It's early. I'm not reading very well. But all I'm taking from this is that they gave somebody 30 MONTHS for pretending to be a boy. Am I missing something or is this fucked up beyond belief?

Nultified Ancients of Man U (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 8 March 2012 09:09 (thirteen years ago)

"Pretending" = more than just dressing up and 'snogging'...

That's probably why.

Mark G, Thursday, 8 March 2012 09:11 (thirteen years ago)

'Nobody knows what it is like when the person you love and want to spend the rest of your life with is not real. Gemma ruined my childhood and no little girl should have to go through what I did,' added Jessica in a separate interview with The Sun.

i don't want to downplay the confusion and hurt you might be feeling but ffs fueling a lynch mob is nagl

Nultified Ancients of Man U (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 8 March 2012 09:11 (thirteen years ago)

the article is unclear on the details but it appears that the sexual assault angle is because the girls were underage? how many 19-20 year-old men wd've got a 2 and a half year sentence in the same circs?

Nultified Ancients of Man U (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 8 March 2012 09:13 (thirteen years ago)

and what the fuck is the "fraud" conviction?

i'm sure this is just bad reporting but the sentence as reported is unbelievable

Nultified Ancients of Man U (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 8 March 2012 09:14 (thirteen years ago)

OK, I have to spell it out:

Adolescent fumblings with your boyf who looks like Justin Bieber, only to find out it was another girl really...

That's why the media are running with this, and are searching frantically (prob) for a photo of the girl as a boy.

I agree there is a case here for more careful handling of the victims and the perpetrator. But that's not the media's style is it?

um, most of them?

Mark G, Thursday, 8 March 2012 09:17 (thirteen years ago)

the adolescent fumblings thing is pretty clear. i'm sure the victims are distressed. the rest looks a lot like moral panic and queerphobia

The article clearly states she got 3 months for fraud and 30 months for sexual assault. Since what sort "sexual assault" she committed isn't clearly stated (the article said there was another victim, but the specifics her case are undisclosed), it's hard to tell whether her (assumed) queerness affected the judgement.

However, I don't think the fraud part gets judged because of "queerphobia". If a boy would have pretended to be someone he he's not in order to dater several girls, apparently at the same time, and at least one of them twice under two different false identities, I'd say that would be considered pretty comdemnable even if the affairs were "straight".

Tuomas, Thursday, 8 March 2012 11:09 (thirteen years ago)

Condemnable, but not actually illegal. Unless the girls were underage. Which they were.

Mark G, Thursday, 8 March 2012 11:11 (thirteen years ago)

I have a really hard time believing the girls didn't realize that he was actually a girl.

wolf kabob (ENBB), Thursday, 8 March 2012 11:17 (thirteen years ago)

didnt this happen in america recently too, but with a way older justin bieber clone?

beachville, Thursday, 8 March 2012 11:19 (thirteen years ago)

Well, imagine a young, prevoicebroken Justin Bieber (I'm using this as a 'type', mainly because the boygirl looks like him facially), and how 'attractive' and 'so much in common' this person would be to a young girl.

Mark G, Thursday, 8 March 2012 11:19 (thirteen years ago)

Or that she was the *same* two boys that that one girl dated.

Ailsa - yeah, otm.

I mean . . .

I only ever saw below his eyes. He covered the rest with a hood,' Jessica said. ‘He said he didn’t want to show his face because he was very shy. And why wouldn’t I believe that?

Because it's completely sketchy, that's why. I just think there had to be a whole lot of willful ignorance going on with the duped girls because I'm sure there were tons of red flags they overlooked.

wolf kabob (ENBB), Thursday, 8 March 2012 11:22 (thirteen years ago)

I'd say there definitely has to be a huge element of self-deception in cases like this yeah

Number None, Thursday, 8 March 2012 11:28 (thirteen years ago)

enbb otm this case seems really suspect. lots of details we don't know though.

She then decided to lift Luke’s hat as he slept to take a better look at the face she had never properly seen.

sleeping with someone you've never properly seen the face of is quote o_O

Rosie 47 (ken c), Thursday, 8 March 2012 12:00 (thirteen years ago)

wonder what kind of hat it was?

During days out and sleepovers Gemma learned Jessica and her other victim's tastes in boys.

= football players?

Aaron Lampard
Luke Jones

= Frank Lennon
= Phil Young
?

Rosie 47 (ken c), Thursday, 8 March 2012 12:04 (thirteen years ago)

Can't they just jail Frank Lampard and call it quits?

Feebs K-Tel (NickB), Thursday, 8 March 2012 12:09 (thirteen years ago)

Luke Jones = Vinnie Chadwick

Feebs K-Tel (NickB), Thursday, 8 March 2012 12:10 (thirteen years ago)

hiding the face is definitely a good idea in that case.

Rosie 47 (ken c), Thursday, 8 March 2012 12:15 (thirteen years ago)

"he always hid is face because he told me he's really ugly and would put me off if i'd seen him"

"my friends told me that he's really fit though"

Rosie 47 (ken c), Thursday, 8 March 2012 12:15 (thirteen years ago)

so what is the fraud charge? or is this one of the left out details, i suspect?

it couldn't possibly be pretending to be the opposite sex?

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Thursday, 8 March 2012 12:26 (thirteen years ago)

I mean this story sets off red flags in my head too (I'm with NV and ENBB). obviously at 15, and not being ready for sexual contact, she wouldn't have discovered the truth being the one "test" that could have proven it to her.

But this person is decidedly feminine looking (even if not overwhelmingly so), and why would you make out with someone who was hiding their face?

i mean that reminds me of dreams/nightmares I used to have of kissing a masked person who in the end turned out to be a character from Sesame Street...

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Thursday, 8 March 2012 12:28 (thirteen years ago)

also the story about the police finding out 'the truth' via strip search is very

I assume the fraud is related to her pretending to be a boy of similar age in order to have some kind of a sexual contact with a girl under the age of consent, when in reality she was 18?

I agree the one victim's tale sounds dodgy, but without knowing the details of the other victim it's hard to tell whether this case was blown out of proportion. The only thing mentioned in the article that would imply sexual assault is "groping", and I don't think that alone would land anyone 30 months of prison even in a case like this. So something else must've happened.

Tuomas, Thursday, 8 March 2012 13:14 (thirteen years ago)

according to article groping was by frank lennon
then vinnie chadwick was someone she "spent the night" with whatever that means. 30 months of prison still sounds harsh though for an all night pro evo tournament

Rosie 47 (ken c), Thursday, 8 March 2012 13:22 (thirteen years ago)

this is veering close to that "dude lied about being Jewish to have sex" story which turned out to be something completely different in the end, so I'll cease passing any judgement at this point until I hear more.

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Thursday, 8 March 2012 13:28 (thirteen years ago)

too bad we couldn't have just given her an ASBO!

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Thursday, 8 March 2012 13:28 (thirteen years ago)

assume the fraud is related to her pretending to be a boy of similar age in order to have some kind of a sexual contact with a girl under the age of consent, when in reality she was 18?

no, the fraud is that she broke her own jaw, accused one of her alter egos of doing it, and filed for compensation. it seems to have been intended to convince police that her personas were real, and to stop the investigation.

also, she was 17 when the offences took place, and the victims were 16, so age of consent isn't an issue. (she was involved with one of them when she was 15, but she wasn't charged with any offences from that time. the reports tend to emphasise her age now and the victims age at the time.)

it's also odd that the case was concluded in january and went unreported until now. maybe it's because they needed jessica to waive her right to anonymity and they needed to wait until she reached the age of 18. still, good to see the papers taking a stand against lying and manipulating impressionable young girls into doing things that aren't in their interest.

Tuomas, Thursday, 8 March 2012 13:34 (thirteen years ago)

i like the daily mail for that. also the more positive news stories they also run to congratulate bright young girls who have done very well on their GCSE and A-Levels to encourage more girls to do so.

And also to make themselves presentable when they go to the school to get their grades.

it was reported in jan - i remember it from then. the reports now are because she's been sentenced (which was the cue for the other girl to sell her story, it seems)

lex pretend, Thursday, 8 March 2012 13:45 (thirteen years ago)

4 step approach
1/ first you get yourself pregnant
2/ when your child starts to grow hair, keep it under 2cm
3/ go to an estate pub
4/ look yourself in a mirror and glass yourself for being a nonce

Mainly because it's in an article you interpret it as sketchy behavior and you know that there was deception going on.. I am not sure if I would consider it strange if I were a teenage girl. Then again I can be pretty fucking naive.

I think there are teenagers who would get the red flag and teenagers who wouldn't. I'm not terribly surprised about things like this happening at all.

so either something heinous happened that's not really been reported but justifies a 30 month sentence for somebody who may have an autism spectrum condition, or this sentence is still unbelievably fucked up because the perp transgressed societal expectations more than irl laws.

Nultified Ancients of Man U (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 8 March 2012 15:22 (thirteen years ago)

I think it's more likely to be the former, there are evidently victims who haven't decided to go public, but yeah given this girl is possibly on the spectrum not to mention possibly mentally ill then the press basically putting her in the stock is pretty fucking shitty behaviour for someone who's still basically a confused teen, albeit one who acted in a shitty way herself.
