King James' Version = one of best books in English language.
Of various modern translations I prefer the NIV.

Thomas Jefferson's miracle-less Bible. Does this really exist or is it a myth?

KJV definitely. It's the most beautiful English translation I have come across, though I haven't tried to make a thorough survey.

The Jefferson Bible is not a myth. My father used to have a copy in his study.

five years pass...

Bump. Is there any consensus as to BEST translation?

I have always liked the New Jerusalem Bible. It combines transparency (=footnotes that talk about sources even when the source is clearly, say, an earlier regional religion - this is really helpful in the pentateuch especially) with a good ear for the poetry of it. 2nd best is the Oxford Study Bible for me.

No matter which you read, it's gonna be contentious, confirm/deny?

roxymuzak, Wednesday, 9 January 2008 17:18 (eighteen years ago)

I guess most people aren't willing to raise hell re: the Oxford.

roxymuzak, Wednesday, 9 January 2008 17:20 (eighteen years ago)

oxford was standard for all the religious studies classes i took in college.

^ On Robert Alter's weird quasi-scholarly version, as well as a new translation of the Quran.

xyzzzz__, Wednesday, 30 January 2019 23:47 (seven years ago)

Friend of mine bought me the Alter for my birthday and is bringing it over tonight. First bible best bible

I don’t own a KJV, though, what’s a good non-devotional edition of it
