What other good movies are there similar to Bicycle Thief, 400 Blows, Grand Illusion, Open City, Los Olivados, etc?

Ok you should see the whole trilogy of Rosselini films, which are Open City, Paisa, and Germany: Year Zero. Also, see some Visconti films. I have seen Obsessione, and I will see La Terra Trema as soon as I can! Senso, a later Visconti picture, is slightly influenced by neorealism, but is more of an opera-influenced costume drama. What saves that film from the cliches it works within is the excellent use of color and landscape, as well as the fact that Visconti was sell educated and actually knew womething about opera.
If you have seen De Sica's Bicyle Thief, then see Umberto D. I have heard that is good as well. Those are some of the classics of the first wave of neo-realism.
As for the next wave, I like Antonioni. Il Grido is in the same vein as neorealism, whereas his trilogy of the early sixties deals with alienation in the middle class. The trilogy consists of L'aventurra, La Notte, and L'eclissa (the eclipse.) The latter is the only one I have seen, and it is absolutely incredible. Antonioni uses the backdrop of the modern city as a metaphor for the alienation of the characters. The last 6 minutes of the film are arguably one of the best six minutes of any film, ever, although you must see the rest of the film to understand them.
