I do. It's all I can think about right now. CATBUS has me fascinated and fixated.

Andrew Thames, Sunday, 8 September 2002 10:13 (twenty-three years ago)

like i said, catbus (much more cutesily referred to as NEKOBASU) is the silent hero of tonari no totoro. i got to watch that in 6th form japanese. it's meant to be one of the most popular children's anime films ever. it seemed to take ages, like, 5 periods to watch! probably because all the normal girls in the class thought it was "gay". i'm just sticking to the information you won't find by googling totoro. like, the best bit is where the little sister is telling her dad about catbus and excitedly describes it as what roughly translates as "THE BUS OF CAT!!!"

alex, Sunday, 8 September 2002 10:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Thank you both! But I am still unsure as to why this character seems so terribly unsettling.

Andrew Thames, Sunday, 8 September 2002 12:27 (twenty-three years ago)

it's still miles better than b*ngbus

mark p (Mark P), Sunday, 8 September 2002 12:28 (twenty-three years ago)

But is it real?

N. (nickdastoor), Sunday, 8 September 2002 12:30 (twenty-three years ago)

And can we eat it?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 8 September 2002 12:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, it's ALL TOO REAL. Eat it? You'd have to ask the CATBUS,I don't know.

Andrew Thames, Sunday, 8 September 2002 13:08 (twenty-three years ago)

But see how CATBUS is humping that rooftop so! He is a menace to society and architecture!

petra jane (petra jane), Sunday, 8 September 2002 13:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Aren't rooftops allowed a little sweet kitty love Petra? Have a heart.

Graham (graham), Sunday, 8 September 2002 14:25 (twenty-three years ago)

I want to see a Toranekobasu

Mike Hanle y (mike), Sunday, 8 September 2002 16:48 (twenty-three years ago)

I think it's frightening how you have to walk in his mouth. Couldn't he just have a side door or something? Now I know two more Japanese words neko and basu. Neko! Neko! Basu!

Elisabeth, Sunday, 8 September 2002 22:12 (twenty-three years ago)

It does look like CATBUS is planning on eating those kids, right? There's some deep subliminal evil in that leer and those eyes... I am paranoid...

Andrew Thames, Monday, 9 September 2002 04:43 (twenty-three years ago)

I honestly thought this thread would have photoshopped pictures of kittens humping in a van.

give me a minute...

Alan (Alan), Monday, 9 September 2002 08:01 (twenty-three years ago)

From what I know Catbus is just meant to be a slightly odd form of transport. Maybe he goes bad in the less popular sequal.

Elisabeth, Monday, 9 September 2002 08:28 (twenty-three years ago)

slightly odd

!!

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 9 September 2002 08:30 (twenty-three years ago)

From what I can remember, nekobasu stopped at an ordinary bus stop near Totoro's forest. So that is where you go to catch nekobasu. Why is Andrew scared of him? I think the cat bus is cute! In the movie he does smile and look down on the kids lovingly and all that, well, it's a kind of "hey I'm catbus, I'm really nice, I'll take you to your dying mum!", oh and he has a sign at the front showing his destination, as buses do, and when he's trying to find the little sister it says her name on the sign.

alex, Monday, 9 September 2002 08:54 (twenty-three years ago)

"he has a sign at the front showing his destination, as buses do, and when he's trying to find the little sister it says her name on the sign"

Awww that's kinda cute!

Elisabeth, Monday, 9 September 2002 09:12 (twenty-three years ago)

So is it excessive to buy a region-free DVD player in order to watch one movie? Because there's a new 2-disc Tonari no Totoro, but it's region 2...

Does the 2-disc set say "Now with more CATBUS!" or anything?

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Saturday, 12 November 2005 08:57 (nineteen years ago)

There is MORE CATBUS in the special features. And the documentary about the Miyazaki museum..... Wait! It's NOT just for one movie then, is it!?

JUSTIFIED!

Jaq (Jaq), Sunday, 27 November 2005 02:45 (nineteen years ago)

This was pretty great and all, but yeah, watching Catbus scramble millipede-style over the treeline is seriously creepy. You gotta love him, though, given that the totoro itself pretty much outsources all of its day-saving plot functions onto it.

how the hell could yall have this thread w/o me :[

Excellent! I have no Catbus, but I have a cheshire totoro hoodie and a truly wonderful totoro alarm clock. We are tivo-ing Princess Mononoke tonight - one of the DVDs we don't own and haven't yet seen.

Jaq (Jaq), Friday, 6 January 2006 02:15 (nineteen years ago)

Pom Poko and Only Yesterday are mega great (in sub, at least) and bear frequent rewatching.
And of course, everything else is shiny too.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Friday, 6 January 2006 02:20 (nineteen years ago)

Tivo has the deal now where you can burn things off to DVD, which is tech-greatness, imo. Though better if it were faster.

Jaq (Jaq), Friday, 6 January 2006 02:57 (nineteen years ago)

OH MY GOD that hoodie is AMAZING./ i would never not wear that if i owned it :'(

By the way, I saw Totoro for the first time on big screen a few weeks ago, and for the first time I noticed that the two lights on both sides of Catbus's destination sign are two luminescent mice!

I HAVE A 1995 MO' VAN THAT GOT TRANSFORMED INTO THIS CATBUS. I BROUGHT IT TO A SHOPS AND I WAS LIKE HEY, CAN YOU TURN THIS INTO A CATBUS? SO THEY DID. THEN THAT DAY I DROVE IT HOME. THE CAT BUS ONLY HAS 50K, WHICH ARE ALL HIGHWAY MILES AS I DROVE IT TO WORK 2 DAYS A WEEK AND THAT WAS IT. IT'S IN REALLY GOOD SHAPE AND ALL THE FUR IS STILL ALL THERE. THE STEERING WHEEL HAS A CAT ON IT. IM ONLY ASKING 2900 FOR THE CATBUS BECAUSE ITS REALLY FURRY AND SOMETIMES PEOPLE GET SICK ON IT.
