Lion King fuiud.

SOPA/PILLA (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Friday, 27 January 2012 20:18 (fourteen years ago)

Lion King the best film in the classic mold on the list, New Groove is my favorite of all of these as a grown-up. The story of that movie is apparently pretty hilarious, the script used to have a full complement of songs and everything.

tinker tailor soldier sb (silby), Friday, 27 January 2012 20:21 (fourteen years ago)

first three are spot perfect but lion king
it really is the best animated movie ever. so fucking shocking, both when i was a kid and didnt understand morality and death and now when i think im getting a handle on it and then see mustafa intentionally trampled to death.

Aesop Rizzle (a hoy hoy), Friday, 27 January 2012 20:22 (fourteen years ago)

Mulan definitely outclasses Hercules and Tarzan and Pocahontas, not quite as classic as Beauty/Aladdin/Lion King.

tinker tailor soldier sb (silby), Friday, 27 January 2012 20:23 (fourteen years ago)

duuuuude I just wondered why don't any of the herbivorous megafauna talk

tinker tailor soldier sb (silby), Friday, 27 January 2012 20:24 (fourteen years ago)

because they are the plebeians of the Savannah and TLK was about royalty.

Frobisher (Viceroy), Friday, 27 January 2012 20:28 (fourteen years ago)

Aladdin.

Inevitable stupid samba mix (chap), Friday, 27 January 2012 20:49 (fourteen years ago)

fuck it, i'm voting TENG

Number None, Friday, 27 January 2012 20:55 (fourteen years ago)

watched Pocahantas recently actually. weird movie. thankfully not marred by shitty Phil Collins/Billy Joel/whoever the fuck songwriting like some of these other ones

Full Frontal Newtity (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 27 January 2012 20:58 (fourteen years ago)

'aladdin' was awesome at the time but i suspect its arsenio hall jokes and abject racism haven't held up well.

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Friday, 27 January 2012 21:01 (fourteen years ago)

Dinosaur tho. What was that about?

Number None, Friday, 27 January 2012 21:03 (fourteen years ago)

Fantasia 2000 (2000)
The Emperor's New Groove (2000)

These are the only two acceptable options.

dead-trius (Eric H.), Friday, 27 January 2012 21:04 (fourteen years ago)

Disney's creative flailings at the turn of the century are pretty interesting. They really were throwing everything at the wall

Number None, Friday, 27 January 2012 21:07 (fourteen years ago)

Fantasia 2000

?! this movie is an abomination

Full Frontal Newtity (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 27 January 2012 21:08 (fourteen years ago)

a fucking NOAH'S ARK SEQUENCE

Full Frontal Newtity (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 27 January 2012 21:08 (fourteen years ago)

Disney + Bible = wrong

Full Frontal Newtity (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 27 January 2012 21:09 (fourteen years ago)

Fantasia 2000 and Emperor's New Groove are as different as can be

Number None, Friday, 27 January 2012 21:09 (fourteen years ago)

kind of ridiculous that the disney of this era, prob their least ambitious/interesting era ever, would try to replicate/upgrade the single most ambitious and groundbreaking disney movie ever.

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Friday, 27 January 2012 21:10 (fourteen years ago)

like one is a funny, stylistically daring break with tradition and the other is a bloated monument to the memory of Walt

Number None, Friday, 27 January 2012 21:11 (fourteen years ago)

Rhapsody in Blue is the only segment of Fantasia 2K I have distinct memories of

tinker tailor soldier sb (silby), Friday, 27 January 2012 21:12 (fourteen years ago)

ahhh. can't choose between Lion King and Aladdin. Aladdin was always my favourite as a child, its so fun, and that counts for a lot. But then the Lion King is probably the better movie, but its a lot heavier than Aladdin..

kid steel (cajunsunday), Friday, 27 January 2012 21:16 (fourteen years ago)

Rhapsody in Blue is the only segment of Fantasia 2K I have distinct memories of

the only decent sequence in the movie, so consider yourself lucky

Full Frontal Newtity (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 27 January 2012 21:18 (fourteen years ago)

yeah sort of what I thought

feel like I should've put longer than a week on this poll oh well. pretty sure it's going to get more voters than my Abort/Retry/Fail? poll.

tinker tailor soldier sb (silby), Friday, 27 January 2012 21:19 (fourteen years ago)

Pocahontas isn't a great movie but it has amazing Alan Menken songs so I watch youtubes of it all the time.

Voted for another movie with Alan Menken soundtrack.

abcfsk, Friday, 27 January 2012 21:30 (fourteen years ago)

lion king definitely

would try to replicate/upgrade the single most ambitious and groundbreaking disney movie ever.

you cant possibly be referring to fantasia can you? because sleeping beauty fits the bill way more

Hungry4Ass, Friday, 27 January 2012 21:44 (fourteen years ago)

the original fantasia is highfalutin junk, they did it no particular disservice with 2k

Hungry4Ass, Friday, 27 January 2012 21:45 (fourteen years ago)

Sleeping Beauty is really beautiful but i just find it boring. Pinocchio is obviously Disney's greatest achievement.

Yeah, kind of the point of my pairing. Neither was of a piece with Disney's horrible, awful '90s shit.

beauty and the beast

surm, Friday, 27 January 2012 21:55 (fourteen years ago)

lion king was my fav when i was a kid cuz it was about a ~boy and his dad~ so it was cooler than all the eww princess movies. the funny thing is that they put their B-team on lion king and had the higher hopes for pocahontas, which was meant to have a big oscar push. aladdin might deserve the greatest share of blame for the celeb v/o trend, but i loved it too

Hungry4Ass, Friday, 27 January 2012 22:01 (fourteen years ago)

Well I remember the...disturbed looks on parents' faces when the count or whomever in The Huchback...sung a song to a raging fire to celebrate his lust for a girl.

Out of all have only seen maybe 20 mins of B&tB thx to 5-yo niece's serial viewing. (she also likes to sing the crows' song from Dumbo) No desire to see any others.

Literal Facepalms (Dr Morbius), Friday, 27 January 2012 22:08 (fourteen years ago)

which one "boasts" the Michael Bolton theme song

Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 27 January 2012 22:12 (fourteen years ago)

i went with my sisters to see the recent theater re-releases of lion king and beauty and the beast, and i gotta say they didn't quite hold up to childhood memory. we ended up fixating less on the charm & music & visuals and more on the various cringe-worthy social assumptions underlying the stories. also i had forgotten how lickety-split quick the love stories are set up, like you get one song/montage and that's it, true love forever.

so basically emperor's new groove wins for not having a love interest and for making the story about how rich ppl are jerks.

ban opinions (reddening), Friday, 27 January 2012 22:24 (fourteen years ago)

you cant possibly be referring to fantasia can you? because sleeping beauty fits the bill way more

the original 'fantasia' isn't perfect but it's probably among the 3-4 most mold-breaking animated features ever. 'sb' looks nice but is pretty conventional otherwise. they're definitely both way ahead of anything post-1967, in any way.

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Friday, 27 January 2012 22:28 (fourteen years ago)

But most Disney movies assume that rich people are jerks -- especially inherited wealth (e.g. Cinderella, Snow White, B&TB).

Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 27 January 2012 22:29 (fourteen years ago)

you might say that in Disney movies we first see the apotheosis of the Orange County arriviste who marries, turns Republican and joins the local chapter of Reagan for Prez.

Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 27 January 2012 22:30 (fourteen years ago)

hahaha Alfred OTM.

Frobisher (Viceroy), Friday, 27 January 2012 22:32 (fourteen years ago)

Reagan Democrats 4 Dumbo!

Frobisher (Viceroy), Friday, 27 January 2012 22:33 (fourteen years ago)

I wouldn't say Sleeping Beauty is conventional. There are no real protagonists. Not necessarily unconventional in a good way, but certainly interesting. A cold movie, not one you love.

abcfsk, Friday, 27 January 2012 22:37 (fourteen years ago)

It's an art movie

Number None, Friday, 27 January 2012 22:39 (fourteen years ago)

sorry, i dont buy it one bit! that's really an uncalled for level of hyperbole imo

they're definitely both way ahead of anything post-1967, in any way.

really REALLY dont buy this either! esp 'in any way'... thats just absurd!

Hungry4Ass, Friday, 27 January 2012 22:45 (fourteen years ago)

I never thought about how far more ambiguous everything in SB is compared to say, Snow White... not even the evil witch's/godmother's actions are specifically "evil" but more tied up with fate.

This thread makes me want to do some SRS and CRTCL viewings of Disney's backcatalog, most of which I haven't seen since before I was in formal operations.

Frobisher (Viceroy), Friday, 27 January 2012 22:46 (fourteen years ago)

Sleeping Beauty is pretty interesting. certainly on a formal level its close to the top in terms of execution and innovation.

Full Frontal Newtity (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 27 January 2012 22:50 (fourteen years ago)

Pinocchio combines formal elegance and entertainment tho

Number None, Friday, 27 January 2012 22:53 (fourteen years ago)

like Monstro alone is one the most impressive feats of animation ever

Number None, Friday, 27 January 2012 22:54 (fourteen years ago)

I have held off on showing Pinnochio to my daughter out of concern that it might freak her out/scare her. Monstro is pretty scary.

Full Frontal Newtity (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 27 January 2012 22:55 (fourteen years ago)

otoh she is cool with watching wolverines dismember a moose so I dunno

Full Frontal Newtity (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 27 January 2012 22:56 (fourteen years ago)

From my one viewing of Pinocchio, when I was prob. 7, IMO it combines terrifying nightmare imagery with crippling guilt inducement.

So, good work Shakes!

Frobisher (Viceroy), Friday, 27 January 2012 22:57 (fourteen years ago)

not a good movie but the bear in Fox and the Hound is absolutely terrifying.

we skipped that part of fantasia

Full Frontal Newtity (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 27 January 2012 23:01 (fourteen years ago)

I guess some critics (Kael?) found Fantasia 1940 to be the kitschification of Serious Music.

Literal Facepalms (Dr Morbius), Friday, 27 January 2012 23:02 (fourteen years ago)

shakey otm. theres different levels on which 'conventional' works here, and animation-wise & cinematically SB does a lot of interesting stuff (i dont think its a great movie mind you but as an achievement its remarkable), fantasia's primary innovation was its unsettling combination of grade-A kitsch with hoity toity stuff.

Hungry4Ass, Friday, 27 January 2012 23:04 (fourteen years ago)

XXXP Fox and the Hound is a totally good movie! I disagree! Its extremely sad and upsetting but also really beautiful and is a great story about the bonds of friendship and how much pain we bring on ourselves through our decisions to become close to others through friendship.

If I ever have kids though, my strategy is to wait till my kid (esp. if its a boy) is 13-14 before I make them sit down and watch it. I saw the whole thing for the first time when I was like in my mid-teens and it still devastated me. Like seriously it was the first movie I cried at.

So yeah I'd take my YA and say "oh you think you're jaded and shit? Lets just sit down and watch this fuckin' kiddie movie..." and then cue the waterworks and introspection abt. the importance and meaning of friendship.

I dunno I realize now that I am stanning for a movie that is typically relegated to B-list Disney but I guess it just had a v. big impact on me.

Frobisher (Viceroy), Friday, 27 January 2012 23:06 (fourteen years ago)

im not sure how else you could possibly view it, tbh! and that doesn't necessarily entail condemning the movie either...

Hungry4Ass, Friday, 27 January 2012 23:22 (fourteen years ago)

Oh yeah Night on Bald Mountain had like three frames of demon tits flying past the camera iirc.

tinker tailor soldier sb (silby), Friday, 27 January 2012 23:23 (fourteen years ago)

sorry, i dont buy it one bit! that's really an uncalled for level of hyperbole imo

what animated features do you consider more innovative? i can't think of many animated films, before or since, that open with a 15-20 minute stretch of abstract surrealism!

some of the segments are terrible (the beethoven one), but others ('rite of spring,' 'dance of the hours') don't seem kitschy at all to me.

tbh i can't think of a single disney film since WD's death that struck me as particularly innovative at all, tho some of them are decent.

BONUS TRIVIA: there was a point in the mid-'90s where my Dad learned about "collectors items" as an investment, and in keeping with his tradition of making the worst investments ever, my parents still have a box full of mint-in-mint-bag Burger King puppets of Hunchback of Notre Dame characters

came to vote for little mermaid (still watch this once/year!), but this has got to be one of the first three, huh? as someone who actually was a small child in the 90s these movies were obv v important to me

my kids like the fox and the hound, esp my daughter. that's as late as we go with our dvds disney-wise, thank god, although my wife took them to the recent lion king re-issue while i checked out drive.

voted Lion King, for being the first movie I remember crying at. He watched his dad die! And was made to believe it was his fault! That shit can really fuck up an 8yr old.
