thirteen years pass...

People used to just dump loose garbage into metal garbage cans and put it out to be collected (i.e. emptied), didn't they. That seems so crazy now. I think that was the case in New York, but also in many other cities... suburbs, etc.

budo jeru, Tuesday, 7 October 2025 00:47 (two months ago)

well, we lived kind of rural.. but 'burn barrels' were pretty ubiquitous back in the day

For one, orange rinds and coffee grounds belong in the compost, even eggshells.

Can't answer this in England because every municipality has wildly different recycling rules. This can lead to some Kafka-esque complications when visiting other towns; even towns very close-by.

It's because in the early 2000s a rule got introduced saying that all councils had to provide at least two types of recycling. But it was never specified which kind, so every town council went their own way. Luckily, I believe, everything's going to get standardised at some point in the next couple of years, so every garbage bag (bin bag) will contain at least one common item.

Now read it backwards. (dog latin), Tuesday, 7 October 2025 10:04 (two months ago)

I grew up in a fairly urban setting and we had an incinerator in our basement, essentially a metal box with an eternal flame in it for cremating garbage. Seems kinda crazy now.

Hackney currently has a system that can't handle the compostable packaging you get with a lot of food, disposable cups and wrapping for magazines; we are advised to throw that in with general waste. So it's a regular ocurrence for me to bin a piece of fabric that has DO NOT PUT THIS IN GENERAL WASTE THIS IS COMPOSTABLE written in huge letters on it.

the clowns in my building think EVERYTHING is recyclable.. bubble wrap? sure! Mylar bags? hell yeah, toss em in... it doesn't help that they put the triangle on all kinds of shit that maybe, possibly could be recycled somewhere but 99.9% chance it's heading straight to the landfill

Andy the Grasshopper, Tuesday, 7 October 2025 17:29 (two months ago)

Sure, couch cushions are recyclable
