it is probably because there is something wrong with me, but i loathe these places. the local olive garden, where certain family members like to dine occasionally, is in the parking lot of this giant fucking strip mall that also houses a bunch of other competing chain restaurants: shari's (famous for pie), red lobster, applebees, some weird fake "barbecue shack", a mongolian grill, etc. we don't rate a cheesecake factory, i guess.

anyway, these awful, suprisingly expensive flavor troughs are fucking constantly MOBBED with with with with people, with awful, grinning, doggie-bag-toting, human-type people. they make you take a little plastic beeper and stand around with the moon-eyed, slack-jawed yard stock for an hour or so before being allowed the pleasure of sitting and eating in the food hangar area. dngi. dnwtgi.

sarah otm, i think that's true. maybe people still like to pretend that the U.S. is a "classless" society, but this is just BS.

i've maybe talked about this before, but there was recently a three-day "hempfest" drug celebration in a public park near my neighborhood. drew tens of thousands of weed enthusiasts. and for days a rode/walked around in a state of horrifed revulsion at the weedian dregs. i fucking loathed them and their dreadlocks and their tye dye and their ICP pants and their hoodies. they seemed to me like the worst people imaginable, and i couldn't imagine why any supposedly legit political rally (hempfest posits itself as political activism) could hope to succeed by associating itself with such.

but i'm middle class, from an upper class background. and my resolutely working class girlfriend was much less horrified. (she gets horrifed by hipsters in williamsburg, but that's another story.) which made me wonder if my revulsion wasn't a legit reaction to stupid burnouts, but rather simple revulsion at the culture of a different class. so yeah, class in america.

i deny nothing and will die a snob. my rants at pomplamoose and then-hipster (now yuppie) art/design featuring birds & deer are similarly elitist, but from another angle.

Srarting non-laudatory threads about a particular ilxor is low.

Aimless, Sunday, 11 March 2012 18:58 (thirteen years ago)

this is the most wounded of cultural pessimisms, borne of some prior conviction that the world might not necessarily be terrible

aimless you are being prudish

Just calling you out, nakh. It's low.

Aimless, Sunday, 11 March 2012 19:08 (thirteen years ago)

this isnt actively 'laudatory' but it does contend that a worldview is worthy of closer attention, and i think i am on record that contenderizer is easily one of the more interesting ilx posters

It has been my experience on the interweb, that any time a particular forum participant appears in a thread title as an exemplar of anything whatsoever, if it is couched in terms other than affection and admiration, then it becomes an open invitation to dissect that person online, and once their thoracic cavity is opened up, it just gets uglier as time passes. Even if the intent was neutral, the outcome is almost certain to be regretable.

This observation has held true for over 15 years of my online existance, in a wide variety of forums. The exceptions to this rule are not worth mentioning.

Aimless, Sunday, 11 March 2012 19:39 (thirteen years ago)

those posts arent merely more misanthropic than the ilx norm, they are really very dispirited in a way yr average ilxor seldom is, and more humble since they question whether the disfavouring imperative isnt itself at fault

i mean contenderizer (it resists abbreviation) u are one of the few ppl here to show general disfavour for bh ideas, and i wonder if it alienates u because in the absence of any didactic utility, bhi is really just abt laughing at 'them', and such levity is improper

if one is to upbraid, or censure, or otherwise act in such a way as to render others as lessers, then it must be done ruefully and entirely without pleasure

this difference seems clear when u discuss the slovenly and often inadvertent prejudicial utterances which ilx enjoys to subject to its disfavour

Hey, here's where Flag Post really comes into its own. Because I have nothing against nakhchivan as a poster or as a human being, but I think that a thread like this has gone way over the line from meta to personal, I find this kind of behaviour unacceptable and I completely dislike the effect that threads like this have on ILX.

this is the most deathly serious thread ive done recently

The term “hipster racism” from Carmen Van Kerckhove at Racialicious (nakhchivan), Sunday, 11 March 2012 20:37 (thirteen years ago)

I'm on record as being probably nakhchivan's #1 fan on ilx & that'll remain true but I loathe this sort of thread on every forum it appears on, which is all forums eventually. really though I date an ilx drop in quality from which it'll never really recover to when one generation of posters started bringing lots of self/each-other analysis to the whole deal. because it's seldom "analysis" - it's usually sniping, even when it's good-natured, and in either case, it's cliquish high school shit imo. decent threads about interesting subjects become unreadable inter-office fwd'd email jokes. only worse because they just go on and on and bleed from thread to thread. So, nakh, I bow before your superior knowledge of classical music, legitimately, and your capacity for reasoning seems much better than mine generally, but fuck this thread. contenderizer's not even in the top 3 most classist posters on the board tbr.

unlistenable in philly (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Sunday, 11 March 2012 20:38 (thirteen years ago)

Nakh, go try again in another thread, using other means to make your point, assuming your point wasn't some thang between you and c that you wanted to drag down the street behind your horse.

Aimless, Sunday, 11 March 2012 20:39 (thirteen years ago)

Deathly seriousness doesn't give the thread any more value. Why not take it up with him off-board?
