i don't know much about chavez but i think the comparison {with ahmenidinejad} is apt - both spend a lot of time catering to the least educated / most reactionary parts of the population, who may or may not have a strong understanding of how gov'ts and economies work on a national or international level, and spend a lot of framing things in manichean terms (it's either nuclear weapons OR be slaves of israel!) and a lot of time "speaking truth to power"

No, {someone something to do with football} can't. He's really a bit embarrassing. Not that you'd know that from QPR fans on messageboards, who are viewing him as a speaker of truth to power. Which I think is how he wants to be viewed, rather than as a troll. The Taarabt thing is funny though.

the only thing I was trying to convey with my example was that I do not see anything inherently virtuous about using "an unrepentant asshole" to get lols.

I am all for speaking truth to power, but someone needs to go after a slightly-less-easy target than Chris Brown before I will applaud their moral courage.
