why

Luxxotica Group happens to have a near monopoly in both the prescription eyeglass and fashion branded sunglass markets. They own the Ray-Ban brand.

I'd like to know why people choose to buy and then wear them

conrad, Thursday, 9 February 2012 19:43 (thirteen years ago)

what's your beef with it? ubiquitousness?

jed_, Thursday, 9 February 2012 19:50 (thirteen years ago)

just feels like they're not sunglasses but say SUNGLASSES on!!!!

conrad, Thursday, 9 February 2012 19:57 (thirteen years ago)

you've got cooler glasses so it's all good.

They're a good widely available value option for eye-glasses, especially compared to Oliver Peoples, Cutler & Gross etc. That said, "de-badging" them would be ideal. I once used a pair of aviators with clear prescription lenses, but they looked serial-killer-ish, so I converted them to prescription sunglasses.

Been tempted to go aviator style, but not sure if I want to look like BTK Killer/ Walter White

I figure when I turn 40 I can either wear aviators or listen to Jimmy Buffett and well, looking like a serial killer sounds more promising.

the gregory peck were too droopy for my small face. emerson was perfect.

jed_, Friday, 10 February 2012 03:14 (thirteen years ago)

Note, I was only referring to Oliver Peoples' prices - they have great frames. Some people who left Peoples formed Barton Perreira, make amazing frames as well.

Spencer Chow, Friday, 10 February 2012 06:38 (thirteen years ago)

i am wearing the oliver peoples gregory peck rn

jed_, Sunday, 12 February 2012 21:49 (thirteen years ago)

oliver peoples

Also Luxottica Group S.p.A.

Sanpaku, Sunday, 12 February 2012 22:33 (thirteen years ago)

there is a vintage frames dude in Camden market who will rant to you (quite politely) about Luxottica for as long as you care to listen. his basic thesis is that they are responsible for the death of adventurous sunglasses.
