The Toynbee Message Mystery

I hijacked an ILM thread with this but it more properly belongs here.

I have seen messages about Toynbee's alleged idea regarding reincarnating people on the planet Jupiter since I was in college, at least (back between 1983-1987). The ones I remember seeing then were small pieces of paper (say, 3" x 2") stuck on street lights. I'm sure most people would not have bothered to read them, but I tend to stop for anything strange I see posted on the street.

In the past several years the messages have gotten larger and have been getting some attention.

I think it's a very strange interpretation of the scene with the old man dying and then the embryo. (I haven't seen the movie for a long time, so I may not be getting this right.)

I should have read the article before posting the link, since I am now disappointed that apparently something is known about who started posting this stuff.

I think that the possibility that toneybee could be an AI trying to make its mark in the world without harming anyone in the process. Perhaps the top secret project was called JUPITER and IT MUST be reincarnated with new designers. JUST A THOUGHT! "NEMO" 9\93

I've been reading a bit about these the past few days, I'm still not sure what to make of it, except that I'm thoroughly intrigued.

(props to Cprek whose blog I pulled that link from, and which began my descent into the madness that is the Toynbee Tile Mystery)

Read that article too. It is sorta fascinating--especially the logistics. And shit. My brain doesn't work today, sorry, I'm going to have to abort this post.

It was kind of a fun little sci-fi mystery art project until anti-semitism was involved..

That's what they said about Nazism, too.

I thought this was going to be a Robin Carmody thread.

ten years pass...

There was enough sense spoken to suppose that the prime minister does not want war. He said several times that the Middle East conflict is an understandable root-cause of Arab anger that must be resolved - and resolved first, he implied. He called for a just peace for the Palestinians and an end to suicide bombings - but who was he calling upon? It was whistling in the wind unless he was calling on George Bush to take action there first.

Here stood a man trying to do what he can to avoid war.
