charity shopping [in london]

i went out on a big clothes shopping binge on saturday (but didn't manage to buy very much grrr). anyway once conclusion that c + i reached was that i shd get a sheepskin jacket; unfortunately none of the ones i tried on were any good at all. anyway c claims that such a garment would be easily found in a charity shop, and that st john's wood is a good place to look. which set me thinking: where in london is best for charity shopping? particularly for books (i've always found golders green pretty decent here) and, err, sheepskin jackets.

Putney high street, Mornington Crescent to Camden = faves of mine!

For books, Kingston - ur, that street with the falling down phone boxes - has ALWAYS been lethal for me...

my great buddy Stevie C has a sheepskin coat, and yes, he got it from a charity shop. so keep your eyes opened.

charity shops are usually good for books. unless you know what you want. but for random good book finding action, charity shops rock. i'm reading my 75p Lord of the Flies right now. woo!

Westbourne Grove has some nice stuff, plus there used to be a good one on the big bend in the road that goes from Notting Hill gate to High street ken.

toby, you could also wait a week and sate your thrift needs at dollar-a-pound shop in cambridge mass or filene's downtown (er...assuming they both still exist)

The ones round Goodge Street I rather like but I may have cleaned them out of all the Sweet Valley books. There's also a womens clothing exchange there which has good stuff but it's not cheapo.

Hahaha I knew this was you! Felicity check yr. mail, there are detailed instructions re. central London charidee shopping.

Shepherd's Bush = GRATE! when they had the Humana shop but even without there are still dozens there.

There's one in the Brunswick Centre very near my flat and the FAP which is huge.

Quality of charity shop clothes is on a downward turn and sometimes I see tops from New Look for £6 in there which is bollocks because they're £8 in the shops.

Sarah! At your new workplace you're not far from the Sue Ryder by the Camden-bound bus stops just north of Euston Road which can be very good and the prices are not too bad. Also there are a few retro shops on Drummond Street worth browsing at least - one of them was where my cat hat came from.

There's also Oxfam Originals just off Carnaby Street. Women's Retro (part of the dreaded MVE empire, soul-sucking part-time employers of many ILx-ors) in Notting Hill isn't a charity shop, but does have a good range of cheap-ish vintage and second hand designer stuff.

MVE RetroWoman is also the fave place for stylists with drug habits to offload shoes and accessories that have 'gone missing' from photo shoots.
