My father bought this hat (or as near to it as GIS allows) for his wedding in 1947. Later, I claimed it, since he rarely wore it afterward and it was in grebt shape. We both wore a 6-7/8.

I bought a tweed cap very like this when in Ireland in 2000. My wife likes it much more than I do.

Aimless, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 18:10 (thirteen years ago)

true: I have ordered fedoras on eBay before

flagp∞st (dayo), Wednesday, 29 February 2012 18:16 (thirteen years ago)

I had a Russian hat I wore all the time in my early twenties, now sadly lost. I currently own one big foofy brown beret that belonged to my gran, and another brown corduroy almost-beret that belonged to my aunt.

Aimless, I had a hat very similar to that, also inherited from my grandfather. I wore it to a weekend-long ska festival/scooter rally. At some point I passed out and someone stole it from my head.

flagp∞st (dayo), Wednesday, 29 February 2012 18:51 (thirteen years ago)

Have always wondered why the Pirates had that kinda tube-top hat instead of the usual round-head type. Always thought they were ugly. Intended to evoke a smokestack or something?

andrew m., Wednesday, 29 February 2012 19:08 (thirteen years ago)

Pirates baseball cap is retro to nineteenth century. Rounded top came in during twentieth century, iirc.

Aimless, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 19:11 (thirteen years ago)

Gotcha. Woulda been pretty funny if their batting helmets were also that shape.

Again, a GIS as near as I can get to the one I owned. US Army surplus, circa 1960 vintage, and the lining was shearling, not fur. Bought this for use in Minnesota, when I attended college there.

Aimless, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 19:21 (thirteen years ago)

Pirates cap made me think of this - I used to have the painter's cap version as a young skater-dude.

When I was in 5th grade I though it would be cool to be the girl who wore hats all the time, which lasted about 4 years. I was rocking a denim Blossom hat until 1997. To church & c, too. I also had a black corduroy beret w/a tartan band, an old man's bucket hat with a mesh top, a tweed Newsie cap, and some big ridic Joni Mitchell straw hat.
Now I knit a lot of hats; I'd like to think they're a little less unstylish, but I'm probably fooling myself.

I wore this when I was 14 and thought it made me look "alternative" and interesting. I could not have been more wrong.

flagp∞st (dayo), Wednesday, 29 February 2012 23:51 (thirteen years ago)

i wore the old mans bucket hat for a summer. i was, um, 22 at the time. no mesh, just plastic grommet air holes in the top. earned the nickname "gilligan" that year

buzza, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 23:55 (thirteen years ago)

I was rocking a denim Blossom hat

This is probably the only hat I've ever owned. I look ridiculous in hats. Most people do, tbh. Outdoor hats for warmth are obv fine but hats as indoor accessories are more often than not NAGL imo.

wolf kabob (ENBB), Wednesday, 29 February 2012 23:57 (thirteen years ago)

The denim Blossom hat had a rose pinned to it that was also made of denim, in front of a lace and plastic pearl applique.

cashmere tears-soaker (Abbbottt), Wednesday, 29 February 2012 23:58 (thirteen years ago)

many years ago a security guard at my bookstore wrote up an incident report in which she described a shoplifting suspect as wearing a poopy hat. i suppose there's a nonzero chance she meant a hat covered in poop, but in any case i never discovered what she meant.

mookieproof, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 23:58 (thirteen years ago)

x-post NICE

I am sure I had more than one but the one I remember most vividly definitely had a sunflower on it which I think is what the Byalik OG hat also had.

wolf kabob (ENBB), Wednesday, 29 February 2012 23:59 (thirteen years ago)

nicole, i wore the same hat for the same reason. i was inspired by patrick mcnee in the (OG) avengers, who i thought was some classy shit

a serious minestrone rockist (remy bean), Thursday, 1 March 2012 00:22 (thirteen years ago)

Never been a hat guy. I'm not comfortable in one really and I don't think I get away with it like some dudes do.

I had a US Post Office baseball cap that was my favorite for years and years, but I'm kinda of the belief that baseball caps should only be worn by baseball players. (It's not a hard-and-fast rule. I may be just like that because my favorite teams are all red colored, and it's not a good look for me.)

Tried one of these for awhile

http://rallyfestpromotionsltd.shopping.officelive.com/images/Headwear/FNBB243%20-%20Suprafleece%20Ski%20Hat.png

but what was even the point.

Lately, I wear one of these when it's wet and below freezing:

http://www.thebestvintageclothing.com/media/62/a20791e1302cb6cacdfd2c_m.jpg

(actual pic of me and everything.) Only thing to that is that it's really only been wet and below freezing once this winter.

I wish, wish I could wear a fedora, but I'm honest enough with myself to know that if I tried to wear one, I'd be one bandanna-around-my-thigh away from haunting an arcade somewhere and getting arrested for having pills.

pplains, Thursday, 1 March 2012 00:48 (thirteen years ago)

Not really a person of hat inclination, though I approve its manifestation in others. I have a cheap H&M wooly hat I wear when cycling, but GIS isn't throwing me anything I can use to show it.

seandalai, Thursday, 1 March 2012 00:56 (thirteen years ago)

PP your cold weather hat is the best sort of man hat imo.

wolf kabob (ENBB), Thursday, 1 March 2012 00:58 (thirteen years ago)

I love hats! And I have misplaced my lovely bright red beret which is very annoying, because a year ir 2 ago I also lost my long-beloved black velvet beret in a car accident/ .Grrr.

Lindsay NAGL (Trayce), Thursday, 1 March 2012 01:19 (thirteen years ago)

what's up with dudes who wear baseball caps 24/7, always with a very narrow curve to the brim

flagp∞st (dayo), Thursday, 1 March 2012 01:21 (thirteen years ago)

actually I know, it's cause they are balding, and baseball caps are the only kind of hats you can wear in public while making as few significations as possible

not a hat person. got a stunning leather harley davidson visor for camp one summer, but bad kids stole it. no pix on the net, but kinda like this, embossed w giant harley logo & lettering, so rad:

there was a stretch, as a nasty adolescent, when i wore baseball caps too much. but at least they were worn forward and stemmed from actually playing baseball.

these days i have a few baseball caps that i might wear if i'm going to the bodega before showering, plus various hockey toques for coldness

mookieproof, Thursday, 1 March 2012 02:07 (thirteen years ago)

mookieproof, Thursday, 1 March 2012 02:07 (thirteen years ago)

I am not as stylish as Suzy. I did also wear a Detroit Tigers hat for most of third and fourth grade, but that hat is not embarrassing.

Nicole, Thursday, 1 March 2012 02:10 (thirteen years ago)

Is it bad form to post pictures of yourself in your hats in this thread? I do have pictorial evidence of most of my hats but don't want to break the form of 'generic pictures of the type of hat you have worn'.

I lost it at a party, leaving in a drunken haze. And yes, my head did get hot. But I pretty much always over-clothe myself, anyway. I wear jumpers and jackets in pretty much any weather. I just prefer people to see as little of me as possible.

emil.y, Thursday, 1 March 2012 02:36 (thirteen years ago)

I don't really consider toques (knitted caps, beanies, whatever poor substitute words u may have for toques) to be hats, more like winter clothing necessities! This year, I mostly wear my dusty-red one every day when outside.

I'm trying to remember my other hats that were not toques but it seems I've blocked them from my memory. I think I tried to wear hats on occasion but felt (and looked) like a dork so never followed through. I wore a black beret outside in winter during highschool but that was cute iirc, paired w wool army coat lol early-90s highschool.

Oh I have a straw cowboy hat for beach/cottage going/farming, of course!

I would be okay with a nice cloche. But still wld ultimately feel dorky if not fitzgeralding it up somewhere where everyone wears hats.

This is easily -- by a wide margin -- my most ridiculous hat
I added the feathers and jewel, but the rest is original. I got it out of a crap pile (like one of those boxes where they throw stuff that no one wants) at a thrift store in Ohio. I have since thrown it away, RIP crazy hat that took up too much room in my closet.

Ahahaa, that hat is AWESOME! I also like Trayce's fuzzy hat, and the cute ears on tokyo rosemary's (I think there was another thread where I admitted I quite liked those animal head hats that are all the rage now, but that is a more demure/less incredibly silly version of such).
