how different are you in your online to real life persona?

I met a chap from a mailing list I was on a few weeks back, and he said "You're far less combative than I expected". So how do you differ from your online persona?

DV (dirtyvicar), Saturday, 7 September 2002 11:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I used to be a lot mellower and friendler and more easy-going than my online persona, which used to be very sarcastic and combative. I've tried to be much nicer to people online recently...

Matt DC (Matt DC), Saturday, 7 September 2002 11:19 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm much harder in real life.

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 7 September 2002 11:25 (twenty-three years ago)

hmmm...

vic (vicc13), Saturday, 7 September 2002 11:38 (twenty-three years ago)

i am more snuggly.

anthony easton (anthony), Saturday, 7 September 2002 11:41 (twenty-three years ago)

I am less tolerant, more opinionated and a lot funnier IRL.

toraneko (toraneko), Saturday, 7 September 2002 12:25 (twenty-three years ago)

relatively similar i would say, although perhaps only others can judge that.

gareth (gareth), Saturday, 7 September 2002 12:29 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm much ruder to people in real life. I have a worse hangover in real life, too.

Tim (Tim), Saturday, 7 September 2002 12:30 (twenty-three years ago)

I am less lucid, and more contrary.

david h (david h), Saturday, 7 September 2002 12:33 (twenty-three years ago)

yes, tims definitely ruder in real life. i like it though!

gareth (gareth), Saturday, 7 September 2002 12:35 (twenty-three years ago)

I talk more IRL.

Maria (Maria), Saturday, 7 September 2002 12:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Gareth is indeed the same IRL. Except he talks and has a body, obv.*

*(?)

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 7 September 2002 12:59 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm probably more reserved in my opinions (especially music!) except when it comes to politics or explaining people, or if I'm with someone I know well enough to be 'intense' with. I tend to be more jokey as well, often to the point of silliness - on ILX the very fact of writing probably veers me towards seriousness and verbosity.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Saturday, 7 September 2002 13:50 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm different to my online persona I think. Though, over the years my online persona has changed alot.

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 7 September 2002 13:57 (twenty-three years ago)

I like verbosity so long as it is done in small paragraphs.

toraneko (toraneko), Saturday, 7 September 2002 13:58 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm probably a bit more enthusiastic offline, maybe more to say aswell if that's not a massive stretch of the imagination.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 7 September 2002 14:26 (twenty-three years ago)

I talk about Radiohead even more.
I ricochet between impossibly quiet and shy and impossible to shut up.
I'm very sarcastic, to the point of accidentally hurting people's feelings.
I laugh a lot, and then become embarrassed because I hate the way I laugh.
My face is overly expressive.
I tire easily in social situations and get terrible headaches, and can suddenly turn into an awful bitch.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Saturday, 7 September 2002 15:46 (twenty-three years ago)

"Mr. Ltener, you sound like a really attractive guy. You belong in New Jersey."

Roseanne Roseannadanna (bnw), Saturday, 7 September 2002 16:10 (twenty-three years ago)

I am a lot quieter at first. Then I am really crass and sarcastic.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Saturday, 7 September 2002 16:16 (twenty-three years ago)

I am more jovial in real life, ad yet I am also more shy. It depends on who I am talking to, and how long I have known them. I think I am also more polarizing in real life. You either like me or not, whereas on ILx, it seems to take longer for everyone to get a sense of each other's characterisitcs.

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Saturday, 7 September 2002 17:40 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm fatter in real life.

Andrew L (Andrew L), Saturday, 7 September 2002 17:42 (twenty-three years ago)

More emotional IRL: I think I come across as rather cold here, and by email. I expect I find it easier to express logic and ideas than feelings in writing.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 7 September 2002 17:50 (twenty-three years ago)

I tend to fluctuate between the quiet and shy nice guy to a total bitch bitch. And I tend to avoid social interactions with people I don't really know.

brg30 (brg30), Saturday, 7 September 2002 17:53 (twenty-three years ago)

I talk alot more, a hell of a lot more, about nothing or something it doesnt matter. I talk, and I have horrible horrible manners. It comes from my roomates I swear, Bluenosers talk differently so I always assume people are done talking when they are just breathing in for air.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Sunday, 8 September 2002 00:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Ned said that I'm a lot more calm on the net than in real life. Possibly this is because he caught me on a day when I found out one of my good friends likes Oasis.

Andrew (enneff), Sunday, 8 September 2002 02:09 (twenty-three years ago)

In real life i have a face.

I talk a lot more in real life. A lot. ILE gives me the luxury of a delete button and pause to think before hitting Submit.

I'm just as likely [maybe more] to make random pop-culture quotes, harp on about music, say 'r0x0r' [i almost said 'grebt' the other day, oh dear], do daft things while drunk, or offer proposals of marriage. Those last two kinda go together, though.

petra jane (petra jane), Sunday, 8 September 2002 02:45 (twenty-three years ago)

petra will you mary me

anthony easton (anthony), Sunday, 8 September 2002 03:05 (twenty-three years ago)

If I ever meet you Petra and find you have a face, I swear I will probably be very surprised.
In real life I think am a lot more cynical and worse at talking to people.
I am just as inclined to say stupid things that I can't take back, though.

Livvie, Sunday, 8 September 2002 04:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Mary you? wossat, clutching you to my matronly blue-shrouded busom [it's awful toasty wot with the bleeding heart and all]? Can't we just get married?

petra jane (petra jane), Sunday, 8 September 2002 04:56 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm more talkative and probably funnier in real life ("probably" because I only assume I'm funny in real life).

Vinnie (vprabhu), Sunday, 8 September 2002 05:12 (twenty-three years ago)

depends on how drunk i am and how annoying you are.

threemetalinsects (threemetalinsects), Sunday, 8 September 2002 05:23 (twenty-three years ago)

''I talk alot more, a hell of a lot more, about nothing or something it doesnt matter. I talk, and I have horrible horrible manners. It comes from my roomates I swear, Bluenosers talk differently so I always assume people are done talking when they are just breathing in for air.''

In real life Noodles turns everything to Sloane.

In real life I am prob much quieter and...that's it i think.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 8 September 2002 09:17 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm definitely a lot more chatty in real life. Sometimes I come across as a bit of a mentalist on the net, so I guess I mull over what I post.

Michael Bourke, Sunday, 8 September 2002 13:17 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm less immediate. And more openminded. And sillier.

Andrew Thames, Sunday, 8 September 2002 13:29 (twenty-three years ago)

i'm shyer, i mumble (it'd just be silly to replicate that online) and i'm often awkward when things get intimate

mitch lastnamewithheld, Sunday, 8 September 2002 14:59 (twenty-three years ago)

oh and in real life i get annoyed when people talk for a long time.

Maria (Maria), Sunday, 8 September 2002 15:04 (twenty-three years ago)

in real life I will talk to you a lot less unless I'm pretty familiar with you. or I'm teaching your philosophy class.

I also sneeze more.

Josh (Josh), Sunday, 8 September 2002 15:35 (twenty-three years ago)

i'm mean.

mandee, Monday, 9 September 2002 00:40 (twenty-three years ago)

shyer. (except not shy when drunk but get MEAN)

di smith (lucylurex), Monday, 9 September 2002 00:46 (twenty-three years ago)

I say a whole lot less. And I'm far more interesting. Hmm paradox.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 9 September 2002 01:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Also I've been told to add that I'm pretty much silent, or at least severely reticient.

Andrew Thames, Monday, 9 September 2002 01:38 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm even more of a hardnose asshole. Also, I interrupt. I talk very fast. I'm more verbose.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Monday, 9 September 2002 01:43 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't really even know what I am like in real life. I never dare to draw conclusions about myself.

rainy, Monday, 9 September 2002 01:52 (twenty-three years ago)

In real life, I rarely refer to Houellebecq or vouch for the efforts of Philly boy groups. Otherwise, I am about the same. If I do indeed have an "online persona." Which come to think of it, I'm not entirely sure that I do.

Mary (Mary), Monday, 9 September 2002 02:48 (twenty-three years ago)

I share rainy's sentiments exactly (with respect to myself, not rainy).

felicity (felicity), Monday, 9 September 2002 04:15 (twenty-three years ago)

I much more clever, better looking, sexier, more intelligent, more articulate, more reliable, more suave, more serious, better dressed, better groomed, funnier, more powerful, more likeable, and better in bed.

Seriously.

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 9 September 2002 04:44 (twenty-three years ago)

I've said all that to demonstrate the following: I am less of an idiot in real life, I'd like to think.

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 9 September 2002 04:45 (twenty-three years ago)

we're all probably a little less cocky, eh?

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 9 September 2002 05:57 (twenty-three years ago)

I would guess - very similar? Emotional, talk bollocks, wave arms around, contradict myself, change my mind every 5 seconds etc etc

Dr. C (Dr. C), Monday, 9 September 2002 06:42 (twenty-three years ago)

I blush more. And use shorter words.

Archel (Archel), Monday, 9 September 2002 08:03 (twenty-three years ago)

i suck in real life. i'm not sure how different that is to my online persona...

g-kit (g-kit), Monday, 9 September 2002 13:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Andrew is turning a funny colour in work.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 9 September 2002 13:50 (twenty-three years ago)

online persona: .......
real life persona: ......

JC (JC A.), Monday, 9 September 2002 14:21 (twenty-three years ago)

wooo, i wuz namechecked by starry! who is grebt in real life, but you all know that.

i am about as quiet IRL as i am online.

rener, Tuesday, 10 September 2002 09:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, but in RL you speak Gaelic.

the pinefox, Tuesday, 10 September 2002 10:26 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm less obnoxious in real life. Something about not having the person's face right in front of you makes it easier to be rude to them. Plus there's no chance of receiving a deserved physical beating.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 08:15 (twenty-three years ago)

I've been told I'm exactly the same way on the net and in real life. Hm.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 08:45 (twenty-three years ago)

i'm fightier in person. i try not to be.

angela (angela), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 12:33 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm nowhere near as articulate in person.

j.lu (j.lu), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 12:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Has anyone so far said they are *better* in real life?

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 12:40 (twenty-three years ago)

I think I am. I work better if you can see me.

Emma, Wednesday, 11 September 2002 12:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Actually, I suppose Kilian did.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 12:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Emma is scarier in real life.

I think actually I am better in real life. Funnier, more articulate, bullshit better. Its just those goofy looks that throw people off.

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 12:55 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm better! It'd be hard not to be, though.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 13:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Sometimes I think I am more like 'the real me' online these days, due to not getting nearly enough quality conversation time IRL.

Archel (Archel), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 14:19 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm better in real life cos I can talk to you without using a computer.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 14:24 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't talk about sex at all in RL. Really. I don't curse in RL, either. In RL, I'm constantly mistaken for a born-again Christian.

Christine "Green Leafy Dragon" Indigo (cindigo), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 14:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Has anyone so far said they are *better* in real life?

Oi, Nick, that's what I meant!

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 15:32 (twenty-three years ago)

I meant to brag but I didn't specify which was which and now it looks like self-deprecation ...

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 15:33 (twenty-three years ago)

i would rip your fucking tongue out if you ever met me in real life. Or in Passions.

Queen G (Queeng), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 18:11 (twenty-three years ago)

When on line I am nine feet tall. Sucks if someone already made that joke, and no way am I going to bother to check. That joke isn't worth it.

Brian Mowrey (Brian Mowrey), Thursday, 12 September 2002 03:04 (twenty-three years ago)

b-but being a mean asshole IS better in real life. I just have trouble pulling it off online.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Thursday, 12 September 2002 06:06 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm better in real life, cos I can communicate on all the necessary levels and not get so angry or defensive like I do here. I'm also more sensitive to others.

On the flip side, I can be extremely shy in real life, whereas here if I feel shy I just leave.

And Mandee, you're the sweetest piece of rare gold coinage ever!

Mark C (Mark C), Thursday, 12 September 2002 14:37 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm not even the slightest bit mean? :(

Mandee, Thursday, 12 September 2002 15:38 (twenty-three years ago)

wouldn't it be great if everyone's real life and online persona's swapped places!

DV (dirtyvicar), Thursday, 12 September 2002 15:48 (twenty-three years ago)

So, em, ah, em....

DV (dirtyvicar), Thursday, 12 September 2002 15:50 (twenty-three years ago)

It's so nice to meet you.

*crickets chirping as I wait for you to fill the silence*

So, what do you do?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 12 September 2002 17:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Hiya kid, what's up?

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 12 September 2002 17:46 (twenty-three years ago)

I dance a lot more in real life.

Lek Dukagjin, Thursday, 12 September 2002 17:54 (twenty-three years ago)

I talk less. Squirm more. Smile more. Smell better. And hardly ever argue.

bnw (bnw), Thursday, 12 September 2002 18:06 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't always like my online persona, sometimes I don't say what I want to say or get my point across, and make jokes that seem funny at the time.

In real life, I think I'm far more bolshy at work. I can be pretty withdrawn and sullen, which I dislike about myself.

I'm nice to my friends, and have a good laugh with them.

At ILX pubmeets, I think I am closest to my online identity, as I've tried my best to be talkative and friendly but probably am not the best person to engage in one to one conversation in the big group environment.

What am I saying is my persona is not set in stone.

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 12 September 2002 18:11 (twenty-three years ago)

jel - I like most your dumb jokes.

bnw (bnw), Thursday, 12 September 2002 18:24 (twenty-three years ago)

you do? wow! thanks dude!

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 12 September 2002 18:27 (twenty-three years ago)

I was thinking about something else about me in real life. I don't read subtle non-verbal cues very well. I overstay my welcome, frequently. I don't know when I'm insulting someone, or going beyond the boundaries of good taste. And when I want something from someone, I don't know how to be discreet about it. I end up annoying people until they snap at me, and even then sometimes I misinterpret their snapping as joking. And I can become really fixated on certain topics, not being able to talk about anything else. This is really why I don't have much of a social life.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Friday, 13 September 2002 02:59 (twenty-three years ago)

IRL I don't think about music very much.

B:Rad (Brad), Friday, 13 September 2002 03:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Very shy, but very friendly one on one. Never rude. Chunkier. Just as boring in real life, I guess. I don't know, what do you think Ned, Kris, Alex SF, and the Sean SF wherever the hell you are? Hey, Sean Feeney, I miss you, what's happening?

Arthur (Arthur), Friday, 13 September 2002 04:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Not boring at all, but definitely friendly, m'dear Arthur. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 13 September 2002 07:54 (twenty-three years ago)

I spend more time asking people questions. I hate it about these forums that you're not engaged in a conversation.

maryann, Friday, 13 September 2002 08:07 (twenty-three years ago)

I hate it about these forums that no one can see you or touch you. I know most people hate me on ILE. In real life, I don't care.

rainy (lucylurex), Friday, 13 September 2002 09:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh come on Rainy, don't say that. You're the only non-coding person to get their own thread saying how great they are. You've been called a wonderful hostess, a princess and 'some sort of fairy creature'. Nabisco's proposed marriage and Graham sends you hair.

Not the actios of people who hate you. Don't be down.

Anna (Anna), Friday, 13 September 2002 09:37 (twenty-three years ago)

What Rainy? No way! I don't know how you got to that conclusion!

jel -- (jel), Friday, 13 September 2002 09:42 (twenty-three years ago)

did graham send rainy a hair doll?

felicity (felicity), Friday, 13 September 2002 09:42 (twenty-three years ago)

online i am ferry ferry flat.

nathalie (nathalie), Friday, 13 September 2002 13:07 (twenty-three years ago)

She got a piece of my golden locks. I want to phone you this week Rainy whilst it's not on my bill, are you up for that?

Graham (graham), Friday, 13 September 2002 14:59 (twenty-three years ago)

in real life i am a man and i have a moustache. serious.

joan vich (joan vich), Friday, 13 September 2002 15:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Anna I would like to point out that RAINY proposed to ME.

nabisco (nabisco), Friday, 13 September 2002 15:18 (twenty-three years ago)

So you hate her? Is that what you're saying. Bravado's all very well but the poor mite's well being is at stake.

Graham (graham), Friday, 13 September 2002 15:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Rainy needless to say is not hateable. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 13 September 2002 19:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Jeez Nits, you said yes didn't you? Don't be pedantic when I'm being nice.

Anna (Anna), Friday, 13 September 2002 22:44 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm really sorry about that stuff I wrote, I was really fucked up on drugs and alcohol and I was feeling some rage and whatnot. I'm okay now, but actually I do have a black eye, so I guess that's my punishment!

rainy, Tuesday, 17 September 2002 22:33 (twenty-three years ago)
