there are two "weird" subplots, one involving a serial killer dressed in a white suit and the other involving strange smoke emitting from a nearby factory that you can tell they are really trying to do something profound with but neither has anything to do w/ the rest of the movie at all

creepy shit that has nothing to do with anything is pretty donnie darko-esque

Having listened to the director's commentary on Donnie Darko, I'm convinced that the only difference between this (or any other) dumb-ass movie and Donnie Darko is dumb luck.

I have yet to see something starring Kat Dennings that wasn't terrible (aside from "The 40-Year-Old Virgin", which I basically forgot she was in) so I don't really understand why ppl seek her movies out.
