I know Beaches is probably completely and totally awful but it was my favorite movie for a while when I was a kid and even I couldn't vote for it in good conscience. God, this list.

quite! i'd rather sit through an Uwe Boll film festival than watch certain of these films.

i mean, there's nothing even endearingly awful or wrong about any of these Garry Marshall films. the list is like a grand monument to stultifying cinematic mediocrity -- the only surprise is that Robin Williams hasn't been in any of Marshall's films (not yet, anyway).

As the above clip shows, good actor. But that's it.

I had to vote Overboard. It's a horrible list but I watched that movie a bajillion times as a kid.

I have long believed that Garry Marshall chooses his movies by how reprehensible the plots are.

I also believe he meant Beaches to be a pun.

His only redeeming quality is a director: Hector Elizondo is (a) continuously employed (b) pretty solid.

Not defending his pre-1994 work, necessarily, but I would argue that this list doesn't get shameful until Eden.

And yeah, his LIA scene is the best thing he has ever done or ever will do, no question.

Pretty Woman OWNS, which I mean in the action-film thread sense of being vile. At least I think I have that right.

The same guy who made the family movie about Rosie O'Donnell on an S&M island is the same guy who made the movie about the hooker-with-a-heart-of-gold who lands her millionaire john is the same guy who made the mentally challenged meet-cute is the same guy who made the amnesiac tricked into being a housewife movie is the same guy who made the movie where Anne Hathaway is made beautiful by an eyebrow waxing is the same guy who made the Lindsay Lohan/Jane Fonda stepdaughter-rape movie is the same guy who made the movie where Kate Hudson must choose between a career and raising her orphaned nieces and nephews is the same guy who made TWO anthology films starring Ashton Kutcher.

A poll of Garry Marshall cameos in films by other directors would be equally tough but for very different reasons.

c'mon, aside from "The Odd Couple" -- actually, including that -- his Lost in America role is the best thing he ever did.

this guy donates tons of money to northwestern's film/tv school and has a building named after him IIRC.

you have to give him credit for being very... consistent across his long career.

also don't forget that this dude is a major television producer-direction: happy days, laverne &shirley, mork & mindy, the odd couple...

I would like to voice my strong concern about this show's spiraling decline in ratings. David, ever since you took us to the Caribbean, it's been Jamaica homeless people sucking soup, and a big wave outside that cost a hundred thousand dollars. That's depressing and it's expensive, two words I hate. You know the words I like? I like the word "peppy" and the word "cheap". Peppy and cheap.

Last night I was watching some of the commentaries for The Simpsons season 11, and Marshall was on the commentary for the episode in which he voices a character. Near the end, someone asks him why he put Rosie O'Donnell in a sex movie. He replies, "It was supposed to be Sharon Stone, but the studio wanted something different, to make it a comedy! Don't rent that movie. Rent The Flamingo Kid, or Overboard or something."

You guys should read Martian Dawn, by Michael Friedman.

Marshall's memoir ended up in the laundry room of my apartment building. There's a good section about him doing Lost in America, getting pissed off about Albert Brooks wanting a dozen or more takes, and realizing afterwards that getting pissed off got him to give the exasperated performance that Brooks wanted.

i hope Hector Elizondo has other work lined up.
