TOP 100 COMEDY FILMS OF ALL TIME NOMINATIONS AND DISCUSSION THREAD

Message Bookmarked
Bookmark Removed

Comedies is the new action films. We'll do this in three parts: nomination thread, voting thread & results thread. Once we compile our nominations ilxors will be invited to submit their ranked ballot via email.

I'll accept nominations for movies that are clearly comedies (including movies that were marketed as comedies but are in fact unfunny pieces of crap), or for funny or satirical movies that may not be traditionally considered comedies, accompanied with a good faith argument. I'm not going to accept nominations from lazy trolls. So put a little effort into it, trolls.

*ilx climbs out of tiny car to discuss films over seltzer & cream pies*

I thought we just said no animated shorts on account of my trying to nominate several Looney Runes things.

Monster House is great but when I think about why I love it so much little of it has to do with the humor in the film.

well, it's a poll for feature length movies, so short films are out whether animated or not

some dude, Monday, 5 March 2012 16:41 (thirteen years ago)

I'd like to see Monster House sometime, even though Dan Harmon seems to have more or less disowned it.

Ghost Oral (Deric W. Haircare), Monday, 5 March 2012 16:43 (thirteen years ago)

I am unfamiliar with any of his other work, but it's a great little horror comedy.

beachville, Monday, 5 March 2012 16:48 (thirteen years ago)

Oxford’s Tumblr is just as entertaining as her tweets, but a post from yesterday (March 28) showcased another writer’s talent. Oxford posted a note from screenwriter Dan Harmon (creator of NBC’s Community) to her daughter. The note was a response to Oxford, who wrote to Harmon saying the 2006 animated movie Monster House (which he wrote) was giving her daughter nightmares and asking for him to explain himself.

Harmon did respond and fully agreed with Oxford’s then seven-year-old daughter, Salinger, saying, “I never finished writing Monster House before my bosses turned it into a movie. And then different writers, people I don’t even know, changed the story in lots of ways, and the movie that you saw was not the story I wanted to tell you.” Who were those bosses? According to Harmon, a hack (Gil Kenan) and a moron (Steven Spielberg).

The note (which is pretty excellent all the way through) also expresses some kinder sentiments and and explains Harmon’s thoughts on how a scary movie should be done. Finally, he leaves Oxford’s daughter with this advice: “next time Monster House is on, just remember that the guy that wrote it told you it was dumb.”

I will be v sad with no fancy stills to admire during the reveal, yet I don't have the free time to offer to make them. :(

Johnny Fever, Monday, 5 March 2012 17:45 (thirteen years ago)

Jean Harlow -- the funny, long dead Melanie Griffith -- is probably best in Red Dust, which is not a pure comedy, so

Bombshell
Dinner at Eight

Literal Facepalms (Dr Morbius), Monday, 5 March 2012 17:49 (thirteen years ago)

(he did what!) (Austerity Ponies), Monday, 5 March 2012 18:45 (thirteen years ago)

3 weeks gives people time to watch movies and procrastinate right up to the last minute

Upon watching that clip, I must concede that Encino Man is perhaps worthy of reconsideration. Although probably not for reasons that anyone involved in the film may have intended.
