I had this insane and really frightening dream a couple weeks ago where, during a blizzard, a snowy owl was hovering outside my window just floating in the same spot and staring at me with red eyes. I kept trying to run away and hide from it but it wouldn't leave. So creepy ans strange esp because I like them normally.

Owls can exhibit a remarkable head stability during angular movement of the body about any axis passing through the skull.
K.E. Money 1962. See THE VESTIBULAR SYSTEM OF THE OWL
Author(s): Money, K.E.; Correia, M.J.
Abstract: Owls have a curious variability in the postrotatory head nystagmus following abrupt angular deceleration. Owls can exhibit a remarkable head stability during angular movement of the body about any axis passing through the skull. The vestibular apparatus in the owl is bigger than in man, and a prominent crista neglecta is present. The tectorial membrane, the cupula, and the otolithic membranes of the utricle, saccule and lagena are all "attached" to surfaces in addition to the surfaces bearing hair cells; these attachments are very substantial in the utricular otolithic membrane and in the cupola.

Owls, through no fault of their own, seem to have become the latest decorative motif, following the path taken in earlier years by such disparate organisms as amanita mushrooms, geese, and Guernsey cows. Churning out owl-adorned and owl-shaped merchandise now accounts for nearly 1% of the Chinese export economy.

I got to poke an owl in the head last week. Owl heads are teeny tiny, it's just that they have loads of feathers. But if you poke through the feathers at the back of an owl's neck, there's quite a long way to go, relatively speaking, before you get to actual owl skull.

Owls are great and I felt a bit icky poking about the back of his neck. But it was positively encouraged and the owl didn't seem to mind.

There's a Barred Owl sitting on a dead fir branch in my backyard. It's been there all afternoon, even when I was puttering back there within 25 feet of it. Other birds have been coming by and yelling at it, especially this one Steller's Jay, but it seems imperturbable.

Tonight at dusk there will be a massive fireworks show about a mile from our house. Each year it sounds like a battery of howitzers going off for more than 20 minutes. I don't expect it will stick around much for the show. I hope it likes its nice dead branch and comes back some more, through the summer. It's a better mouser than a cat!
