And what search term do you think it was? Yep, "Blazin' Squad". Brilliant.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 7 September 2002 07:26 (twenty-three years ago)

they were probably looking for porn

webber (webber), Saturday, 7 September 2002 08:51 (twenty-three years ago)

How do you find out these things?

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 7 September 2002 14:29 (twenty-three years ago)

sitemeter

DJ Martian (djmartian), Saturday, 7 September 2002 14:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Check Sitemeter, Ronan.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Saturday, 7 September 2002 14:37 (twenty-three years ago)

I have sitemeter but don't you need to pay for the good features like that one?

Mine tells me very little.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 7 September 2002 14:46 (twenty-three years ago)

No - I don't know what you're doing wrong but you get referral stats for free. Look!

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 7 September 2002 14:51 (twenty-three years ago)

God, I don't know either, bah.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 7 September 2002 14:58 (twenty-three years ago)

I use www.ugotstats.com, which has a lot less people using it, so I come higher on their list of top sites.

I've now been googled for "Allo Allo quotes von klinkerhoffen". I love Google.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 7 September 2002 15:00 (twenty-three years ago)

you show him, dastoor ! - the only draw back with free sitemeter - only shows last 100 details.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Saturday, 7 September 2002 15:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, but mine are all for "hair enthusiast" so it doesn't matter.

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 7 September 2002 15:05 (twenty-three years ago)

are you in jock land at the mo N? i see the scots just scrapped a 2 all draw to Faroe Isles

DJ Martian (djmartian), Saturday, 7 September 2002 15:09 (twenty-three years ago)

I know. The Sunday Herald lot next door sounded like they didn't want them to equalise as it would have made a better story. I was stuck trying to get the England commentary on my radio but our building seems to be a MW free zone. I had to rely on Eurosport.

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 7 September 2002 15:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Eurosport.com that is.

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 7 September 2002 15:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Campaign to get Mark Burchill back in the Scottish squad, he scored for Pompey today !

DJ Martian (djmartian), Saturday, 7 September 2002 15:17 (twenty-three years ago)

CQ Counter is nice & free, too:
www.cqcounter.com
you can see google hits in the "last 20 urls" section of your stats.

My first searching for porn google hit: "http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=Heat fetish warm air&hl=en&lr=&i"

lyra (lyra), Saturday, 7 September 2002 20:50 (twenty-three years ago)

I use Sitemeter too but every single one of the referral URLs is coming up "unknown".

Nate Patrin, Saturday, 7 September 2002 21:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Try the cqcounter one- it's pretty good with referrals.

lyra (lyra), Saturday, 7 September 2002 21:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Actually wait it might be because I am not actually logged in. Gimme a few minutes.

Nate Patrin, Saturday, 7 September 2002 21:13 (twenty-three years ago)

You have to use the javascript version of the site meter HTML to log referrals - they don't really make this obvious.

Graham (graham), Saturday, 7 September 2002 21:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Well crap.

Nate Patrin, Saturday, 7 September 2002 21:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Are there any Sitemeter-esque things that write clean HTML? Sitemeter is the only thing on my page that causes iCab to frown.

Better yet, can anyone point me to a completely no-brainer, pre-fabbed CGI/Perl script that will let me duplicate the functionality of Sitemeter? I know I can look at my server logs, but they're tough to read and only cover a few days.

Phil (phil), Sunday, 8 September 2002 00:45 (twenty-three years ago)

phil, you can probably tweak the presupplied sitemeter html if you want to get it to stop making icab frown. I think that as long as it performs the same function - despite not being exactly the same - their server wouldn't care.

I don't know the names of any but there are a number of programs you can get to format your logs offline for you, if that would help.

Josh (Josh), Sunday, 8 September 2002 15:41 (twenty-three years ago)

My favourites referrals to my blog are "everything about rabbits and their babbies" and "do parakeets have eyelids that close". Most are porn requests, though, and mostly about wiping butt. Hmmm.

Mark C, Sunday, 8 September 2002 19:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Well I got mine to work now and so far the most interesting thing is four Google and/or Yahoo inquiries in a row (I can only assume from the same person) looking for the lyrics to Missy's "Work It". Some of them are oddly specific ("missy elliott lyrics get nails done get hair did" -- and you best BELIEVE I turned up #1 in THAT search boy-eee).

Nate Patrin, Sunday, 8 September 2002 21:14 (twenty-three years ago)

phil, you can probably tweak the presupplied sitemeter html if you want to get it to stop making icab frown. I think that as long as it performs the same function - despite not being exactly the same - their server wouldn't care. The problem's a little more complicated than that, as the bad HTML is actually being supplied by a Javascript hosted by Sitemeter. If you open my page [1] and look at the source, you won't find anything amiss -- the problem stuff is all coming from that script, and its output isn't visible via "View Source"... However, I've downloaded the script and taken a look, and I think I can revise it and have a local copy that'll do the same thing, but write clean HTML. Unless I'm missing something, I suspect that should work. The problem, by the way, is relatively minor -- the script writes "&" instead of "&" -- but when you're already so close to having completely clean HTML, it makes you want to go the last few yards and make it 100% compliant.

Phil (phil), Monday, 9 September 2002 00:50 (twenty-three years ago)

the script writes "&" instead of "&" That should've come out as "the script writes [just] & instead of [the encoded version] & amp;."

Phil (phil), Monday, 9 September 2002 00:54 (twenty-three years ago)

maybe you can just write them and ask them to fix it?

Josh (Josh), Monday, 9 September 2002 00:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Why do my line breaks keep disappearing? They were double breaks and everything (though I know the single-line break bug was fixed when we moved to the new server).

Phil (phil), Monday, 9 September 2002 00:55 (twenty-three years ago)

You're probably right, I should do that. I've had such bad luck with writing to other free services that I'm gunshy, but maybe Sitemeter will be more responsive (than Tripod, Geocities, et al.)

Phil (phil), Monday, 9 September 2002 00:57 (twenty-three years ago)

By the way, my site gets tons -- and I mean TONS -- of hits from people looking for tennis porn. "Serena+Williams+perfect+ass", "Tommy+Haas+girlfriend", "Capriati+stripping+nightclub", and much worse. During any of the Grand Slam events, those referrals will typically make up something like a third of my hits.

Was there some sort of incident with Capriati shedding her clothes in a club, by the way? I've been getting several hits a day on that referral since about mid-week. Maybe John McEnroe started storytelling on the air or something, and piqued the interest of the sweaty-palmed contigent...

Phil (phil), Monday, 9 September 2002 01:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Note Phil's cunning attempt at deflecting the tennis grime googlers' attention onto ILE.

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 9 September 2002 07:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Hmmm I gotta say that I think I am getting shedloads of spam from Sitemeter so if you want to check funny stats try and find alternative options, hmmmm.

Sarah (starry), Monday, 9 September 2002 07:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Or just give them a rub email address.

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 9 September 2002 07:41 (twenty-three years ago)

My favourite search so far has to be "annabell giles fucking thora heard in treacle video". They spelt "thora hird" wrong, the fools.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 9 September 2002 08:31 (twenty-three years ago)

six years pass...

so, how do you find these stats

roxymuzak, Sunday, 7 December 2008 08:48 (sixteen years ago)

IIRC when you open up your site meter page it's the "by referral" or "by entry link" link.

miss precious perfect (musically), Sunday, 7 December 2008 08:56 (sixteen years ago)

I'm running this WordPress plug-in

http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-stats/
