Dad died so I have been slowly giving away his liquor stash. I cry every time I find a good bottle of whiskey. He had some good stuff - he used to keep it around for gifts. I don't drink hard liquor.

Gave away an old bottle of Martini & Rossi + some champagne to my brother for Christmas...I sob thinking about it.

For some reason one of my stereotypes of ilxors is that they all have Pernod and cachaca in their cabinets.

Reading lists of what is in people's liquor cabinets is a weird experience. Liquor is so visual! Seeing the "wrong" item in someone's bar is a real downer (not specific to anyone here...).

Russian ex-girlfriend. I love Russia and Ukraine generally, though, and usually visit one or the other at least once a year on holiday. I do some work with Russian companies we well - i just came back from a conference in St Petersburg yesterday.

I lived in St.Petersburg for a couple of years. I got there in 1993 and the booze 'n' fags stalls were just getting in booze that no-one had had before. Everything got consumed like vodka, i.e. in shots, even the chocolate cream liqueurs, amaretto, etc. Still can't face amaretto as a result. I miss St. P a lot - I used to go back every year but all my Russian friends emigrated!

eric, a vsop cognac is the "best" grade you could get for mixing. on a budget, lots of ppl do fine with a decent california brandy.

if you can get it in your area, pierre ferrand ambre cognac is an excellent choice.

My mom didn't want any of it, so I brought home much of my dad's booze holdings today and there's a lot still to take if I want it. Is Ancient Age a decent bourbon? Is Matador a decent tequila? Is Travellers 5 Barrel Reserve a decent rum?

If the tequila is 100% agave, it is fine. Ancient Age is pretty run of the mill, but Ancient Ancient Age is good if you can find it.

That's not one of the ones I brought home -- I'll have to see if it's Ancient x1 or x2.

Apparently the rum is from Belize and isn't actually available in North America commercially. Some of these bottles were gifts from an English couple who have a house across the street from my mom, travel a lot and are huge alcohol enthusiasts.

I have a glass bottle full of water that I keep in the fridge. When I want a treat, I mix half a glass of fridge water with half a glass of tap water, for an "extra cool" glass of water. That's how I get my kicks these days

My liquor table isn't that impressive: several amaros and gins, one rye and two bourbon, a token dust-covered bottle of rum, several kinds of bitters, sundry liqueurs like Italicus and St. Germain.

my problem is if I had a well stocked drinks cabinet then there wouldn't ever be any dusty bottles. I do have a 4 pack of Brooklyn pilsner under my desk though.

So, that list above is basically a self-directed course of study in spirits and cocktails that started in late 2016...maybe B.A. level, maybe M.A. level, but either way, a lot cheaper than several years of college would have been (if there is such a thing as a degree in spirits and mixology) and a lot, LOT cheaper than the travel costs and bar tabs it would have taken to try all those spirits at the retail level, per drink. I don't really drink much, but I wanted to learn about this stuff ("why" is for my theoretical future therapist), and it transitioned me to a new career after DTP/prepress sputtered to a halt. I didn't list the interesting bottles I've bought through the bar I work at, which would be several more. My small shelf of books about spirits and cocktails should get a mention as well...I've learned so much.

I have a handful of old single malts... I always keep a bottle of akvavit, usually Linie.. there's some Laird's straight apple brandy (good for toddies, and a favorite of George Washington... stilled owned by the same family)... a bottle of Jenever that someone left here. Some cheap gin, rum, and a little vodka... a bottle of Pronto!, trader joe's cheap fake campari

I don't drink a lot of spirits at home, sometimes a dram when I get home from a walk on a cold day. I drink wayyy too much sherry & vermouth, however

i wonder if the monks know about all the fake green chartreuses that have come out and have any regrets

There's a new one called Green Key produced here in Chicago that I'm curious about because it seems like they made an effort to make it as similar to Green Chartreuse as possible. For one thing, it's 110 proof, which is probably the most important thing if you're trying to use it as a substitute in cocktails.

Actually, I did see a 750ml bottle of Yellow Chartreuse at Binny's last week, but it was $90 and I wasn't prepared to drop that much. Still thinking about it, though.

No booze at home

No booze, just 25-ish bottles of wine below ground.

My wife's dad works in a good local wine/liquor store and he can store us stuff sometimes, including a bottle of yellow Chartreuse recently when they got a few. We also get to use his employee discount. Best father-in-law ever!
