Do you only have one channel, Mike? Anyway, I think it is occasionally quite funny, if rubbish much of the time, and with some immensely self-satisfied terrible comedy acting (particularly almost all the supporting cast like the landlady and her daughter and the cop). Why do you hate it, though? I don't see what makes it worse than many, many other sitcoms.

the first couple of series were fine then the writers lost it. pity.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 7 September 2002 19:58 (twenty-three years ago)

It's just so damned much -- so gratingly overactive. Which is a shame, because the writing is decent sometimes. In order to get anything out of it you basically have to give up and let it run you.

I do find it strange, though, that it runs completely counter to television's usual enervating effect: any attempt to half-heartedly watch it will probably end with the TV being switched off. Either you want to see it or you want to kill it; there is no in-between.

I like this show. I can't remember when I last saw it though. But still I always found it quite funny, better than stuff like Sienfield that's for sure.

I just can't take it. I don't think its so funny that they are aliens. Why make fun of Aliens? If they hadn't altered our genetic code long ago we would not be so different from the other animals. And why do they show dead cat

Mike Hanle y (mike), Sunday, 8 September 2002 02:30 (twenty-three years ago)

dead cat or French Stewart?

Kim (Kim), Sunday, 8 September 2002 02:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh I dont know, I'm just very very distraught about all of this. I painted my tv red to show my total anguish!

Mike Hanle y (mike), Sunday, 8 September 2002 04:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Hard to take because of the acting. I always find it funny now to see John Lithgow in serious roles, like the bad guy in Cliffhanger. I constantly expect him to burst out with some non-sequitur.

Vinnie (vprabhu), Sunday, 8 September 2002 05:16 (twenty-three years ago)

I really enjoy it. I used to hate it, but I think it's kinda grown on me. I'd rather watch it than most stuff on TV these days.

After an unpromising start, this has made it into my top 6 Mike Hanle y threads of all time.

Red seems to be a pretty hot colour for anguish. I always thought total anguish would be more of a poison green colour. Hmm.

Kim (Kim), Monday, 9 September 2002 00:52 (twenty-three years ago)

i thought the bad guy in Cliffhanger was Dan from Eastenders?

"fack the munny and fack you!"

peep game on gas prices (deej), Monday, 2 March 2009 05:43 (sixteen years ago)

it was meant in jest...there's been lots of things that i had long ago dismissed that ilx has thankfully made me reconsider but i just don't know if im ready for the reappraisal of 3rd rock. but maybe its better than i realize?? i think i actively avoided it because i found every single character annoying.

suomi cum laude (rent), Monday, 2 March 2009 05:58 (sixteen years ago)

Reappraisal?? It won a gang of Emmys. I guess I can see why some folks might not like it, it's kind of got a real performative vibe, but I don't think its exactly crazy to say it was a worthwhile show. I watched & enjoyed it when it was out also
