Opposing team and fans still under siege apparently.

Jon Leyne BBC News, Cairo

Football fans in Egypt can be violent, and certainly there is a bitter rivalry between these two teams.

The al-Ahly fans, known as Ultras, have a particular reputation for violence.

But lately they have been at the forefront of clashes with the police.

On the social media, there has been speculation - and I hasten to add there is no evidence - that the security forces may have had an interest in taking on al-Ahly supporters.

Certainly riot police did not seem to be very effective, they were standing around, and maybe there simply were not enough there.

hard to make out what's happening in the video posted on the other thread, but this stuff is so sickening/frightening

flags post o fu (darraghmac), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 20:41 (thirteen years ago)

the riot police just let the 'fans' chase after the teams players. They did fuck all.

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Wednesday, 1 February 2012 20:43 (thirteen years ago)

there weren't very many of them there, from what i could see

flags post o fu (darraghmac), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 20:44 (thirteen years ago)

the footage on sky news is scary. Apparently when the other games were postponed , a stadium in Cairo has been set on fire by fans angry at it being postponed.

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Wednesday, 1 February 2012 20:46 (thirteen years ago)

They've been toning security down because of what security forces were like under Mubarak. Dan posted a thing on the other thread said this sort of thing has been brewing for a while.

At least they haven't sacked half the city, yet.

Sanpaku, Wednesday, 1 February 2012 21:13 (thirteen years ago)

That's fascinating. I had no idea about demes.

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 1 February 2012 21:19 (thirteen years ago)

this is horrific and i can only hope for the injured to get better and for the families of the victims.

it fucking sucks man, football has a proven history of bringing people together. christmas 1914 and all that, where it didn't matter about the politics, they were just dudes who wanted to kick a ball around. shit like this still happening, whether being on this ludicrous scale or just some ultras in italy stabbing one dude who walked through the wrong part of the stadium needs to fucking stop.

just read a tweet that said these two sides have mutual fan hatred going back to the suez crisis

long duk dan (dan m), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 22:14 (thirteen years ago)

al-ahly, whose ultras white knights were a large part of the revolution, getting attacked seems a bit, fishy, if you ask me. orchestration, collusion, or just inaction by the security forces for this to happen ive got to guess.

zverotic discourse (jim in glasgow), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 22:43 (thirteen years ago)

also the death toll is too high to be just people scrapping in an impromptu riot. security forces involved or some sort of crush has to have occurred.

zverotic discourse (jim in glasgow), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 22:45 (thirteen years ago)

there were knives involved

Number None, Wednesday, 1 February 2012 22:47 (thirteen years ago)

yeah, i know? scottish cup final 1980 ended in a riot, folk were using broken bottles and bricks on one another, no cunt died.

I first saw the Ultras White Knights last April, in Tahrir Square, during a Friday demonstration against the SCAF. Five thousand kids holding a twenty-foot Egyptian flag came marching from a side street into the Square. At the head of the group was a kid of 15 with a drum leading a chant directed towards the police: “That’s right motherfuckers, we haven’t forgotten Tahrir, motherfuckers. And we’ll fuck you up again, motherfuckers.”

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 22:50 (thirteen years ago)

fair enough jim. Just thought it was bit more than scrapping

Number None, Wednesday, 1 February 2012 22:51 (thirteen years ago)

the notion that the police allowed this to happen seems plausible given the ahly ultras attitudes toward them in the past

long duk dan (dan m), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 22:53 (thirteen years ago)

74 dead now

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Wednesday, 1 February 2012 23:01 (thirteen years ago)

yeah this death toll makes no sense for a sports brawl, that's like a line people up and shoot them number

iatee, Wednesday, 1 February 2012 23:16 (thirteen years ago)

Al Ahly had a perfect season in 2005. This one, not so much.
