rip-off of that Elvis Presley cover where both sides of the sleeve are covered in little Rods in pink outfits. Jeezis.

Ashley Andel, Saturday, 7 September 2002 16:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Where is the Macarena? Man, it must be boring in England.

why 'perfect'?? does getting to number one make a song perfect?? odd choice of word for the title of the thread that's all!?

paul relton, Sunday, 28 December 2003 05:50 (twenty-one years ago)

sarcasm to an extent

i called 1981-1984 'the golden age of pop' in the pub last week

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 28 December 2003 13:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I think it's Tom's "oh, its popular, therefor it must be good, its number one, so it must be perfect" schtick again.

Johnney B (Johnney B), Sunday, 28 December 2003 14:09 (twenty-one years ago)

no i think he just put perfect to attract people to the thread and get them thinking about how logic would dictate number one songs to be perfect songs yet so many of them are not. is 'mr blobby' a perfect song? for what it is, actually, maybe yes it is...

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 28 December 2003 14:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Hadn't there been a slew of threads, perhaps more on ILM than ILE, called 'There Are Only [X] Perfect Songs' in which people listed their favourite records?

O Sweet Suffering Jesus, you people are insane! Hahaha

i reckon Ewing will give HALF of those songs more than 6 out of 10 actually

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 28 December 2003 18:25 (twenty-one years ago)

i thought tom ws raising a serious point in a jokey way: how do we determine perfect; ok maybe subjectivity ain't too useful a tool for that but HEY we already have an adequate 'objective' tool fr such measurements: sales! why not? or that's how i took it.

cozen¡ (Cozen), Sunday, 28 December 2003 18:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Apparently this was originally going to be released on Creation records, as they had the option of licensing it but turned it down. Who knows, it may have kept them going.
