What's the first movie you remember seeing in the theater and really not liking?

There were obviously movies that inspired less extreme positive reactions to than others, but the first time I remember walking out of a movie thinking "that was NOT good" was Honey I Blew Up The Kid when I was (apparently, doing the math) 12. My mom was annoyed with my sister and I for being less than grateful for the expenditure, and probably because she'd never had us react like that before. I think my reaction previously to movies was either to pay attention or not (i.e. just ignoring ET at children's parties as a kid), not pay attention only to voice discontent.

Do you remember the first time you saw a movie in the theater and regretted it afterward?

My grandmother took my brother and I to see a movie I only vaguely remember about free-diving that was boring as shit (for a 7-8 year old.

Best guess it was http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Big_Blue

Nothing but Trouble.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0102558/

Which I sort of love the existence of now because it's just so damn ridiculous.

I basically twisted my dad's arm to take me to see The Right Stuff when I was four or five years old because I thought the whole thing was going to be about space shuttles, like one of those films at the Air and Space Museum. We walked out not very long into the film because (1) I was bored out of my mind and (2) I think there was some sort of sex scene or other inappropriate material

Starchaser: The Legend of Orin, the first animated 3D movie?? I must have been 8. The 3D glasses kept coming off so it looked all blurry reds and greens. I hated it

mmmm, Monday, 13 February 2012 17:14 (thirteen years ago)

I think for me the answer is Ken Russell's Tommy. I was 11 and wasn't really old enough to get any of it yet.

I am notoriously easy to entertain. I know there had to be a movie before this but the first one that comes to mind is "Eyes Wide Shut".

The first Star Trek. I think I was around 6. I was big into Star Wars, it had "Star" in the title, it was about space, so this'll be cool, right? I was literally bored to tears. To this day, I still haven't seen any other Star Trek movie.

oh dude, Star Trek VI is practically slapstick comedy

Erm... the only film I've ever walked out of was Pineapple Express. Why? Cos it look shit.

The Invisible Superstars (dog latin), Monday, 13 February 2012 17:22 (thirteen years ago)

I do remember really loathing Armageddon, which my aunt and uncle took me to, but I was 18 at the time and I can't believe that was the first bad box office experience I ever had in my fully aware life.

movies I have enjoyed in the theater include:

BOTH Fantastic Four movies
Leonard Part VI
Catwoman

Dune was the first film (I was nine) through which I dozed for at least forty minutes. When I awoke there were still four hours to go.

I'm sure there were others earlier but this comes to mind:

There should've been a special MPAA rating warning of screaming Gene Hackman having a breakdown.

(this film later surfaced in drastically edited form on MST3K)

i cant even remember, i was a pretty easy to please kid. i would go see movies like The Island of Dr. Moreau with my best friend and he'd be like OH MY GOD THIS IS TERRIBLE and want to leave and i'd be like nooo i like it

I think I was extremely undiscerning as a child, I remember happily sitting though a load of right old crap. For example, I went to see Kindergarten Cop on two consecutive weekends for two different friends' birthdays, and that was just fine by me.

it's true! I know I've seen bits and pieces on TV but never cared enough to watch the whole thing. Meanwhile, I know I was fine and dandy watching Mac and Me in the theater.

tbf the kid in mac & me was in a wheelchair, which was pretty fascinating to me at 8

oh i totally remember what this was for me. my dad would take us to see a lot of movies when we stayed for the wkend with him, because it rains a lot in vancouver and tho we went swimming and played games and other things, seeing movies was a good default (and there was a 3 movies for $1 theatre near his place). anyway, i almost died of pre-teen boredom during:

my aunt took my cousin and me to see 'green card' with andy macdowell and gerard depardieu when i was 8 and i literally had no idea what was going on though i do remember feeling very uncomfortable during the kiss/makeout scenes. in fact i think we were told to cover our eyes or something. it was pretty incomprehensible.

i was about 9 years old and the parents decided to take me and my big sister (who was ~12) to see the exorcist. not only could we both not watch it but we were both too scared to sleep alone for like the next couple weeks. still have no idea why they took us to that.

This post made me laugh a lot.

I had the opposite experience when we tried to see ET the first time. We queued for about an hour and didn't get in, so my mother decided to take us to one of the other kids' films they were showing. Nobody can be a tougher audience member than an 11-year-old girl who has been waiting months and months to see ET and is not getting to see it. I sulked all the way through the ads and the trailers (including a trailer for ET! Oh, the injustice!), but hey, Raiders of the Lost Ark turned out to an acceptable substitute in the end.

(High Road to China is my answer to the thread question.)
